Maybe its time to start asking those 120,000 people who goto the visitor center for a $10 donation each? It wont be enough to keep it open but its a start.

I'm not familiar with the setup there but as they said the visitor centre itself would stay open does that suggest that the 2 halfs (the visitor centre and the operations end) are actually financially independant?

$10 is nothing to see an attraction... If it is worth it that is.

Has anyone here been there as a general visitor?

The visitor center charges admission; I forget how much since as a telescope user I get free access to the place. Definitely less than $10. The view is... priceless.

http://www.jibaros.com/arecibo.htm

The URL above has some pre-dish shots of the sinkhole.

Last year the fee was $4.50- with a break for kids and seniors.

Lots of folks go into the karst country- I'd sure hate to see the place deactivated...cc

10 dollars is nothing to see an attraction until you start taking in other expenses. Such as a flight to Puerto Rico....accomodations...etc...

That is true but is also true of any other place we might visit and want a day out somewhere.

I think that sites of scientific and cultural interest should be funded via government or charity routes so that even the less well off can benefit. That would be my perfect world though - but then in that world there would be no one too poor to pay for a day out either..

I've never seen organised trips (flight etc:) being mention here on the SETI boards. Maybe that's a marketing loss.

The only thing booming is Bush's bull[blank]. BTW, this is a NSF (government agency) decision.

Cuts threaten world's largest telescope..

Just to be controversial. That news story told us the bad news but suggested that savings might fund a new 20 times more powerful telescope.

It might actually mean we have to start the whole SETI program again as we spiral our ability to reach further and further out into the stars but would that be a bad thing?

Whilst I am all for keeping old technology in use we upgrade our (and SETI's) computers don't we and most of us forget the older less powerful technology quite quickly?

(I make this statement assuming that a new better telescope will happen and that this 'bigger telescope' suggestion wasn't just an empty promise.. Which it could be..)

OK I can take it. You can shoot me down now :o)

Methinks you're pushing borderline treason...
