He has only made 1 post since 1999, I wouldn't take it too seriously!

Just noting in passing that this is the News thread about the release of a SETI application that will run on his Nvidia 600 card.....

What is here the problem?

'Midrange enthusiast card' = price/performance market = 'rush to market' = 'got the voltage wrong & clocks too high---> Greedy manufacturers'

[Throw in some overeager overclockers, and the odd bad driver & system, and there you have it, 'perfect storm']

Having said that, my eVGA SC 560ti has performed flawlessly since out of the box.
6.10 is indeed very outdated & had more than its fair share of issues, but even the much improved x41zc won't fix a broken computer.

As for the guy selling his hardware off cheap, let me know how much ;)

Message 1374314 - Posted: 31 May 2013, 14:51:30 UTC

I'm new here and don't have any complaints - only important questions. I am running the latest SETI@home (before version 7) on BOINC v 7.0.64 with no problems. Will someone please tell me the exact steps of how the new version 7 will update? Will it download the update in the background without asking my permission? Will the current program automatically update and require no interaction from me (such as clicking through an installation interface)? Will the new version automatically update itself after a reboot of my computer, or what? Is there a page where I can just click and download it and install it myself? Thanks to those who work so hard to create and update SETI@home software.

For me it just appeared itself, so just wait. And when will you post that SETI 7 information you promised? I'm just refreshing forums to see if it will appear. Doing it whole day now actually :D

Yes, it will download the update in the background when new 7 work units are assigned to Your host.

JR Love, for most users it will be an automatic process (and you fall into this camp). The new apps will be downloaded, and you just sit back and watch the show.
For some users there may be a glitch when their anti-virus software gets a bit over excited, the team is aware of this and is trying to work out a resolution, but the warning message can be ignored.
Its only the real nerds who are having problems, trying to guess how to do things that haven't been made public. The reason for some information not being made public is to try to have as smooth a transition as possible, and some folks just love digging holes and building piles...

Another note to JR Love:
Welcome to the project! Check your Seti@Home prefernces (from your account page) and make sure the v7 application is ticked on.

I was expecting that the new SETI@home v7 WUs will be bigger/longer than the old SETI@home Enhanced WUs, but so far I can't notice such thing. Is there, somewhere, where I could read about the general improvements in the new application ... maybe the beta forum?

You're running Astropulse tasks --for which there is no v7 application-- and other than that you run the anonymous platform. So probably an optimized application, most probably the old v6.

When you run anonymous platform YOU have to do the application updates, download them by hand, add their names and what they do to the app_info.xml file. This isn't done automatically. The v7 applications are only downloaded automatically when you use the default setting, no anonymous platform.

Remove your app_info, Restart Boinc and reset the project, the project will send you the new applications.

The auto correlation increases the sensitivity for weak signals by how many db? Has this been posted?

I am aware of that ... and YOU are right - I still run the old optimised apps - both MB and Astropulse. I've decided to switch to SETI@home v7 the following week. My question here is just out of curiosity, in case somebody knows where I could find the info! :)

OK question. Which will give more credit stock V7 or Lunatics enhanced V6? And which is more use to Seti?

Neither is of particular use to SETI - SETI isn't, I profoundly hope, primarily concerned with its own survival.

v7 should be of more interest to the world and humankind in general, because the more detailed search should increase the chances of answering the age-old question: are we alone?

And the question of credit is so un-newsworthy that I'm going to leave it un-answered: largely because I don't know the answer, and I don't even want to know the answer.

The answer is: It also has support for other certain graphics cards brand's models (i.e. ATI) I like Canadians.. they taste like chicken LOL ... but - like he said... these code writers are so awesome! I'm just tickled pink that I can actually take part. My question will remain unanswered... "Where is the outer edge of the universe?"
