Funny, I just lighlighted "calculate payroll tax deductions for Linux" in your post and Googled. It came up with opentaxsolver instantly as the first result at the top of the page.

I use GnuCash for my personal finances and it seems to be a pretty well fleshed out finance program that is targeted mainly at business use.

That is not for payroll deductions, that is for individual tax returns and note it is the 2017 version. Payroll taxes are different in all 50 states, DC, PR and of course every foreign country, IRS and most states have already released the 2019 tables. As you should know it has to handle everything from FICA to Disability Insurance to Workers Compensation and even wage garnishments say for a child support order. Oh it is nice if it interfaces with your bio-metric time clocks.

....which leaves the user at the mercy of the reliability of your internet connection.

Oh, didn't I copy that? You get a Gigabit connection to their servers with the subscription....

No that is their outgoing bandwidth to you, it does nothing for your home connection.

Do I need a fast connection?

We recommend a minimum of 15Mbps, so a DSL, Coax or Fiber connection works perfectly fine. Shadow automatically adapts to the available bandwidth. You can use the Shadow apps on Windows, macOS and Android via Wi-Fi or even 4G.

The fastest connection I have available is 10Mbps and it has a very bad habit of playing yo-yo with my internet.

Lawyers have been able to craft licenses so as to absolve the coder from all responsibility for any disaster and make it a contract of adhesion. Isn't that contract provision the entire basis of FLOSS?

Good poke to push a confluence of confusion there... There is a world of difference between paying money for goods and services versus having and enjoying the freedom to use and modify and develop software.

In the IT world, 'tis unbelievable that certain mega-corps seem to push a business model whereby their clients pay money to then have them forced/coerced/duped into signing up to somehow having purchased a big 'nothing'. Indeed further, the clients seem to resign themselves into signing themselves into restrictions and enslavement! And to pay yet more for that!! Who would believe it!

And then there is the world of FLOSS whereby software is enshrined as a right to be used and developed and to be kept available for all and any use. See the GPL for example. No money to be paid, the software is kept available to be picked up and used. Can you imagine that! To enjoy the unfettered freedom to use and modify and develop software!

Good sense should prevail despite the profiteering of lawyers and despicables who profit from perpetrating abuse...

Thank you for confirming yet again the only people who can, er should attempt to use FLOSS are ones who have the money to pay a team of software engineers to fix the problems. That isn't an end user!
End users have to use what is available bugs and all. End users have to wait for others to make patches. To an end user FLOSS or M$ is identical in this respect.
To an end user he can't sue FLOSS any more than he can sue M$ for a bug.

Now they want to know your telephone number as well. From the newest Windows 10 Insider blog:

Signing in to Windows with password-less Microsoft accounts

We’re pushing forward on eliminating passwords and keeping your accounts safe with another cool feature. Today, we’re announcing support for setting up and signing in to Windows with a phone number account, without having to create, or deal with the hassle of a password!  If you have a Microsoft account with your phone number, you can use an SMS code to sign in, and set up your account on Windows 10. Once you’ve setup your account, you can use Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, or a PIN (depending on your device capabilities) to sign in to Windows 10. No password needed anywhere!

Just as the advice by NIST is to not use SMS text as a possible attacker can have taken over your phone number (so-called SIM hacking) and with that they can log in on anything you have set the 2 factor authentication for.

Just got cumulative update KB4483234 for Windows 10 Version 1803. The PC was running 8 Atlas@home tasks from LHC@home using VirtualBox 5.2.22 and they all survived.
