How can the users not be revolting? There's no immediate alternative that's as good and has universal driver/hardware/software support as Windows. OS X requires new hardware that you pay through the nose for. And then you have to buy all your games/software again and hope they can run on this platform. Linux has too many distributions, not all of whom support all hardware and software that Windows supports. Android isn't mature enough yet on bigger devices. Chrome OS and other low volume OSes aren't supporting all games/software, mostly due to their low volume. So best sit with your hands in your hair, frothing at the mouth, yelling from the top of your lungs at Microsoft and then just sag, droop your shoulders and sit through it again. You know there's no alternative! Edit: and then, perhaps big gaming PCs are a thing of the past anyway. Especially with Shadow around the corner. (If you order Shadow's service, you get a small 7 Watt Linux client at your home which streams the games from their independent servers, which each contain: 16 CPU cores, 48GB of RAM and 4 performance grade GPUs, typically GTX 1080s or Quadro P5000s, running Redhat's KVM on Linux, with your client getting one dedicated GPU) |

That's the same problem I have with 'cloud' storage, and why I built my own cloud, on my home network, two(so far)NAS with 16 TB capacity(so far). I keep only the OS on the 250 MB SSD C: of each PC, with data being in 'my cloud'. Each PC also has a 3 or 4 TB D: where games and programs are located. If I lose my internet connection I can still wast enormous amounts of time gaming..... "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Oh, didn't I copy that? You get a Gigabit connection to their servers with the subscription....That would be a good reason to subscribe if they would provide me such a connection, even without playing, since I am stuck at 4/.3 Mbit/s DL/UL! ;-) |

You know there's no alternative! Truer words have not been spoken. No one wants to support Linus because there isn't one Linux, there are hundreds all just different enough that a team of distro tuners is needed for each. On top of it the users expect high performance software that requires constant patches for legal, HR and accounting rules changes to be free - just like the O/S, of course it has to talk seamlessly to the windows world as all the customers and suppliers are windows based and they have to convince every hardware vendor to write free drivers for every piece of equipment going back a decade. Sure you can find a good free word processor for Linux. I defy anyone to find a program that can calculate payroll tax deductions for Linux that is up to date and kept that way. (Uh, don't businesses have employees? - Bingo, that's why Linux is going to only be IOT software.) |

It came up with opentaxsolver instantly as the first result at the top of the page. I use GnuCash for my personal finances and it seems to be a pretty well fleshed out finance program that is targeted mainly at business use. That is not for payroll deductions, that is for individual tax returns and note it is the 2017 version. Payroll taxes are different in all 50 states, DC, PR and of course every foreign country, IRS and most states have already released the 2019 tables. As you should know it has to handle everything from FICA to Disability Insurance to Workers Compensation and even wage garnishments say for a child support order. Oh it is nice if it interfaces with your bio-metric time clocks. |

No that is their outgoing bandwidth to you, it does nothing for your home connection. Do I need a fast connection? The fastest connection I have available is 10Mbps and it has a very bad habit of playing yo-yo with my internet. |

Okay, I didn't check the claim, merely went by what Linus said in de video. He said it came with a gigabit connection. |

https://mspoweruser.com/tip-for-you-own-safety-you-should-never-check-for-updates-in-windows-10/, as before you know it, Microsoft will install beta updates of software, even if you have opted out of their Insider Program. |

Well, well, well... Who would believe it?... Has anyone had the temerity to inform Management and Marketing and the Bean Counters and blind Spreadsheet Wielders?... We asked, you answered: The truth about software reliability It's not just about quality Research results Whether it's systems-level platforms and tools or full-blown business applications, you want the software your organisation depends on to run reliably and predictably. Our recent Reg survey, however, confirmed what most probably knew from experience, or could guess from press headlines – that software-related failures are far from uncommon. Unsurprisingly, major system failures and/or incidents leading to loss of data were top of the list when it came to the potential for damage and disruption. What also came through, though, was how much people hate it when a piece of software inflicts a constant stream of minor issues... There is some very good comment in that article. So how have we got some parts of the IT world so very very badly wrong for the users and the IT support people alike? IT is what we allow it to be... So how have we got some parts of the IT world so very very badly wrong for the users and the IT support people alike? Users "demand" features and sales sees those a new profit centers. As we all know a "bug" is a "feature" as described by marketing. Lawyers have been able to craft licenses so as to absolve the coder from all responsibility for any disaster and make it a contract of adhesion. Isn't that contract provision the entire basis of FLOSS? |

So how have we got some parts of the IT world so very very badly wrong for the users and the IT support people alike? Good poke to push a confluence of confusion there... There is a world of difference between paying money for goods and services versus having and enjoying the freedom to use and modify and develop software. In the IT world, 'tis unbelievable that certain mega-corps seem to push a business model whereby their clients pay money to then have them forced/coerced/duped into signing up to somehow having purchased a big 'nothing'. Indeed further, the clients seem to resign themselves into signing themselves into restrictions and enslavement! And to pay yet more for that!! Who would believe it! And then there is the world of FLOSS whereby software is enshrined as a right to be used and developed and to be kept available for all and any use. See the GPL for example. No money to be paid, the software is kept available to be picked up and used. Can you imagine that! To enjoy the unfettered freedom to use and modify and develop software! Good sense should prevail despite the profiteering of lawyers and despicables who profit from perpetrating abuse... IT is indeed what we make it... All good festive 'fun'?... Oh no IT's not, oh yes it is! Ho Ho Ho... Microsoft flings untested Windows 10 updates to users! (Oh no it doesn't!) ... Sometimes it is hard not to feel sorry for Microsoft, as Windows corporate veep Michael Fortin kicked off a self-inflicted storm over the quality of Windows 10 updates... To me: That looks to be one hell of an unwieldy turgid unmaintainable corporate mess! Indeed what a pantomime! Ya take yer chances there with that one!!! Sing along now... Happy festivities all, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |
