For the conspiracy minded:

* Bird flu scare.

* The scare is used by the U.S. government to justify the immediate purchase of 20 million doses of Tamiflu at $100 per dose (cost to U.S. taxpayers - 2 billion dollars). Note: this is only enough anti-viral medication to treat 2 million people, less than 1 in every 100 Americans.

Make that enough to treat about 500k cases. Double the dose for twice the period of time. H5N1 is stronger than most avian viruses. While most avian viruses are found only in the lungs and the gastro-intestinal tract, H5N1 is found throughout the body of the bird and in the eggs.
Those doses are to be reserved for health care workers and, naturally, goverment officials. Isn't that just too special! If you should catch it you can always stick a meat thermometer up your butt and stuff yourself in the oven until you reach an internal temp of 170F, at which point the virus will be dead, but then, you will be too. ;) But, you won't have the bird flu either.

See ya

But even D. Duck isn't immune from the bird flu, as you stated yourself! :-D

* Roche manufactures Tamiflu.

* A little research shows that the drug was actually developed by a company called Gilead Sciences that 10 years ago gave Roche the exclusive rights to market and sell Tamiflu.

* Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was made the chairman of Gilead Sciences in 1997. Rumsfeld had joined Gilead as a director in 1988. (James M. Denny is the current chairman.)

* Rumsfeld will likely profit handsomely from the Tamiflu purchase, the drug developed by Gilead Sciences. He is suspected to be a major Gilead stockholder.

Diseases and pandemics have existed all time:

Past pandemics that ravaged Europe

They have now found out that the Spanish Flu back in 1918 actually was bird flu!

... The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than the Great War, known today as World War I (WWI), at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in a single year than in four-years of the Black Death Bubonic Plague from 1347 to 1351. Known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe" the influenza of 1918-1919 was a global disaster.

it's just that the parody the cartoonist / comic is putting across may be humerous to those who are wealthy but China's people are not and many other countries are in the same boat, It's like AIDS all over again. Why?

I beg to differ with you, in the beginning AIDS was non survivable! Bird Flu DOES have people that have survived it. NOW there are people that are surviving for more than 15 years with AIDS. NEITHER is a death sentence, although to be honest AIDS is still extremely deadly in the lower income areas of the World. But drugs are helping people survive longer and longer. Some people have even tested negative for AIDS, years after testing positive for it.
Kind of like Lou Gehrigs disease...it is a death sentence for everyone EXCEPT Dr. Stephen Hawking! He has had the disease for over 20 years and is still alive. Most with Lou Gehrigs disease die within 3 to 4 years!!! NONE have lived as long as he has, NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!
The media has jumped on this band wagon and made EVERYONE aware of it. Kind of like Mad Cow disease, it was sooo bad they destroyed hundreds of thousands of cows in England a few years ago. Have you heard of in the last couple of months...did they find EVERY cow with it and eradicate it...no, the media has moved on to BIRD FLU!!!
The media is a story of the moment business, this means that they do as much story as they can get paid for and then they move on to something else. If CNN does a story and someone does not watch CNN but watches FOX instead, do they miss the story...NO, FOX picks up the story and runs with it, they don't want to be "scooped"! The becomes a frenzy and the story goes waaaay beyond what in reality the TRUE story is! Do NOT get me wrong Bird Flu is deadly and will KILL people!!! But a pandamenic...not a likley scenario. BUT it does not make NEWS if you say that, it gets you your 15 minutes of TV face time if you make dire predictions, even if you have no basis in fact to back them up. The Scientists are basing there "fears" on the fact that the last time a pandamenic swept the World was a VERY long time ago, they say "we are due", so this must be the one!!!
Remember the asteroid that was going to wipe out the Earth and extinguish life as we know it? It missed the Earth by several hundred million miles!!! But if you believed the media hype we would all be knee deep in stored water and other life sustaining staples right now!

Not in anyway a dig at you Dogbytes, it's just that the parody the cartoonist / comic is putting across may be humerous to those who are wealthy but China's people are not and many other countries are in the same boat, It's like AIDS all over again.

I tried to see the sardonic aspects of the toon. Neither the Bird Flu nor AIDS are laughing matters. You are very wrong about one thing, neither disease cares about where you are on the socio-economic ladder; just like the Black Death, it spares no one. One way people deal with their anxiety about something which is a danger to them, is to laugh at, or about, it. It might help to lighten up a little bit.

Oops, did someone just cough...?

Funny But NOT nice, it could be on our own doorstep anytime, Indonesia very close to Oz and they have a reported death, I am concerned for our kids (world wide).

Was it here of elsewhere I heard that one of the symtoms of bird flu was the uncontrollable urge to (defecate) on someone's windshield?

What you said (not what you did) brought tears to my eyes, but pardon me if I don't stand close to you... ;-)

Does this mean you're not coming with me and Siran on the Pon'fart gathering on Vulcan IV this new years eve?
We need a couple of more guys to practice on the new Fartette. You can do 2nd base, if you want. :o)

At least it wasn't a "pon'fart" as the Captain is so often saying.
"In space no one can hear you fart.
So let go and do not be afraid.
On earth, people may hear you.
But do not be afraid,
then you will have space
so no one can hear you again."

When I get a bad case of the pon'farts, there's never enough space between them for people not to hear it again. (-:< >:-)

I was responding to your post after Ariane had posted about having bird flu and her thinking that perhaps she wouldn't survive. The following post was yours where you say "One can only hope!". When I read that I winced and hence posted my message, in reply to yours, which said "Ouch!" basing this on the history of yours and Ariane's relationship that I have observed on these boards.

Oh! Well, that wasn't the case, as you could see I responded to the thread, and not to her post. Maybe I should have replied to the original post with a photo of Donald Duck lying in the gutter and the thread name "No one is immune from the bird flu" as a comment, but as it was posted while I was sleeping, and there already had been a lot of comments in the thread, I clicked the "Reply to the thread" link! That Ariane posted right before was not my business, and as I also has told her herself, I tend to ignore her posts when she becomes too weird! And that post was weird, you must admit! So please be carefull with your projections!

I'm sorry Fuzzy but I don't know anything at all about donald duck and I don't understand how you thought I did.

Because you answered my post here!

I thought you maybe aggreed with me, but I also see my post are minus rated, so somebody here apparently don't agree with me on my view on Donald Duck!

But if it wasn't my view on Donald Duck, you commented on, what was it then? I'm curious.

Jon Gisle's Donaldismen is a classic. I agree with you that it's very funny! Thanks for the list. :D

Prognatus, again thank you so much! I'll look into it. I took a short peek last night before I went to bed, and it seems that Don Rosa has continued Jon Gisle's work about the genealogy in Duckburg. I can't wait to see what he says about the other things Jon Gisle has worked up about religion, the theories of reproduction, the view on females, etc.

Yes, I love Jon Gisle's classifications with the latin names! :-D I had to make some up in English, as they in my book are different. E.g. Commercialism (donaldismus speculativus ugh'n'yuck) are in my book named as (donaldismus speculativus phyphasan), which you as Norwegian should be able to understand the meaning of! ;-)

But again, thanks so much, I'll definitely look into the Don Rosa stories and drawings. One's life as a fan of Donald Duck will never be the same after one becomes aware of the meaning of the rostilongitude quotient! ;-D
