Looks like it's still quiet in here?

Good morning Es and Mike ... and anyone else lurking?

Nice bright sunny day, with very high white whispy clouds. Wind looks quite strong, and, my impression, is it is cold outside.(Still in bed looking out of the window!).

Better get up and feed the animals, including out failing 19 year old black and white cat.

She will "stay in" today as her fur is getting thin, she has lost all fat (really boney now) and is going bald on her head. Must feel the cold badly now?

Hi John, sorry to hear about the elderly puss. There was a thread on this some time ago, and many of us have been there before. You have my best wishes.

Little Minty seems to be lively enough in herself. But she no longer grooms and is looking quite tatty.

I have had to cut off a load of cots (clumped balls of hair) and similar all over her. As part of this she seems to have developed aa yellowish sticky to her head fur, which cots loosley and can be pulled off. This is where she is going bald.

She is eating (just little bits) OK, and doing her toiletry OK. This includes copious amounts of wee, which, I believe, indicates failing kidneys. Still she is a good age (19).

We are expecting to find her kaput one morning, but her quality of life (attention, running around, eating and toilet) is OK so far.

Hey John..I've been asked to pass this message on to you from someone who can't be with us right now. He says:

"..please tell John Clark that his tired old Cat has Diabetes and needs insulin, If not then the animal is suffering terribly... "

I hope this won't worry you, but it sounds like you should get her to the vet.

I do have the compensation of 6 dogs as our current company. Unfortunately two of them are getting on as well, and have injuries/issues to cope with as well.

The oldest dog is our Bischeon, Mandy, who suffers from Cushings syndrome.

This causes kidney failure which, we have been told, can kill her. She is on a fairly toxic 1 tablet a day drug and is in full remission. The vet informed us she would live between 1 and 3 years from the diagnosis. We passed the 3 years a while ago, and in February next she will have been on tablets 5 years, and heading to her 14th birthday.

The next oldest, and crippled dog is Sammy. He is one of our 4 Shih-Tzu dogs (1 boy, 3 girls).

Sammy went blind in both eyes very suddenly about 12 to 18 months ago ... eye damage which caused blood vessles to grow in to the damaged area on the clear lense, and a cateract.

Last January we found a large lump on the thigh of his off side hind leg. That is UK off side, or the RHS. This was diagnosed as a fatty lump and removed. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a slow growing cancer down near the tendons, and he cannot now use that leg. The lump now looks very large, and is causing his spine to bend away from it. However, he seems in fine fettle himself, so we wait!

It is now a year since we lost our Welsh Corgie, and 9 nonths since our Westie died. Both were 17 years old, so they had a good innings. But we still miss their foibles and habits.

The loss of Wesley our Westie was about the same time as Bodders lost his Westie.

Still life adjusts and goes on!

Esme ... thanks for the feedback, and possible diagnosis.

The vet looked at her, for her booster injection, about a month ago. His view was Minty was just very old. The pointers he used were ...

* Loosing body fat (boney, and that happened to our 17 year old poodle, Candy, some 15 years ago);
* Weeing a great deal (happened to Candy as well);
* Knowing her age.

Looking at her behaviour she seems no different to normal, just slower. She chats to us, and the dogs we allow to see her. She is eating (although small bits), she is drinking OK (evidenced by the wee and other toilet in her moggy toilet bowl), etc. Moreover, animals kidneys regularly start to fail as they get very old.

She is giving no evidence of being in pain, especially when I set about her a few days ago to gently remove, and cut out, the cots in her fur. She did object on 2 occasions as I cut a massive cot off along the lower part of her spine. I read that the cot eas large and pulling hair tight on her skin, causing some discumfort? So, I am sure with the evidence we have seen, Minty is not in constant pain (difficult to tell in an animal I know).

I will discuss this with Sheila and make up our minds. However, the fact she is as old as she is is the major factor we need to bear in mind!

MY vet told me to give my dog half of a tylenol when my dog was in pain years ago. It did seem ot help, we used the hard tablet kind. Mine is now long gone, 5 years or so. You might want to talk to your vet about it. Mine was about 50 lbs, shepherd/husky/lab mix, very pretty and we called her Sandy because of her color. Shih-szu's are tiny in comparison.

Hey mikey, I don't know how you do it, but if I reach 5000 rac I'm going to unplug all my PCs and give 'em a damn good thrashing with a branch. They're just too slow, and if they don't pull their socks up, I'm recycling them in the green bin!

If Tylenol is the same as what we call paracetamol , it's very toxic to cats.

Edit: Just checked, they are the same thing..on no account give to your cat.

Ah, excellent Tom Waits. It's been awhile. I don't think i've heard much of Tom Waits since Bone Factory.

@ A/C Tom quit smokin' (and drinkin') a number of years ago now - and this 'altered' 'is voice - so he uses a megaphone (i guess that's what they call 'em) to make 'is voice sound the same as it used to be - he's doin' well and 'is Music has gotten really good (though it always was . . . imho)

I believe Es is correct, in that paracetamol causes liver damage in cats. Just like human chocolate does in dogs.

My boy Shih-Tzu is on norocarp for any discomfort, rather than pain. But I would not give any medicines to animals unless vet approved or recommended.
