We went to $3.89/gallon in Green Bay, WI last night. I still saw a station at $3.79 this afternoon, but didn't need gas. I pity the long haul truckers paying $4.60/gallon for diesel, and having 200 gallon tanks. Really cuts into the profits...

And a little off topic...heaters are $5.00 a pack...dang, I gotta quit one of these days...

Knowing that most Semi's get about 4 to 6 MPG... It is sure going to make the prices of EVERYTHING go up. Crude at $134.96/BBL right now, and the experts say it will get up to $300/BBL by the end of the year. That makes around $10 per gallon of gas, and probably $12 per gallon of Diesel. Heating oil is skyrocketing, and Natural Gas is sure to follow the trend. I plan on using wood pellets or some other type of biomass to heat my home next winter. I am also looking into some sort of "Brown's Gas" or HHO system to use in my vehicles, to at least increase mileage.

I am amazed that the fuel in the US is still less than half the price of the UK - and pleased too seeing as I'll be there on vacation in a few weeks and have a few thousand miles of roadtrip planned - in a thirsty Cadillac of all cars. There is no way I could afford to run something as big and thirsty as that in the UK!

Here in the midwest (Kansas)

87 octane is $3.79
92 octane is $3.89
97 octane is $3.99

I wish we had those higher octanes...

87 Regular, $3.99

89 Mid grade, (I didn't look, too expensive.)

91 Super Unleaded, (I didn't look, WAY too expensive.)

This is here in California.

E85 Ethanol is $3.29

Message 756781 - Posted: 22 May 2008, 10:19:17 UTC - in response to Message 756407.

In the UK we have fuel tax and VAT (@ 17.5%) loaded on the price of fuel before we put it in our tanks. This maans our greedy Treasury take about 68% of the money we pay for our fuel, and they have done very very well from the rising price of road fuel and the Tax gives the UK the most expensive fuel in Europe.

This raises the question - how expensive is your fuel just now?

I am currently paying - £1.209 per litre for derv (that is diesel) and £1.159 per litre for petrol.

This means a UK gallon costs - £5.50 for derv and £5.27 for petrol.

Converting this to US gallons and correcting for an exchange rate of ~ $1.96 per £1.

The US gallon would cost us - $8.98 for derv and $8.61 for petrol.

The rough £1 to Euro exchange is £1.00 buys EURO1.26.

So, our derv is EURO1.52 per litre and petrol is EURO1.46 per litre.

How much are you paying?

I paid yesterday 0.984 €/litre for gasoline 98 octans.
For metric conversions, please see: Metric convertor
An example: 1 liter fresh milk at the supermarket around the corner costs 0.95€
I am seriously thinking about drinking gasoline and using milk for my car!!!LOL
Taxes are about the same here as they are in the UK but we still have some advantage/discount, because of being so far apart (from the mainland). Some extra rules apply on certain products as gasoline.

Is this likely to be a home made HHO Gas kit or one made for the automotive aftermarket?

Googling for this item seems to give US based locations for the kit, and mostly home made.

Just an update...we went to $3.99/$4.08/$4.20 this morning. Still one more day before the holiday weekend, let's see if we can top $4.00 a gallon....

Petrol/Gasoline prices cannot continue to rise, eventually, it will get just too high ($5.00, $8.00, $10.00 or even $20.00)..... Lots more people will start walking, taking less trips, and we'll see more cars that run on bio-fuels, or complete non-gasoline/petrol tanks.... what are they running those rich, new cars these days.... that algae stuff, sugar corn, water, Oxygen, Hydrogen, electricity.... whatever people want....... that won't make the oil companies very happy will it..... (Exxon, BP, Shell etc.).........

I am thinking home-made. Might have to buy the electronic part that will trick the O2 sensors though. Otherwise they will continue to dump gas/diesel into the motor.

But what will happen is the oil companies will cap the price of fuel at $8 or $10.00, then we will be between a rock and a hard place, not cheap enough to be economical, but still affordable.

The market speculators are driving market prices, along with our "reserves" reports. They are making a mint, of which the oil companies get a good share. The royalty owners (the people that own the actual oil rights), get about 1/6th of the actual profit from the sale of the actual crude. The oil companies get their share of it when the crude is sold to some middleman that jacks up the price and sells it to the refineries, who in turn jack up the price and sell the refined products to the middlemen that distribute the fuel to the gas stations, who in turn get theirs. The government gets sales tax on each sale, from each and every one along the way, and then they add their fuel taxes, road taxes, etc.

Currently, there is very little being done in the U.S., as far as crude oil exploration drilling, or drilling in proven fields. There hasn't been a serious refinery built here in about 30 years.

The current situation is the result of the snowball that started with the "oil shortage" we had in the early 80's. They shut down a lot of producing wells back then, in order to drive up prices. I was there.

When are they going to bring in all the environmentalists that have prevented us from drilling and building refineries in front of the Senate like they did the oil execs?

They will have to look in the forests for them, and pry them away from their trees first.
