Some Nostalgia may ease the pain--or make it worse.

Ya want some real nostalgia?

I passed my driving test and got my first car in 1963. I could drive into a garage with a £1 note, buy 4 gallons of Shell Mex at 4s 10d a gallon (24p) plus 4 shots of Red-Ex at 1d each, and still drive back out with change in my pocket.

OK, beat that!

I remember the "gas wars" when I was very young...$.15 - $.17 a gallon. Oh, those were the days.

. . . i've got some photos (somewhere on an old drive - have to get them off someday) of a Gas Station - in Los Angeles that was called 'Rocket Fuel' - and the price (on the sign was .25 cents a gallon) - the station was off Alvarado Street - near Sunset Blvd ;)))

Oh gawd. You're going to make me say it. 1950s.

I remember gas wars in the 1960s in Oklahoma.

What type of offers did they promote?

Low prices, in the under $0.20 range as stated previously. Free giveaways for glassware, flatware, plates, etc.

Actually, it was ESSO, but Shell could have bought them, I don't know.

And up goes the petrol/gas price in New Zealand... (all prices stated have the .9 cent rounded up...

Yesterday prices rose for unleaded 91 to NZ$2.07 per litre (US$5.90 per gallon) from NZ$2.01 (US$5.73 per gallon)

And it doesn't show any hope of stopping....

I thought it was Exxon.... "Put a tiger in your tank."

EDIT: I should have read further. It's already answered.

It looks like the Esso/Exxon put a Tiger in your tank of the 1970s played out worldwide. I can remember the same ads in the UK

Hauliers converge on Edinburgh in fuel price protest

Looks like more people who simply have no clue about fuel prices.

You know, because drivin' around crabbin' and protestin' about how high the prices are somehow lowers prices.

Tell me again about that free health care?
Cordially,
Rush

Maybe we should rename this thread:

'Something to gloat about - What's the price of road fuel where you are?'... ;)

(Yea, it really is that obvious.)
It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . .

Not really Jeffrey.

It is a grousing thread and a point to carp about the price of the fuel you use.

We are in one of the most fuel costly areas due to a gready Treasury, which imposes 2 Taxes - Road Fuel Duty and Sales Tax on that tax (and the other components that make up the price we pay at the punps).

It is not showing off, but more painful to us than to those driving in the US. We currently pay nearly £10.00 a US gallon for our fuel.
