Earthquakes ease the strain locally, but can add strain other places along the fault. Yes, but we're talking about a complex of faults, not just one -- something like 281 named faults (and fault zones) in California and Nevada. The folks at Caltech are saying that the San Andreas fault (the one that scares everyone) is at least 60 miles away, and the area around the event is riddled with faults -- so very little effect. Then again, they said Earthquakes were more likely worldwide after a quake like this one. |

The aftershocks in Mexico continue at an alarming rate though - and some significant ones at 5+ Earthquakes ease the strain locally, but can add strain other places along the fault.[/quote] I was mainly reacting to the idea that the aftershocks were coming at an "alarming" rate -- if anything, the rate is pretty normal, and we haven't seen anything in the low-sixes (at least as I'm writing this) which would normally be expected. One of the seismologists described the size and frequency so far as "textbook." |

Sorry I'm late, Yeah I felt It, At 1st I thought the wind was shaking the house, But I noticed the wind was no faster than usual, So It was only an Earthquake that was far away(rolling motion). Nothing damaged here, At least not by a Quake at any rate, Just some wind damage(Carport), I have already called someone about that. One of these days that San Andreas fault is gonna go BIG time. I really hope that the authorities have all the necessary and appropriate plans in place. There is two roads between LA and Ventura / Santa Barbara Counties to the north. The roads goes though a mountain pass. The disaster plan includes blocking the roads at the pass so the multitude from LA will not invade our modest resources to the north. |

The aftershocks in Mexico continue at an alarming rate though - and some significant ones at 5+ Anything near the average rate over the previous month would be scary, I think. |

I think I felt it up here in Northern Arizona, but only as a slight tremor. Then again, you're a bit closer to it than I am there in the Kingman area; I didn't feel a thing here in Prescott. |

I think I felt it up here in Northern Arizona, but only as a slight tremor. Just be glad Lake Mead doesn't need to fill from the bottom up again, As that's a heck of a lot of water in there now and It ain't even full now, Which I heard caused some quakes as the lake filled up behind Hoover Dam originally. Iceland getting many earthquakes again right now - and reports that a new volcanic eruption has started under a glacier. Bad new for Iceland as this has caused evacuations with widespread flooding anticipated if/when the glacier starts to melt. Iceland continuing to shake and the plume of ash from the Volcano has reached the UK closing Airports in the North. Another article & pics here. |
