We have a 19 year old black and white cat that has lived in our downstairs cloakroom since it was young. We do this to keep it away from our 6 dogs when it stays in over night.

Most cloaks have a toilet, which in the UK we call "bogs".

This means our cat, whose snooty name is Ariminta, answers to the name ...

"Bog Mog"

Where do you keep yours?

and

What's it called?

Es - I like your under cat (dog) Olive ... an individual after my own heart.

They are both beautiful and coal black. I bet they are soft. Certainly our Minty is, and very affectionate.

We lost a long haired black cat about 10 years ago (a companion of Minty). He was a scream ... use to dominate the neighbours mogs, not by fighting. He did it by means of intimidation ... no one better than him at intimidation.

After playing with him (my hands were covered with small scratches) on the roof of our car (he liked sitting in the sun there), he used to wash my sideboards. This went on for up to 10 minutes (really rough and left my skin raw). A great cat!

Name: we called him Twizzell
and
Place: he lived in the Garden Shed (daughter was asthematic) and had the run of all neighbours gardens (including ours) on the fields backing on to the house.

If you'd have said 'a litter box full' (maybe two) then I would agree fully.

Actually they all are very easy to live with. Like Es's Olive, Alexis tends to keep to herself and disappears at the sound of any strange voice. I still haven't found all of her hidey holes yet, she's very good at hide and seek.

Sass is the youngest and finds any small computer part a most wonderful toy. Half of his day is spent looking out the window, the other half is spent sprawled out on top the computer in his custom-made mini tower bunk bed. He's quite proficient with Linux.

Jake is the head honcho. Nothing happens without his approval. If I'm going to do any house cleaning, or have any guests over, I have to clear it with him first. He has a cache of about 25 various kitty toys. Nightly you'll hear him yowling loudly as he moves his toys around the house. He carries them in his mouth like a dog, and becomes very audible while in his transportation mode. He seems to keep track of the locations of his treasures and makes sure they are rotated in a timely fashion.

Speaking of dogs, they all live in harmony with Sammi Soso (not Sosa... named after that moderately famous baseball player from a couple years ago). She's a terrier mix that looks a lot like Benji of TV fame.

Best of all, they all let me live here too.

I'll add mine.

Sorry, no picture though. At least not yet, I'll post a link later.

Anyhow, her name is Suzy Q, nick named Suzy. :-) She's a shorthair, about 7 years old now. She's the queen of the house. Like Scarecrow's cat, everything has to go to her first before we do anything. This is her castle. LOL She also hides in many places that I have yet to find.

Her dislikes. Well. Thats a pretty long list, I'll try to keep it short.

People. Even me. LOL She growls like a dog. She lets me pet her, when she's in the mood to be petted. Otherwise its hands off, or I get a bloody stump back.

Dogs. Heh, she hates um. Both my black lab and my pitbull run when my cat comes out. Its funny.

Other animals. I had a ferret, and she was scared to death of it. My ferret has since gone to ferret heaven, in a much better place, not having the problems she had here. :-)

So thats it. :-) Its been very nice to read about all your cats here. This was a grand idea John, thank you!

Had a little Tortie named Jeepers. Loved to lick armpits :)
Had to let her go to sleep a few years back.

Now we have an Orange Tabby named Parquet. Got his tail stepped on a few times b/c he blends in with the parquet flooring in the house. Hence, his name.

He was just diagnoised with asthma. Poor thing is FIV positive and has diabetes too. But he's happy as a clam. Prefers my mom's bed and the living room chair for sleeping.

PJ, stands for Patches Jr., fourteen and a half, chocolate point siamese, eats everything, goes everywhere in the house, healthy as an ox.

Mouse, as in scared as a ... , PJ's sibling, lilac point siamese, eats too little, goes everywhere in the house, getting IVs because of bad kidney disease.

I assume you've all read "Tailchaser's Song" by Tad Williams.

If not, you may yet escape eternal shame as cat ownwers by reading it soon. Williams is also one of the most astounding writers of fantasy and sci-fi in the last decade - does both equally well, a rare achievement. BTW, that's not just my opinion. Phantom (loving black devil creature who I decided to be owned by when I rescued him) made me say so. He approves of Williams with a slow blink and a regal nod and thus it is so.

Oh, and I am permitted to pay rent for his entire apartment. Though lobster is entire too rarely on the menu, I believe I am forgiven due to frequent massages when demanded.

Without love, breath is just a clock ... ticking.

The one whose picture is my avatar is Dauntless. He was a street cat who didn't like being a street cat, so made himself a nuisance where I worked until I took him home. I figure he's about 12 years old. He lives where ever in the house he wants to, sleeps nights on the bed.

The other, without a linkable photo, is Figaro. He's a long haired, grey/brown tabby. He got his name from his first family because of Disney, got to keep it when he came to me because of Mozart and Rossini. Going on 13 this year. Definitely beta cat in this household, but also lives where ever he wants to, unless Dauntless wants to be there at the same time.

I guess you have all met Bouncer Jupiter as she's in my profile in all my projects.

Her real name is Luki Bouncer Jupiter. And as said in Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, she has at least 3 names, the one(s) I gave her, when I got her, and the one(s) I call her, such as Skattemus, Gøjsen, Elskede Mis, Mislingeunge, etc., and then there's the name she only knows herself.

She lives in the apartment with me, allowing me to pay the rent, the expences, her food, her catlitter. She's lying everywhere she wants to, in the bed, on the sofa, in my big chair, on my lap, when I watch tv, on top of me in bed, and lately she has found out she likes to crawl under my cover with me and feel cosy and warm.

She strongly dislikes (the right word might be hate?!) children, dogs, and the birds that flies around outside. But else she's the sweetest little princess, always with soft paws when she's pawing me to get my attention. And she loves to be held and hear sweet words whispered in her ears and have her coat petted.

As said in my profile, she has been a stray before I got her, so the outside world has no interest for her. I have tried to put a harness on her and take her outside with a leash, but she screamed of fear, because she thought I would kick her out. So no, no outside world for her, she's happy sitting inside and look out.

And let me now quote this from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats":

The Naming of Cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Here's a link to some of the feline friends I've known over the last several years. Most were stray or feral cats. Some were lucky enough to go on to proper homes, others are no longer with us due to various health problems. A book could be written about the fellow pictured at the top of the page referenced above. A cat's cat that answered to no one, lived by his own rules, and was one of the most independent and just plain 'tough' creatures I've ever seen, yet a gentle, regular, and welcome visitor for many years.

Back in the 1970s we had 2 cats and a dog. The former were Fluffy, a long haired tabby Sheila and I were given as a wedding presant in 1968, and Twizzell, I have mentioned before. Twizzell adopted us as a very hungry 12 week old ferrel cat, and stayed with until his death over 17 years later.

Imagine the scene on a foggy November day, about 1973, with the time about 7.30 am. I went out the front of the house and found Fluffy under a cuprus hedge being intimidated by a neighbour's cat.

Sheila came out at my call, and, unbeknown to either of us, so did Twizzell and Candy. It was as if they animals summed up Fluffy' plight, and decided to join in and out flank the offending cat.

Twizzell sneaked quietly to the right and approached the foreign cat from it's right rear. Candy quietly moved in on the cat's left rear, then barked.

The attacking cat immediatly changed it's attack to defence, and ran in to the gatherng fog. Visibility was about 25 feet by now.

As the neighbour's cat ran, so did out animals.

The cat dissappeared in to the fog with 2 cats and a dog after it. Although I could not see the outcome, I heard a bit of a ruckus, and out animals returned triamphunt and for breakfast.

We were never bothered by said neighbour's cat again, and they were newcomers to the district.

Hope you enjoed this little dip in to the past, and it was a true story.
