I would like to remind everyone of an email we all got dated December 27, 2019. I would like to hear the comments from administration. Here are some excerpts from said email. Mind you, this is less than 3 months ago. From Jeff Cobb... "Our program of searching for intelligent extraterrestrial life continues to expand" "We are putting the finishing touches on our Nebula software suite which will analyze all results from both SETI@home and SERENDIP IV. This work will result in two major papers." "This year saw the further commissioning and improving of SERENDIP VI / FASTBurst" "We continue to obtain raw data from Berkeley's Breakthrough Listen program" "From Green Bank, we will be getting data from observations of galaxies and targets selected by the...TESS program." "Parkes will soon be conducting a survey plane of our own Milky Way galaxy and we will be distributing those data as well." "Please spread the word about SETI@home and encourage people to participate." "Second, SETI@home needs the funding to obtain the hardware and develop the software required to handle new data sources." "I'm hoping that you will give generously to our efforts." Ok. So. We have a few possibilities. None are promising. First, we were all erroneously lied to in this email, and this was a cash grab and those who donated, LAWYER UP TIME BABY! If the email was, in fact, truthful, then SOMETHING HAS CHANGED AND WE'RE NOT BEING TOLD WHAT. I fail to identify a 3rd possibility. Perhaps the community might shake it's tendency to have the attention span of a goldfish, remember things like this email THESE PEOPLE SENT, and HOLD THEM TO TASK. Anyone? |

Much as I love this project, and have personally invested thousands in it, communication from project staff to the volunteers has always been horrendous.
I think the simplest explanation is that highly skilled and educated scientists got sick of playing IT support and trying to keep a crumbling infrastructure running when they could be doing "real science" instead. For the past two years it seemed to me that the enthusiasm just wasn't there any more. While I'm sure there are good reasons, I'm personally pretty hacked off at how this has been handled. But, as noted above, effective communication to us "peons" has never been part of the S@H skill-set for the 7 years I've been here. Just my .002. |

Hi Jim, I believe you hit the nail directly on the head! Look at the condition SETI has been in for the past several months. I believe you are correct in your assessment. Hello Is there any infrastructure that would allow us to process/do research? They have released "raw data" but I probably lack the technical competence to create some to do any data cleanup and/or analysis. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

When I'm out of Seti wu's, I'll be running Milkyway and Einstein. At least the forums will be here. Guess I'll be devoting my Linux machine to the Einstein@home folks when its Seti tasks are done . See you guys there ... hey they have a wordlink thread there too! I'm putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all, I think, that any conscious entity can ever hope to do. |

If the 'volunteer' section is closing on 31st march, then why is my PC still downloading data to be processed, that has a 'early May' deadline ? |

If the 'volunteer' section is closing on 31st march, then why is my PC still downloading data to be processed, that has a 'early May' deadline ? Mar. 31 is only when new work will stop being made. The servers will still be around for a while to receive results and send out re-sends for invalids, etc. |

This is so sad. I've literally been running this project for half my life. I began in 2002! How about a nice paper certificate for contributors with 1,000,000+ credit? Something of significance or memorabilia? |

If I were the paranoid type I would probably think that the real reason for stopping was because we've known the ET's have been here for years and it's just silly to keep looking. |

I would like to remind everyone of an email we all got dated December 27, 2019. I would like to hear the comments from administration. It definitely seems contradictory. On one hand, only a few months ago it sounded like there would be tons more data coming from multiple sources for us all to process. Now, it's hibernation and pretty sudden at that. I think it's like some others have already said. The IT issues are taking away from their available time to perform the next stage of the work and that is deemed more important. On the other had, I'm not sure I agree with the "diminishing returns" bit. Perhaps for their immediate goals it is true but it's not as if the whole sky has been analyzed in every way possible. Until that happens, there's every reason in the world to keep looking and there seems to be a lot of data still available or potentially forthcoming to look at. |

everyone can write what they want here, but nobody will receive a qualified answer! not after 20 years of voluntary help. that is very poor. we have had 20 years. you don't have an hour to answer a few important questions ---- WE WANT YOU ---- - Space Quest Website - |

If what my computers have analyzed needs to be reanalyzed, then why isn't our computers doing it to help out? that's the problem. and nobody will answer it. it is incomprehensible to me how little information all participants are satisfied with. after all these years, just a brief announcement. ---- WE WANT YOU ---- - Space Quest Website - |

What about PANOSETI ? Thanks for the post. Hadn't heard a thing about this new project. You would have thought it would have been mentioned in the original announcement. This article does the best to explain it. https://news.berkeley.edu/story_jump/new-telescope-to-look-for-laser-pulses-from-life-around-other-planets/ Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
