Why do so many pictures have them standing up like meerkats? Maybe so they can spot food easier. :D The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

They've got a new website for Angela! Wonderful!!! I shall closely monitor the developments! Why do so many pictures have them standing up like meerkats? Raccoons love to investigate things and they often stand on two legs if they think it will help them see or grab something more easily. In my Avatar shot of little "Bravesy" (taken a few years ago) this little fellow was standing up to better view something one of his siblings was eating. Since raccoons naturally stand on two legs when it suits them, it is not hard to teach them to do this on purpose. I have easily taught several friendlier visiting raccoons over the years to stand up to get treats. I start by simply raising a little scoop of food above their eye level. Up they go, and down come the treats. With a little practice this stimulus-response-consequence sequence can be shaped to a simple hand command. Sadly, my current visitors are not hand or even scooped trained. The two raccoons we have seen most regularly this winter are very, very shy. Fear over-rides their curiosity every time. In my experience, a fearless raccoon is an easily trained raccoon. I have great hopes for training this summer's new crop of babies. There are usually one or two brave raccoon babies in every litter of four or five. Of course, with raccoons, one is never really sure of who is training whom!!! From the raccoon's perspective, he is pretty convinced that he has me signal trained to toss him food. And he may just be right about that!!! (Suddenly, I feel so used....) I am thrilled that so many of you have developed some fondness for these magnificent creatures. They are widely misunderstood and much maligned by those who do not understand their ways. |

Regarding the "Lunchtime" clips... OMG!!! Crazy Raccoon Lady bows at the feet of the master!!! I could not help but notice that we always see "the hand that feeds them" but never the man. Scarecrow, is that you???!!!???!!! LOL! We routinely keep grapes in our fridge for our little backyard friends too. I don't hand-feed my raccoons though. Their tiny little teeth look a bit too sharp to me. (I have never tried feeding them store bought cookies, as I do not keep such abominations in my kitchen.) I am expecting the summer litters of babies to show up any time between late June and mid-July here. I cannot wait to be a great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandma! |

Real Cookies...Is there Coffee here to go with them? Eric's 40th birthday present from me (several years ago, now) was a coffee machine that is so smart it pretty much drives to the store, buys itself some beans, fills, grinds, blends, self-cleans etc. That machine intimidates the heck out of me! I'm pretty sure that when I'm at work, Eric's coffee machine sits around the house doing the New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle... in ink!!! I don't care for coffee, but Eric seems to think the machine is worth the ridiculous amount of kitchen counter space it commandeers. |
