Google earth is a great program! You can literally zoom in to a resolution where you can see your own house from satellite (unless your in suburbia it seems they havent high res mapped everything yet). What really blew me away is how it can instantly home in on a specific street address or business you input. The measure utility comes in handy when you want to figure out how far it is to walk to work down to the .1 of a mile or km. The 3d city maps are so real it scared me. This certainly isnt a good thing for national security. Criminals and terrorists could use this data to pull robberies, attack buildings, the possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately the only bit of the UK in good hi-res seems to be London, where i live you can't even make out the town never mind the house.

Yahoo! is getting into the satellite mapping game, too. Two days ago they released their beta. It's not as good as Google Earth yet, but it's early days yet. One advantage of the format is that there's no software to download, it all works straight from your browser. You have to be registered with Yahoo! though.

To see the satellite shots, be sure to click on either the "Hybrid" or the "Satellite" buttons in the upper-left corner of the map itself.

The link for the beta is:

Don't forget this placemark file for Google Earth created by bjango showing locations of some prominant BOINC users, teams, and project sites. It's way cool.

They really shouldn't park the SR-71's out in the open at Edwards ..... And what's that circular hanger doing there?

LOL .... There are SR71's (two of them) to the left above the hangars. Probably NASA research planes though. They are still flying!

Also, most of the google earth images are may years old. I forget when they supposedly grounded the Blackbirds.

I can't quite make out the year that that photo was taken. It's either 2,000 or 2,006. Would be interesting if it was 2,006. I imagine they would still keep the SR-71's around for....well, something.

I've found it interesting how they were decommissioned yet the 50 year old U2's are still flying. Makes me wonder if it was because the Blackbirds were replaced with something much more advanced noone knows about yet. After all, even the Blackbirds were old.
