I opened the cover of my Surface Tablet this morning to discover it already turned on and happily digesting some bit of M$ B$ that I probably don't want.............glad that's the only device I possess running W10. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

I opened the cover of my Surface Tablet this morning to discover it already turned on and happily digesting some bit of M$ B$ that I probably don't want.............glad that's the only device I possess running W10. I now have a Windows 10 machine (was pre-installed)... it's a (mostly) offline retro gaming system that doesn't have BOINC installed (I gotta have one that's just mine!) and is in suspend when I am not using it. I found it's actually quite easy to stop Windows 10's notorious updates: Click Start, type "serv" until Services appears. Open it. Find Windows Update. Right-click and stop the service. Right-click, Properties, change Startup Type to Disabled. Ta-frickin-da! No more updates. |

No more updates. Leaving you wide open for zero day exploits. I prefer just to block driver updates, and delay the others so I don't get them till any issues are sorted out. Grant Darwin NT |

Leaving you wide open for zero day exploits. Not likely to get them on my machine disconnected from all networks where the only things I install are purchased and months ago. :^p I can also always re-enable the service from time to time when it's my choice to install updates thankyouverymuch, ie when I am confident that my OS won't get trashed by a bad one. Here is a good article with plenty of options. There is even a utility to select which updates to install... what will they think of next! |

Trouble in Windows Update land: Windows Update KB4034664 is causing trouble on 2nd screen It seems, that Microsoft’s Update KB4034664 (and KB4034679) for Windows 7 and Windows Server is causing display issues with several applications on a second screen. I’ve seen issues with PDF viewer, Excel, Office 2013, JAVA and Irfanview. 2017-08 update for Windows 10 Anniversary Update ("1607") breaks WSUS We've discovered that (now listed as a known issue in the Windows 10 Update History) the most recent update to Windows 10 Anniversary Update (2017-08) causes machines that are connected to WSUS to fail to find subsequent updates, returning the error: There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x8024401c)The issue is called out as a Known Issue of "WSUS servers will exhibit increased CPU, memory, and network utilization when Windows Update clients perform their first scan after installing KB4034658 ("Microsoft is investigating this issue and will provide an update as soon as possible.") |

Trouble in Windows Update land: Remember the problem with Windows Update on Vista & Win7 taking forever (if at all) to find updates? It's now made it to Win10. Grant Darwin NT |

Trouble in Windows Update land:A fix is available now although only available via the Microsoft Update Catalog. Oh, and on my system it needed three reboots to install. |

A fix is available now although only available via the Microsoft Update Catalog. In the mean time the fix has been revoked and has mysteriously returned again, just with a new date on the package. Perhaps that the triple reboot was something they didn't like. |

In short. Windows 10 Creator update - install or refuse by all means possible? In short, not just no, but hell no. LOL. Still XP here on the crunchers and 7 on the daily driver, "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

To be more precise: I'm asking about Creator update, not about to install Win10 or not. Netbook came already with it and I have no intention to replace whole OS. SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

In short. Windows 10 Creator update - install or refuse by all means possible? I've had no issues with the Creators Update other than it clobbering my video driver- it remained un-changed, but I had to re-install it to get OpenCL to work again. After the Creator's Update there was another update, that resulted in Windows Update taking ages to work (like with WIn7 etc). After it (eventually) updated, that Windows Update issue appears to have resolved itself. Grant Darwin NT |

I have no problems with Creators Update both in SETI CPU and SETI GPU. But I have problems in Einstein@home GPUs, even if I have installed the 385.41 nVidia driver, and also in LHC@home save SixTrack, which does not use VirtualBox. Tullio |

Grant - Do you have your system set up so that it does not update hardware device drivers? I have mine set to "NO" I've never had a problem with my NVidia drivers with that turned off. BTW, it will be here on the 17th with more bloatware then before. I wish M$S would allow desktop users who have Win 10 Pro installed to deselect 90% of the crap we don't use. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

It takes a little time and manual work, but you can get rid of a lot of crapware by referring to Black Viper's windows fix-it site. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

To be more precise: I'm asking about Creator update, not about to install Win10 or not. Netbook came already with it and I have no intention to replace whole OS. I went with the automatic update once I came up in the queue. No real problems at all. Like the new extended hours of system availability - 18 hours - that you keep the update process' hands of my cotton picken' machine. I have no use for the "creators" functionality. It is just a cruncher. I would say it is safe to let it update. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
