Personal background
Hi, everyone. I live in Michigan, in the suburbs north of Detroit, not far from the Palace of Auburn Hills, home of the Mighty Pistons! Honest, it's a great place to live...6 months out of the year. I'm getting up there in age (54), but people who know me can't believe anyone this old could be so immature- but, hey, I work at it. My name happens to be my on-line gaming name, and I primarily play FPS's, but driving sims are also fun. I have a keen interest in computers and started building them a few years ago, to support my gaming addiction. It's almost a symbiotic activity. My gaming 'puters are crunching numbers for SETI@home. I remember as a kid not wanting to grow up, so naturally I leaned toward a creative field and ended up being a car designer. I work for DaimlerChrysler, and have for almost 30 years. I'm married with two kids currently going to the University of Michigan (my daughter is in engineering studying climatology, and my son is in pre-med). Where did I go wrong? They could care less about car design! I also play tennis and basketball, but age and injuries have limited my activities of late. I hope to post in the science forums to spark an exchange of ideas on various topics related to the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere. See you out there!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI because I want to use my computers for something other than playing games and surfing the net. I have an interest in the idea of ETs, and I'm 100% sure we are not alone in the universe (or the galaxy, for that matter). Personally, I do not believe we are ready for space travel in terms of technology and our status as a species. We are much too close to the animal kingdom! As far as the SETI project, I do not believe there are advanced civilizations out there using radio waves or laser beams as a beacon for others to discover. Perhaps low energy signals like we emit with our TV and radio broadcasts exist, but I doubt the powerful variety designed to draw attention are out there. I believe technology that overcomes the time and space barrier is possible, and perhaps mankind will uncover it eventually. Until that day comes, SETI it is!
