Personal background

First I need to mention something very important ..

You use a WU reschedule tool (e.g. Fred's BoincRescheduler)?
Since the new Credit System 'CreditNew' you shouldn't longer use a reschedule tool for to send CPU WUs to GPU or GPU WUs to CPU (confirmed by SETI@home Director Dr. David P. Anderson). If you still do this it will disturb the correct calculation of the Credits of/for the results. Much less Credits will be granted for you, also for other members (wingmen*)!

I see sometimes in the tasks list of my machine that a few members (wingmen*) still use this tool.
I don't use longer this tool, because I don't want that my machine get less Credits granted - and the most important reason, I don't want negatively affect the Credit granting of other members (wingmen*), because this is not comradely. You should do the same like I.
[* wingmen : SETI@home send out at least two copies of one work unit - to two different members/PCs. If they calculated the work units, the project server compare both results if they match. And the lowest pending Credits of both results will be granted.]

You use an older version than BOINC V6.12.34?
You should use at least BOINC V6.12.34. If you use earlier versions, it could happen that you (also your wingmen!) don't get Credits for the work units (because of the new Credit System 'CreditNew').
Currently is V7.2.33 the recommended version. Available here.

Hello and Welcome!

You can find here informations for to optimize your PC for to get more performance/higher RAC.
Also a collection of abbreviations and smilies which are used often in forums and their meaning. Additional a few SETI@home specific abbreviations.
And a few informations about me.

My formerly nicks were "Philip J. Fry" and "Sutaru Tsureku" for BOINC.
Born '73. Currently single. Living in Germany. (By the way, Germany is UTC/GMT +01:00 in winter (MET) / +02:00 in summer (MEST).)
My hobbies are my car and my motorbike (like all men ), SETI@home, and the SETI@home forum (for to help other members).
Yes, SETI@home is a very big hobby of me. Which you will see easily because of my hardware equipment and the resulting Credits/RAC of it ..

(Wenn Dein Englisch nicht so gut sein sollte, komm doch zu uns in das Team, wir sprechen auch deutsch. Wir helfen gerne bei Fragen oder Problemen.)

AND of course, with optimized SETI@home/AstroPulse applications for more calculation speed!

You can get this applications from the optimizer team site.

Also have a look in this thread of the SETI@home NC subforum.
(You can let run SETI@home not only on officially operating systems, also on others.)

Somewhat below you will find a 'quick instruction' for to install the optimized applications on a Windows operating system.
(For other operating systems are also optimized applications available. Follow the upper mentioned URL to the SETI@home NC subforum.)

Here is the combined output of my PCs at my primary projects SETI@home, SETI@home Beta Test and my secondary projects MilkyWay@home, Einstein@Home, GPUGRID and Collatz Conjecture

I made this donate pictures (with the approval of the SETI@home admins). If you like you could use them also e.g. for your forum signature, profile or others.
But, please be so kind and download it and upload it to your webserver or file sharing service (for example: or, for to hold small my webserver traffic. Thanks!

I made/make additional a special donation to SETI@home:

~ 1,000.- € - 1st SETI PC - AMD Athlon™ 64 3200+ @ 2.0 GHz

1st SETI PC: ~ 160 W - (off)
2nd SETI PC: ~ 380 W - (off)
3rd SETI PC: ~ 700 W - (off)
4th SETI PC: ~ 250 W - (24/7) - ~ 621,- € (~ 821.- US$)* / year

.. for the electricity bill.

.. and I'm not a millionaire or earn much money.

Because of the current (Jan/2013) very high electricity cost (1 kWh = 0.2877 € (0.3803 US$)*) and my current low earnings - it's current not possible to let run more PCs.

Easy 'quick instruction' for to install optimized project applications:

Be aware! Optimized project applications are only for advanced users!

After installation of the optimized project applications, BOINC will not upgrade automatically the project applications if newer are available.
Of course, this will not happen every month, but you should look from time to time in the NC subforum and this thread and/or to the download site of the optimizer crew here if a newer Lunatics Installer with newer optimized project applications is available. If, then you need to upgrade again the optimized project applications manually.
Here you see the version numbers of the currently available stock/original project applications. If you see that a version number of an application in this overview is higher (for example maybe 6.04 for CPU or 6.11 for GPU) as your optimized project applications in your BOINC Manager (currently 6.03 for CPU, 6.08 6.09 or 6.10 (depend of which app_info.xml file entry) for GPU), then you need to look to the upper mentioned sites.
If you are uncertain how to install the optimized project applications and/or you have questions, feel free to post before in the NC subforum or the team forum of (you need to be a member of the team to see the private/hidden team forum).

SETI@home v7 is tested currently at SETI@home BETA and will be released after successful test here at SETI@home. So be warned that you need to upgrade your optimized applications in the near future.
I guess the optimizer crew will publish simultaneously a (new) Lunatics Installer V0.39 (?) then. Look out from time to time for the new installer

O.K., if you think you can do this - here we go..

Download CPU-Z for to look which extensions (SSE/SSE2/SSE3/SSSE3/SSE4.1) your CPU have. Keep in mind the highest extension for later.
[MMX, SSE (1, 2, 3, 3S, 4.1) mean: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1]

Download the Lunatics' Unified Installer (currently V0.38 *) for your operation system (Windows (XP/Vista/7) 32/64 bit, Windows 98).
(Also available on this site for download.)

[* only V0.38 have a suitable CUDA application for GTX4xx+ (Fermi) graphic cards included!]

I guess, I don't need to mention it, but sure is sure - exit/finish BOINC complete before the following steps.

After download, you execute the Lunatics' Unified Installer.

If your CPU have the following extensions, you could check (it depend which SETI@home project you would like to calculate, Enhanced (1st project) and maybe additional AstroPulse (2nd project)):

For AstroPulse is only a SSE optimized application available.

If your CPU have following extension, you should check for MultiBeam:

SSE - SSE (p3) [only for Intel Pentium III]
SSE2 - SSE2 [for AMD/Intel CPUs]
SSE3 - SSE3 (Intel) [only for Intel CPUs]
SSE3 - SSE3 (AMD) [only for AMD CPUs]
SSSE3 - SSSE3 (Intel) [only for Intel CPUs]
SSE4.1 - SSE4.1 (Intel) [only for Intel CPUs]

[The MultiBeam SSE4.1 application is normally only faster than the SSSE3 application, if/on Intel Core2 Duo E8xxx CPUs and the sytem RAM is very fast or O/C. For to be sure how it's on your system, you should make a (bench-)test which is faster, SSSE3 or SSE4.1 . On my Intel Core2 Duo E7600 @ 3.06 GHz with DDR2 800/5-5-5-18 system RAM the SSSE3 application is much faster than the SSE4.1 application, confirmed through bench-test.]

If you have a CUDA capable nVIDIA GPU you should check also the MultBeam CUDA application.

Lunatics Installer V0.40 have also ATI/AMD GPU project applications included (for at least HD2xxx series).

The Installer should find the correct SETI@home project folder.
If not, insert the correct path there.

Additional you should have installed the latest driver for your nVIDIA or ATI/AMD graphic card.

Additional hint:
If you have multiple grafic cards in your system, you shouldn't let run them in SLI_(nVIDIA) / CrossFire_(ATI/AMD) mode if they calculate SETI@home/Astropulse WUs, this would reduce the calculation speed.

This informations were interesting and helpful for you? Now your PC/s have much higher performance/RAC. If you like you could say 'Thank you', if you would join We would be happy about. is currently a small team, but all team started small, isn't it? Over the years I could develop/increase my knowledge about computer hard-/software and SETI@home. If you have questions, you are 'in good hands' in the team

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

You saw the starship?

What you think.. they aren't out there?

I support also this project in memory of my brother and also in his name.
He died young and too early. He will be missed always.
He was also interested in the astronomy science, about the universe, SETI and science fiction - (and everything around them all).
