The other thread was getting a little long...

From the original post from mmciastro:
Oh my, it's been boring around here lately from a breakdown (vs take down) perspective. I say let's get all worked up over this from the Status page:

sah_assimilator1 kryten Running
sah_assimilator2 kryten Running
sah_assimilator3 kryten Running
sah_assimilator4 kryten Not Running

My gosh, what shall we do??? I have some results about to run past the deadline in 12 days. Hope they fix this soon.

And my contribution to the new thread:
sah_assimilator1 kryten Not Running
sah_assimilator2 kryten Running
sah_assimilator3 kryten Running
sah_assimilator4 kryten Running

YIPES!!!! PANIC!!!!!

So, are you going to commandeer [read steal] everyones personal threads they keep for the public to use just because they are over 200 posts in length?

You need to learn about net etiquette [netiquette]:

On these fora, people have been creating and maintaining [spawning new] threads for the general public to use. I maintain one for people to post their personal BOINC milestones.

You do not:

  • create a thread that others have created unless the original author relinguishes control.
  • hijack a thread for your own purposes unless the author does not follow netiquette.
  • spam a thread for the purpose of disrupting the general topic of the thread.

There are more than likely other netiquette rules to follow, others here may add to them if the wish.

The original "Panic Mode On" thread was created by a friend of mine, Tony, and I wouldn't think of commandeering his thread. Have a good day.... (-:<

At first I was taken back by the fact he hijacked my thread, but then I realized, I didn't care. It didn't matter to me and I feel no "ownership" of a thread title. I calmed down then and see no reason to Panic over this. LOL

Well Eeexxxxcuuuuuuusssse ME! (Read: who put a burr up your butt???).

I had no intention of Hijacking/stealing/commandeering/misappropriating etc., etc., etc. ANYONE's PERSONAL thread. I thought I was doing the dial-up users a favor by making a clean start on a light-hearted 'fun' thread. My posts are public record and if you bother to scan thru them, you'd see that I normally go out of my way NOT to offend or intimidate the posters I reply to, but rather to supply useful and/or humorous information.

Tony, if I've offended you or you feel I've stepped out of line, please post and I will issue a public apology and, if you wish, change the message title. Please note, I quoted and gave credit for your original posting.

You need to learn about net etiquette [netiquette]:

I've seen yours, and even posted in some. Good job!

For MY edification (and for others as well), please post link to where the above is defined. I've been posting for YEARs in various fora, including this one, and have yet to see netiquette rules defined to EVERYONE's satisfaction. So enlighten me as to where this is defined other than your own opinion (which you are certainly entitled to hold).

I happen to agree with your second and third points, and don't believe I have overstepped those bounds. As for your first, It seems rather fuzzy and ill-defined, but I think I've covered it with the note to Tony above.

Same to you as well, but with a positive spin.

Hey Tony,
Well it happened to me a while back with my Milestone thread and when I see it happen to others I try to jump in and speak my mind. I respect what you stated above, but despite that, it still gives no one the right to commandeer anothers threads. If it's ok with you, then I'll drop it.... (-:<

I find that this thread is very placatory and I can panic and no one notices!

So far the servers are running fine, and allis as it should be. This makes me uneasy, as there is bound to ba something waiting just to cripple the system.

Im feel a slight panic coming on, but I can control it!

I can!

I know I can?
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

PANIC!!!!!!!!

Someone would recognize the WU dates for sure if they did that. Some of the big "farm" users used SetiQue's WU logging files, to sort down the WU's they processes and flag duplicates. And to weed out "bad" WU's that might hang their systems. I bet some of them are still checking BOINC WU's against those old lists.

Of course, Berkeley could use the old tapes again and just enter a different date for them. Anyway, it would not be that much effort to write a simple program to create random data (within normal data limits) and send those out for us to crunch. About the same odds of finding something "interesting".

many posts by matt have said they won't do this, sending useless data is well, useless
if they have no genuine work then they'll run dry and we'll have to compute for other projects (that's the whole idea of BOINC)

and besides, you should be attached to more than one project anyway, so that when/if SETI does run out, your CPU will keep doing something useful

for something else to panic about, may i bring the attention of viewers to a thread at BOINCstats about how bad the FlOps estimate is, apparently it could be out by a factor of 9
ooh-err :S we might not be faster than IBM's Blue Gene after all :(

Check your filter list. I've have accounts on there that I never added... some that have never posted, one doesn't even have an account number - its blank. Also looking at some acct info pages they are showing in strange fonts or encoding. Get ready for another database corruption outage.

I remember the "Bob" OS... Sorta like OS'es for dummies... It died, hmm I wonder why... So we have no BOINC for Dummies... I stopped by Barnes and Noble and did not see any Yellow books... BOINC for Dummies...

Hmmm PANIC Mode On!

BOINC for dummies would not have a wide enough audience. Besides it is a moving target. If the book came out today, it would be covering 2.x.
