I think seeing what machines other participants have is 1/2 the fun of SETI. comments?

And the other 1/2 is Hiding them from people like you ... ;)

man, I've heard of people hiding porn from their parents but how you use your CPU cycles! Time to move out of the basement! Being curious about what OS ppl run, and their computer hardware isn't comparable to inquiring about what type of car you drive. I guess someone could stalk you by knowing you have a ford pinto, but knowing that you run windoze ME on your dad's packard bell doesn't do much for me. I think alot of you have illusions of grandeur and or unmerited paranoia!

Such a:

N O O B !

Just get OVER it. People are gonna hide their computers, others aren't [probably because they don't know how to]. Why does it bother you so much? Why do you care what computers I have attached? I don't care about yours. Let's see, have you figured out how to hide yours yet....?

yeah I know how to hide my computers. Are you serious? This has been really entertaining guys. Thanks!

You asked a question about hiding computers, because as you said it yourself, it is funny for you to see other peoples computers, which I answered kindly in a post above. You gave this answer to me over in Numbers, where I pointed out that you post redundant and I linked to my answer above.

I think you have a very rude attitude to people here, also judged from your response to the two above posts! Who do you think you are? You come here and ask questions and demand answers, and when people give you answers after their own decisions, you start to insult them!

This is a very bad attitude you show here!

And, BTW, please meet Mr. Ignore!

demand answers? hmph. okay. I've been laughing the entire time. You started the snappy responses with your 1st post, claiming I had made redundant posts, when in reality you were behind the curve. Either way, thanks for the laughs, happy crunching, and really lighten up! haha

94.6% of the users here know where to get information when they run into a problem.
98.7% of the users here aren't snoopy.
99.9% of the users here do not post the same topic to multiple boards. The same topic does get posted to multiple boards, but by different users.

"Behind the curve"? I think not. When I got here tonight I saw the same thread, started by you, on 2 different boards. You started the one in the Café at 0:19 UTC. 3 minutes later, at 0:22 UTC, you again posted it on the NC board.

You should check your facts before making accusations.

People are gonna hide their computers, others aren't [probably because they don't know how to].

I'll bet more people simply don't care. There is no security risk, so why bother?

I think you're both partly right ;) Besides, it's not all that difficult to hide ones computers, as the setting is right there in the project specific preferences (AFAIR it even shows up in the creation process).

The thing about hiding/not hiding was discused on another board btw, and there most of us agreed that most made their choice (either hiding or not) without actually knowing what would be visible to other (like computer name and IP that doesn't show) or what security questions there might be, as no info is given on the pages about this. Many don't even know what it means when they first sign up.

Although I do respect the choice to hide ones computers, it can at times be a bit annoying when trying to figure out possible problems or even from a statistical view.

As I said in the second post of this thread:
Security has always been a concern for many SETI crunchers both at Classic and here under BOINC. I understand your curiosity, but I'm not willing to reveal anything more than is necessary to efficiently run the project. In all that I have read about the security of this project, no one has ever said that showing my computer(s) is a security risk, but why should I chance it? Sorry to be blunt, but I don't think your curiosity is a good reason to take even a very small risk.

If I ask for technical help, and people responding want to know what computers I have (so far, no one has asked me), I would temporarily un-hide them. But most problems discussed on the Numbers or Q&A pages have little to do with hardware. Take a look--the software or policy questions are most common.

Once again, Tom, we're thinking alike, except that I will just add the appropriate information to the post instead of un-hiding my computers. >:-)

Just curious, what motivates those of you that hide your computers? You do realize your IP is only visible to YOU when you're logged in, and SETI@HOME already has your IP, not to mention if you have a router it would only be your internal IP anyway!! I think seeing what machines other participants have is 1/2 the fun of SETI. comments?

Um, I'm not really sure why I decided to hide my computer. I guess it's just another one of those BOINC settings that I play around with from time to time.

I wouldn't say that seeing other participants puters is half the fun though.
