And they were so proud of their special effects too - to they point where they wasted half of the movie showing them off, tours outside the Enterprise, tours inside the Enterprise , 5 minutes looking here , 5 minutes looking there. Corny. (note the capital C)

I absolutely LOVED Silent Running, and just had to buy it recently. I think it has stood the test of time quite well.

Yes, the 1982 John Carpenter 'The Thing'(the one with Kurt Russell)is a trerific
sci/fi movie. But I had to mention the 1951 Howard Hawkes original version because it left quite an impression on me.
We went to see it when it was new in the theater, when we were told Not to go to that movie but to the one across the street because mother knew 'The Thing'was a scarey movie. Sooo, we all went to see it. I sat down, started watching, the warm blanket was placed on the block of ice, then as I remembered the scene, something under the blanket started to move. The next thing to move was me! Out of the theater!

It was about 25 years until I saw the entire movie. It was not all that scarey after all.

Now, I think

Scarey was...'Night of The Living Dead',...eh?

Funny was...the original 'Little Shop of Horrors',...eh?

I'll vote that one second best - but I put another mini-series in above it.

TAKEN - it has absolutely everything I could ever want to keep me glued to the screen for hours, and hours, and hours.

You don't have to watch a guy spin in space for 30 minutes to get the message.

I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned these two...

THX 1138

Andromeda Strain (Doug Trumbull worked on this film also)

I've never seen THX 1138 - I should. Never heard of Andromeda Strain. And as for 2001, it's not 30 minutes of one guy spinning in space - The 3rd act is done in, what, 20 min? Like I said in 43325, just ignore it - Kubrik was f'ing with your mind.

FYI,
Drone 2 was named Huey; Drone 1 was named Dewey; Drone 3 was whipped off
into space before he was named.
The four main characters, Barker, Keenan, Lowell, and Wolf wore the
maritime signal flags coinciding with the first letter of their names
on their right breast in lieu of name tags.
There's probably more stuff that I just haven't noticed yet.

Glenn.

Anyone see a cheap flick called Def-Con 4? A third rate movie at least filmed in part here in Halifax, NS.

As far as the classic Sci-Fi movies are concerned, I think FORBIDDEN PLANET is tops. It was one of the first major Sci-FI movies that was given a workable budget, decent actors/actoress, was shot in color, and the special effects were way ahead of its' time (1956). It introduced Robbie the Robot. It also had a timely moral to its' story.

I had forgotton about Soylent Green, that is an absolute classic.

Not sure if the Manchurian Candidate qualifies as SCI-FI, but everyone must make a point of seeing the original before the remake comes out - a film years ahead of its time.

Theirs nothing more annoying than remakes.Hollywood always manages to muck up a classic by loosing the story over emphisizing specical effects.

Exactly.I think films now have overdone special efects.I think films from 70's to late 80's have best effects.Good storylines too.

We can't forget Fritz Langs Metropolis. For a 1927 silent film it still kicks butt.
Unfortunately you can only see the colourized version now.The original is lost.:(
