Worry when you pay UK prices ... currently an equivalent of you paying $6.82 a US gallon

The big difference in the US and Europe, including the UK, is the vehicles available. Clearly we pay much more than the US for cars/mini vans/SUVs/etc. But the benefit is performance equal or better than the US vehicles, and a fuel consumption of less than half.

For example a Euriopean VW Passat can cruise at 55+ mpg, while reaching 0-62.5 mph in 8 seconds and has a top speed of 140+ mph.

This is achieved via the high efficiency variable geometry TDIs we can get.

Agreed, when compared to you.

But you are 1 of 2 Euroean countries with taxation policies that make road fuel more expensive than the UK.

The other advantage you have is delivery of good public services.

Where as in the UK most public services under Labour are failing more now, after 9 years of their interference than before thsy came to power.

The benefit to us is we have the most greedy Treasury Department in the World that thinks all money in the UK belongs to it, and they want their cut!

They will be taxing standing still in the street next!

When it hits $6.82/gal here in the US, maybe we'll stop seeing vehicles like this.

And who do you think that will hit the hardest, people that can afford cars like that, or people who can barely fill their gas tanks now?

Cordially,

It will hit everyone. Yeah, there will still be those with money to burn who still won't care. And there will be those who need fuel thirsty vehicles for work or to tow their horse trailers and boats and such. As for those who can barely fill their tanks now, they will simply have to cut expenses in other areas, acquire more fuel efficient vehicles (which I have already done personally) or pass the additional costs on to their business customers/clients. I do see a lot of people saying they can't afford to keep gas in their tank now, and yet they continue to drive inefficient vehicles for no good reason except they feel safer in a huge SUV. Eventually though, everyone will have to adapt. Prices will rise in virtually every segment of the economy to cover the additional fuel costs - that's already happening.

What do you drive Mike?

A BMW530CDI will touch 250 Kph, hit 0 - 100 Km in 7.2 seconds and return a fuel consumption of ~13.5 Km per litre. The more economic VW Golf TDIs will give slower speeds, but better consumptions - i.g. 0-100 Kph in 8.5 seconds, top speed @ 210 Kph and fuel consumption of 18.5-20 Km per litre.

This offsets the price of fuels quite dramatically compared the road ships run across in the US!
