Snail mail??? What's that? I'm going to give it a shot, but it's going to have to be a Hallmark card. My printer's shot.

If I recall, this is about a decade old. It has been done already.

This one seems legit.

Let's hope it doesn't turn bad for him and his family as it has done to others.

I know I'm going to come across "cold and heartless" to some, but I would urge the OP and the mods to take this one down. The reason is because of what ended up happening to Craig Shergold and his family, several businesses, and the burden upon email servers world-wide because of the same thing that he attempted. He has tried to tell people that he's recovered. The flood of mail simply cannot be stopped.

I know that hiding this message won't stop what's likely to happen: that either he recovers and the cards are no longer needed or that he dies and so the cards are no longer needed, but they continue to pour in over the course of decades, becoming a financial burden upon countless millions of people world-wide due to increasing costs of mail carriage and/or burden upon email servers causing increase in the cost of providing services.

:sigh:

Edit: That being said, I am not reporting the post. I urge Pawly to. I know it is a good deed Pawly, but it most likely will have lasting damaging after-effects...

HHHMMMMMMM??? Some thing to definatly think about. I would not object if the gerneral consensus is for removal. But the fact of the matter is that it is already widespread across the internet and I thought that crunchers here might like to send wishes.

I will let someone more versed in economics debate whether it creates burden or not. I think the Posties will be woking over time and not be too upset.

I think it depends on what the wishes are of the family and child. If it's some news story that got circulated around and the family never said that's what they wanted then we shouldn't contribute to it. But if they want it I say let them have it. "Be careful what you wish for. You may get it."

I know Pawly... The problem is that these "appeal to human good nature" things turn into real and significant burdens. Most likely what will happen is that the fact that it doesn't specify May 30, 2007, as when the child turns 8, this thing will go on year after year after year, turning into decades, just like the Craig Shergold request. Consider that the Shergold request was made in 1989 and 18 years later it is still consuming the resources of several agencies and the Shergold family themselves have had to move. I've seen it stated that their former residence ended up with the equivalent of their own postal code due to the volume of mail.

Furthermore, the Guinness Book of World Records officially emplores people to stop requests like this. While this specifically is not the same as the Shergold request ("Birthday" vs. "Get Well"), Guinness has ceased accepting any attempts at beating Shergold's record because they learned the consequences of this particular World Record. My guess is, they will not even allow this as an entry. They too ask people not to participate in the perpetuation of these kinds of things.

Like I said, I know you feel it is a "good deed", and indeed it is. However, it will not stop now that it has started. You requesting this single note to come down won't stop that from happening. What it can stop is if other people start emailing it out to others based on your post being seen by them. It snowballs from there...

Again, I emplore you to ask for the post to be taken down, and this is my final note in this thread...

Edit: OK, my reply to Misfit was my final note :-)

Thanks,

Brian

My guess is that the family simply does not understand what will happen to them and/or they are not thinking about this right now. Someone close to them should've suggested to them that this was no longer a valid Guinness category (due to Shergold and the subsequent fallout from that).

As I stated previously, Brian. I would not object if this is the general consensus.

If you folks agree with Mr. Silvers, Please post "CLOSE".
If you want this to stay up until (I dunno) June 30th, Please post, "Mail".

I will keep an eye on things and request that this come down June 30th in any case.

But I'm afraid that even if we close this thread, the story is out there anyway.

I think this family really wanted to make their sick child happy, but they have not investigated the stories before and they have no idea of what they now have started. Pawly, you mention yourself that his wish is "to receive the largest amount of birthday cards so that he can be entered into the Guinness Book of Records.", so he and his family is obviously not aware of that the Guinness Book of Records doesn't accept those records anymore.

To me it's a clear case of "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it" and I'm afraid that this family will regret bitterly later on when the birthday cards continue to roll in. I sincerely hope this kid gets well, else I don't even want to think of the rest... (Us who have lost close relatives know how painful it is to receive mail to the deceased several months after they passed away, and that is only a few letter!)

Why try to second guess other peoples requests/decisions...they want to do something for their child, and if things should get messy...that's their business. If you attempt to protect everyone from every possible contingency, none of us could ever do anything.

I'm inclined towards DB on this. I say mail until his birthday - May 30th. After that it would be in bad taste, especially if you weren't sure of the boy's status.

I'm sure every good parent wants what their sick kid wants. I speak from experience.
