Greetings,

I got my Windows 10 Upgrade reservation icon. Did you? ;) Win10 should be released to the wild on July 29, 2015. WooHoo, I think. ;)

Here's a link to a reservation explanation.

From what I have been able to determine, going from Win7/Win8.1 will not act as a fresh install. Supposedly, all installed apps should remain installed. I'm sure glad I'm not still running WinXP. That and Vista will be a fresh install. And I'm sure Win10 is not a free upgrade for them either. ;)

Here's a link to a Win10 Upgrade Guide.

When I upgraded from WinXP to Win7, it took a bit to get used to the differences, but I liked Win7 right from the start. I'm hoping for the same experience with the upgrade from Win7 to Win10. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

When (& if) I go to Win10 it'll be a clean install with a DVD (to many things can go wrong with an upgrade). ;-)

Cheers.

I've got a machine which was delivered with Windows XP pre-installed, and which has been upgraded in situ twice, first to Vista and then again to Windows 7. It will be interesting to see how it takes to Windows 10 (but it won't be the first one I try it on).

I wouldn't recommend that upgrade route for general users, but it worked for me. I bought the machine as 'Vista certified' hardware, but before the official release of Vista to the public. So, it was going to be my "teach yourself Vista" tool: unfortunately, it took a while for the OEM to complete the migration tool, so I ended up being behind the release curve instead of being in from of it. C'est la vie.

From my limited experience with Win10TP so far, I would add the recommendation that anyone considering upgrading once release comes around, of an old/existing host that is still using mechanical drives as the main system drive, take the opportunity to use a good SSD for the WIN10 OS/Boot drive. That's just based on the lack of installation/upgrade pain, and awesome boot times I'm seeing.

Greetings Wiggo,

Yeah, I understand the concept of doing a clean install. What's to say that the upgrade won't leave behind a bunch of unwanted old crap no longer used by Windows. I plan on doing a hardware upgrade of this PC over the next couple months, (gotta order the parts piece by piece), so I'm sure a clean install will ensue at that point. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Prometheus, (my Pentium E5200 machine on Win 7 Pro), now has a white Windows icon to the left of the Action Center Flag. When I hover over the Win icon, it prompts me to "Get Windows 10".

Voyager, (my Win 7 laptop), has been off for awhile. I will need to run Windows Update on it before I check for the "Get Windows 10" icon there.

Do I dare click on this "Get Windows 10" icon now, or wait awhile???

From what one of my colleagues tells me, on his Win 8.1 PC, it brings you to a Reserve your free copy...' page. He did not follow the link.

Here is what it will cost if you just buy a copy.

For registered copies of Windows 7 and 8.1, the upgrade will be free for one year from the release date.

It has been suggested that the RTM release, MSDN users, will be mid July.

Those two are OEM, I'd of hoped for Retail, in any case I looked at Amazon and found a few books, Windows 10 for Dummies, and Windows 8.1, but no Win 10 OS, yet...

As has been said it allows you to "reserve a copy" I did and what it suggests is that on the 29th July when the machine is on it will download the 3GB of WIN 10 and then let you know when it is ready to install.

My problem is I have 4 machines running WIN 7 but only 2 have the "Upgrade to WIN 10" icon, I hope this does not mean there will be a problem with the other two!!

All the PC's at the 60+ club have the icon except the one that has been reporting an illegal copy of windows

Hi,

Got the same bleeding icon, right clicked on it and got a few options, selected
check upgrade status, after a small pause was informed my rig had a copy reserved or similar.

The icon is however not welcome continually sitting there:-/ But I cant seem to get rid of the darned thing.

From what I saw I 'think' it runs a routine to generate a report on the machine its running on, then checks with M$ to verify its on a genuine Win7 system and I assume makes an entry in a log or whatever at M$. Possibly that reserves a copy of Win 10 for the reported rig..

Regards,
Cliff,

The suggestions I've seen to remove the icon - if you're not planning on doing the reservation - is to either hide the notification or uninstall KB3035583. I did the latter on the one Windows 7 laptop which had the reservation icon - at this point I only want to try Windows 10 on my sole Windows 8.1 laptop. Depending on how that works out I may or may not move to Windows 10 on the others, free or not.

Yep, I can restart my computer in about 30 seconds or so with my 90 GB SSD.

All my apps and data are stored on the 3 TB internal drive.

I'm going to assume that computers on a domain and unregistered copies of windows don't get the notification, so it looks I don't have to worry about the notification for now. My brother got the notification and he was asking me for advice, but the prospect of the Start Menu returning was all that he needed to sign his life away.
