Yes it is :-) Oh and Janice, tell your neighbour from me he should be very thankful I don't live next door to him, he would regret it. Grey squirrels are regarded as a pest but there are humane ways of trapping and culling them which I guess he is not following.

humane and culling in the same sentence? ;)

Grey squirrels are not native to Britain and are outcompeting the red ones apart from a few select places like Formby and the Scottish Border - I don't know which species is native to the US.

The Eastern grey squirrel is native to the east and the midwest of the US.

We get as many as 5 or rarely 6 grey squirrels at our feeder. They are a bit hard on the feeders, so we just spead food all over the ground. They love the peanuts also.

Steve

Edit: There are many chipmunks also. They have holes all over the yard.

Not a good foxhole among them I'd bet...

We rarely get to see chipmunks or squirrels over here. Or you must go into the woods. They never come close to a human though.

Yes many regard the Gray squirrels as pests. They are I believe native to the western USA, and genetics are almost identical to the reds if I remember correctly. When orchards were planted here they did come out of the oak trees to see what these lovely new nuts were, and as the orchards were removed and housing went in they just kind of stayed. My neighbor does use live traps and
says he relocates them. What I want to say should not be repeated.

Along the property lines are black walnut trees, and in front are ponderosa pines.. which the squirrels do seem to find the nuts of delicious as well(Native diet). The only real problem they can cause is if they get into someones attic, and most homes are built to resist that.

Around our patch we see quite a few greys, as the native reds have long been out-competed. Scotland is the place to find reds now ...

This Red Squirrel was in the papers the other day:

Drained squirrel becomes stuck in man-hole cover

Edit: But apparently died a few hours later, likely from stress.

No squirrels here, the closest would be Barstow CA, I've seen them near Stater Brothers Market back in the early spring, out here I've got a cat who likes to chew on plastic, like: antennas, wires & cables, so I have to protect them somehow, about the only ones I don't protect are those that Grace doesn't seem to want to chew on, are those nearest Her automated litterbox, go figure...

There are schemes to re-introduce our native reds which are to be applauded.

Best leave it at squirrels.

There are two different Grey Squirrel species in the US. One along the West Coast, and the other in the Eastern third of the US.

Neither of them reaches the Rocky Mountains though. Blocked by the Great Plains on one side and the intermountain desert on the other.

I've never even gave any thought about different breeds of squirrels. Here in the Northeast US we have one breed of squirrel, the Eastern Gray. It's all I've ever seen in person my whole life, and I've seen them every non-winter day of my life.

(Speaking of Grays, it's time to shave my beard again.)

Hello Raccoon Fanciers

Marcel, Donna and Maggie came out mid-day to play... and play... and play... and play... and play some more. Around noon they presumably took a little raccoon nap under the deck, then they came out around 2pm and played some more.

Caution: This link contains explicit video footage of raccoon babies "wrasslin' & rollin' & bitin' & chewin' " on one another, and altogether having a grand time. They play just like kittens, except that kittens don't tear up my ground cover that much. Eric has accused me of planting "raccoon nip" in our backyard.

Enjoy!
