Message 495501 - Posted: 1 Jan 2007, 13:38:29 UTC

One thing I've noticed between the various computers I use is that the older ones seem to be able to upload pretty quickly; its the multicore/64 bit systems that appear to be having problems (at least in my case) where it can take several tries just to get new work to download (which can be a royal pain with the multicore systems waiting for work to download for each core).

With the Holiday weekend and Christmas being on a Monday I could see several of them taking extended leave from classes and enjoying a longer than usual break to relax before their finals start shortly after they return. I fear once they get the uploads fixed there's gonna be a flood of completed units waiting to get uploaded. By that time I'll have around 50 or so to upload, just hope nothing gets lost in the flood of uploads.

If the network activity was then resuspended the /Messages Tab/ suggests this is being ignored still! This is from the reports in both the /Messages tab/ and the activity in the /Transfers Tab/ where the "trying to U/L WUs" just carry on with their countdown and retry!

Anyone else getting this problem, when I am trying to ease my demand on the server

Might be worth "firewalling" the application/client to avoid trashing units?

On mine, it counts down and then states "Suspended" so appears to work.

Steve.

It would appear that 7 attempts are made before the "suspended" mark appears and te futile attempt to reach the server ceases.

During this refusal by the U/L servers (or whatever) to accept returned results, the concensus seems to agree to "suspend network activity" using the drop downs in BOIN C Manager!

Done this and the /Messages Tab/ seems to report the command is being ignored.

To test this I shutdown BOINC, with the "suspend network activity" ON, and restarted after about 15 seconds, to cover residuals. The /Messages Tab/ reported the network activity resumed immediately after WU crunching was resumed.

If the network activity was then resuspended the /Messages Tab/ suggests this is being ignored still! This is from the reports in both the /Messages tab/ and the activity in the /Transfers Tab/ where the "trying to U/L WUs" just carry on with their countdown and retry!

I'm seeing the same thing on a Conroe running Crunch3r's 5.7.5.32 32bit client, but not on the standard 5.4.11 client.

I agree, but sometimes it counts down more than once. I saw up to 7 repeats about an hour ago, but fewer since then.

As downloads are also a problem, I have also stopped New Tasks under the Projects Tab

I cannot get BOINC Manager to suspend network activity, but achieved the same using ZA software firewall as you suggested.

This will lessen my demands on the servers!

Assimilators have nothing to do with up/downloading. The only thing that has to be up for you to upload work is the "upload/download server (kryten)". To download requires the feeder and the scheduler as well.

My bet is on an NFS problem. They have problems every once in a while with NFS mounts going stale. No big deal to fix but very noticable when it fails.

I think You may have hit the nail on the head, So as others have said Happy New Year!

I think we are All having this problem. I found this interesting quote in the technical news section. Naughty of them me thinks!!

..........."A configuration change made for testing the new plumbing tickled a creeping problem where long, cryptic symbolic link chains break unexpectedly. In other words: oops"................

This incident happened a while back but I wonder if something similar is involved this time?

And a Happy New Year to all.

Doubt it they haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary regular tuesday outage for maintaince no real new equipment has been brought into the main pipe that I can think of lately (that is since they changed out the science database as I remember)...I tend to belive that it's the NFS issue that was stated earlier since that perticular issue that you were refering to in your post was only a minor blip back in november as I remember. The last time that the NFS mounts went south it caused several days of down time...it also happened on a weekend as I remember which greatly effected their reaction time to the issue.

Very few green lights on the server status page now...Most are red...and then a few orange...which means someone is on the case and trying to fix things.

So much for BOINC's 10 days worth in the cache...I'll last a little over another 36 hours at my current rate of consumption...if nothing else changes...oh well not much to do about it but wait and watch.

As Dan mentioned, there seems to be someone on site if the server status is to be believed (as at 17.02 UTC). If it is not sorted, then your cache should carry you over. The staffers should be back as normal around 17.00 UTC on Tuesday.

it only lasts a short time...and just remember it's the same amount that you would have gotten without the server issues just comes as one realy big spike
