http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080623/us_nm/carlin_dc LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71. Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters. Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court. In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin's routine were indecent, and that the government's broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening. Carlin's comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed. "I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas," he told Reuters in a 2001 interview. Carlin, who wrote several books and performed in many television comedy specials, is survived by his wife Sally Wade, and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall. George Carlin dies in LA at 71 You beat me to it mrgray. Thank You! I noticed that you beat me to it by 10 minutes. I've asked that my thread be closed. I've often quoted the man. He was a modern day genius. He could take any subject & make fun of it. I'll miss his cutting remarks concerning religion, and politics. I'll miss him dearly. One of the few YouTube videos I can actually post.... THIS COUNTRY IS FINISHED* GEORGE CARLIN ON COUNTDOWN Account frozen... |

Does anyone have any idea how difficult it is to find a YouTube video that we can share? And how can you share without sharing who he really was? It's that we have a wee little problem sharing the seven dirty words you can never say in the SETI Cafe. PROUD TO BE TFFE! |

I always respected George Carlin's ability to poke fun at the way the human race conducts itself and the many hypocrisies presented by those who would tell others how to live their lives...... He was a wordsmith who used language to make us take another look at the way we act and think about the world we live in. Nothing was off of George's radar, and nothing was sacred. Religion, politics, and the use of language itself were all his targets. And whether you agreed with his viewpoints or not....sometimes you just had to find yourself laughing at the truth in what he said. I will miss him and his irreverent way of looking at the nature of human life. Rest in peace George, your work here is done. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Carlin's comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed. Well, was he right? ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Carlin remembers Carlin Eleven years before his death, George Carlin wished he could edit his own obituary: http://www.yahoo.com/s/905107 . "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss |

As much as I hate to say it CR, but that isn't a true quote.... Yeah, the give away was the “and pray too seldom.†part. George was a full on atheist, so, just a guess here, but he likely never prayed. I am sure that he would have appreciated the irony in the ‘rest in peace’ references (as for why: see above.) So George, we know that you are not resting in peace (or resting in anything else). You’re just dead. The world will miss him, tho. and for those who find this post to be in bad taste: I promise, George would have approved. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.
