I sort of knew this, but just had a very graphic reminder.

I try to blow out the fan air passages on my laptop and my desktop at least once a month. My laptop was getting warm to the touch, so I opened SpeedFan and gave it a good puff. Raised a major cloud of dust, to my surprise.

CPU temps went from 74C to 58C within about 3 minutes, without any changes in running tasks. Now on to the desktop.

Where did you think the matted material they use to make "Snuggies (TM)" came from??

That's right, CPU fan build-up.

Most of my OC'd rigs are so reliable now, that I know when they crash, it's time to take 'the shit outta the fans'. IE.......the kitty fur.

How timely. My son's PC graphics card was starting to go on the fritz so we pulled it out and cracked it open last night. It's a year old ATI Radeon 4870 X2 and was cooking itself essentially.

Two heat sinks and the first was completely clogged with fuzzies.

We are looking for some GPU cooling solution better than what's provided. It will only clog up yet again. COOLIT has something interesting in the OMNI but that won't be available until May at the earliest they say.

Any suggestions on GPU cooling, please feel free to pass them along! In the meantime, heed Bill's warning!

Regards,

Accelero Xtreme 4870 X2

I use the Accelero S1 R.2 on 2 of my HD 4850s, brought average under full load from mid-70s to 50 - 52 on average, sometimes less...

Good dust filters for Your PCs case will help and are a start, I use filters from performance-pcs.com And right now the intake for the H50 has one for a 120mm filter on there, It's washable and a really fine white mesh.

Many years ago back in the DOS days I had a computer running hot. I took the cover off and it cooled down quickly. I left it off. I have left them off ever since. Only the CPU fan is actually cooling something. The case fan is removing heated air from the case. No cover == no temperature increase. I have never had a problem because of it.

I have 2 computers running 24/7. The main rig, my one is upstairs in the living room (it's an upside down house. Living room, kitchen upstairs - bedroom and bathroom downstairs...) has to have the filters cleaned at least once a month, with the insides still needing to be cleaned every few months.

The downstairs one, where it is much cooler anyway, has to have the filters cleaned every 2-3 months and only has the insides done about every 6 months.

Filters don't remove the need for cleaning - they just stop most of the dirt getting inside.

I'm a little OCD about cleaning them, especially because it gets so hot upstairs, and the rig shuts down if the temp gets too high in the summer - intensely irritating... :-(

Hi, yep, it's cleaning time, all 3 QUAD's are getting too
hot, did reduce the OC, so now it's cleaning or Under-Clocking . . .

I had to stop using my laptop , though I kept cleaning the dust bunnies, the fans in a laptop do not like working flat out 24/7. Been getting dirty looks in the Reading room at the National Archives as the fan bearings are worn and a tad noisy.

I clean my PCs with a Vacuum Cleaner monthly. The keyboards every 6 months in the dishwasher. Never had a problem.

You're putting an electronic (and highly sensitive to water) device into the dishwasher? Why not put the entire computer in the dishwasher?

I dare not think about how your keyboards look inside. And that they should work after having gone through the dishwasher, is beyond me.

Yeah, I am going to have to clean soon too. Took a peek inside earlier and I'm seeing a few dust-bunnies lurking around the vents. :P

I just did clean My 120mm dust filter with warm soapy water(dried It off 1st of course and slapped It back on the case with the built in magnet), The PC's 10C cooler now too, the Keyboard, I have 3 keyboards now, I may try that on the beige BTC AT Keyboard of course and then the black MS keyboard, The silver HP media center keyboard isn't dirty yet. As the MS and the BTC could stand a good cleaning(they look like Solomon Grungy;)), I might also try the optical mouse too, But then I have a few of them too. :D

Oh and I investigated the site Seal Shield and they do indeed sell Dishwasher safe keyboards: http://www.sealshield.com/

I am blowing the dust out of my system every 6 months or so and that seems to work well. I just blew it out yesterday and while it wasn't to bad, it did slow the fans down from around 800 rpms to 750 rpms.
As for cleaning keyboards, use air to get the dust bunnies out then take a moist but not soaking towel and lay it over the top of the keys for about half an hour. You will find the gunk will wipe off with much less effort.

Sten-Arne, i dont care how it looks inside and i dont know because i never opend it. It works fine. The secret of course is not to plug it in directly after washing. Instead put it upright in warm place, like the back of a computer for one day, turn it the other day upside down. Let it there another day. Plug it
in and - yeah, it works. And if the keyboard fails one day,i buy a new one for 15 Euro.

Another secret - but dont tell anyone - i washed my coffeemachine the same way. The point is, let the things dry after washing and be sure that they are dry before using them. The same applies to a whole computer but honestly i never thought of that. I never would do this with a Notebook!

Next week i am going to dishwash my keyboard again. And i will open it afterwards and take some pictures.

"Operation dishwasher" ist starting soon ;-)
