This is the update that has been giving me problems, and from what I read on Microsoft forums, I am not alone. In my case it won't install, but takes about 8 reboots, 4 of which fail, and 4 reset it to before the update, before it returns to normal, then tells me I need the update. :( I expect it will be straightened out this week, but I really don't know. Yesterday a bunch of updates rolled in for 7 and 8.1. We urgently need a further update on "updates to avoid" - please. ;) Aloha, Uli |

Yesterday a bunch of updates rolled in for 7 and 8.1. The only suspicious one I'm seeing - 3138612 for Windows 7, ...15 for win 8.1 - was already included in the 'version 7' list posted on 3rd. March (message 1769102). |

It's beginning: Windows patch KB 3139929: When a security update is not a security update. Microsoft buried a 'Get Windows 10' ad generator inside this month's Internet Explorer security patch for Windows 7 and 8.1 If Microsoft's documentation is correct, installing Patch Tuesday's KB 3139929 security update for Internet Explorer also installs a new Windows 10 ad-generating routine called KB 3146449. Many people -- present company included -- feel that putting an ad generator inside a security patch crosses way over the line. In fact, you have to ask yourself if there are any lines any more. |

Deja vu all over again: Microsoft reissues KB 2952664, KB 2976978, KB 2977759 The three Win7/8.1 updates have returned and brought the warmed-over KB 3138612 and 3138615 Windows Update patches with them. I have seen KB3035583 as a new optional update, Holly had it and KB2952664 as an important update. |

It's beginning: Looks like they are going to force everyone into not checking for updates. |

Looks like they are going to force everyone into not checking for updates.Sounds like their numbers aren't going the way the marketing department told them and the big bosses are terrified they won't have enough hook line and sinker when they begin the monthly charge to use W10! |

OMG, this new despicable intrusion by M$ is AWFUL. I guess just add IE to the "don't update" list? What other updates will M$ do this to? River Song (aka Linda Latte on planet Earth) "Happy I-Phone girl on the GO GO GO" |

No, I use Firefox, but was unsure if I could uninstall I.E. or, if I were to do so, don't think it would stop M$ from sending me IE updates. :( I guess tho that leaving I.E. installed and just ignoring any updates for it is the easiest thing to do. It's beginning: Alright. Adding that one to my list (not posting a version 8 yet.. I'll wait for another update or two to need to be added). Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Something weird going on here on one of my systems. I'd allowed it to install the Windows Updates, but for KV3138612. I unchecked that one and hid it from the updates list. Updates done, we let the system reboot... and nothing. No BIOS screen, all that the TV said was that it didn't have a signal. Rebooted again, still nada. Rebooted again and Windows System Auto-Repair kicked in, chose to put it back to a previous known good configuration, it sat there for 30 minutes doing something. Then it told me it couldn't auto-repair this problem and if I wanted to let MS know of that. Well no, what could they do? So it powered down, I rebooted. And booted into Windows. Which is slow, but that's because it's installing or uninstalling something. I see the TrustedInstaller bop up and down in the task manager. Anyway, checking in Windows Update, Update history, I see top of the list KB3138612 and outcome failed. What? Why has it installed when I explicitly told it not to? And was that the cause of my no-boot? Goes to show that the Windows 10 crap is really crap in itself. Oh, this afternoon I went and tried to install and run Winamp 5.666 on the Windows 10 laptop. Took me 30 minutes to get it installed and playing Radio Caroline through SHOUTCast. Had to resort to running Winamp in Windows 7 compatibility mode as else I couldn't add any stations through the Online Services. Now each time I start Winamp I get the question if I want to start the app, then if I want to start in compatibility mode. No, not irritating to have to press Yes twice to just play some music. Wish I could return that laptop to Windows 8.1, as it was fast and didn't have crap like this. It would also do 6 hours with the battery, where with Windows 10 I am lucky to reach 4 hours. |

I've seen numerous reports that if you have Windows 7 and previously noted KB3035583 installed, it is now starting to install Windows 10 automatically, without any notification or permission being given. It does give a 30-day opt-out option after the restart... but really. Great time to get GWX Control Panel if you haven't already. |

Great time to get GWX Control Panel if you haven't already. I've had it installed for over a month - so far so good. I've found an update to an article I listed in a previous post (Message 1768671). Updated 3/12/16 > How to block Windows 10 upgrades on your business network (and at home, too) Here is a newer (3/11/16) article that can be added to the list: > How existing Windows users can refuse Microsoft's Windows 10 update |

It does give a 30-day opt-out option after the restart... but really. OMG, OMG, How COOL the GWX Control Panel is !! It is AWESUM!! I feel MUCH safer now with my beloved Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I was so so afraid of losing the ability to run "Win XP Mode" on it. May I please ask a dumb question? It has been a long time since I looked for M$ updates. I have my PC set to "download updates but do not install w/o permission." However, I have forgotten a few things. I know if I click Start / Control Panel / Review your computer's status (under System & Security) I get a screen with MANY options. Down on the bottom left is "Windows Update." I assume I click this and it searches for updates. I then see, after the search, a page that shows the 'important updates' and 'optional updates' available. Respectively, I have 50 & 17. I forgot HOW to HIDE the bad ones? I remember you check a box or something, but just don't remember the details? How to remove certain updates from view? If I look at my KB list of bad updates I can then hide them. This will leave me with security updates i really should install along with 'net framework' updates i should also install. How to i hide bad files? Thank you kind gentlemen, and the few ladies out there :) River Song (aka Linda Latte on planet Earth) "Happy I-Phone girl on the GO GO GO" |

Right-click the updates you don't want in the list. You will be presented with the hide option. Then hit the OK button at the bottom. You should then see the unwanted update in the Restore Hidden Update selection in the left window.
