Message 109109 - Posted: 8 May 2005, 22:01:42 UTC

I've been a contributer for years. I've just switched to BOINC about five days ago because I had to re-install XP on my main machine.

So far, I've completed two work units. Not because my PC can't do it but because it can't download or upload to your servers. They've been down, they've had peering problems with Europe, for goodness sake, ditch Cogent and get a decent company to supply your connectivity. It might cost slightly more but HEY, It'll work!

I know you guys are strapped for cash, but really, this sucks big time.

Hi Tim, I know it sucks when this stuff happens, But again that's what creating BOINC is all about, Multiple Projects..Less Down time..

I have suggested before and again, Go to Einstein@home and sign up that way you'll be crunching and somewhat happy...You've been around for a long time in classic and like the rest of us we where spoiled by the mundane....

Keep on Crunching and get that 2nd project Going!

Einstein@home Has a great Screen saver too!

Less down time? Are you daft? I never experienced trouble like this with SETI on the original system, largely it just worked! And thanks for the suggestion but I don't want to contribute to other projects.

I repeat - Ditch Cogent, that appears to be the problem!

actually COGENT serves both SETI BOINC and CLASSIC...so CLASSIC has been down the same amount of time BOINC has been...and is suffering from the same crush of traffic...this is not a problem specific to BOINC.

now if we all would kick in some money every month for the privilege of being a part of this project...then maybe they could afford to spend more on connectivity service...keep in mind...this is not a federal program...so there are not millions of dollars to spend.

Isn't the whole Berkeley Campus connected through Cogent as well? Just let it go down often enough and the students and professors will complain enough for them to change.

How's this for a bubble popper? When Cogent has SETI/BOINC down, it also has SETI/Classic down. Hmmmm.... Do you remember, a few years back, when Classic was down because of lack of connection to the Internet? Was it SETI's fault? Nope, someone decided they needed the cableing more than SETI.

From what I have gathered, the Cogent connection is a "donation" to SETI/Berkeley. That means we all, including SETI, suffer when Cogent goes down. If you can't/won't participate in other projects, than you're the one suffering, not the rest of us.

Message 109133 - Posted: 8 May 2005, 22:48:27 UTC - in response to Message 109118.

Problems with classic were not evident here over many years on different machines in different locations with different connectivity. Also any problems with classic were not obvious right up until the swap to BOINC. Maybe this is because of the way that the software works - classic worked well, quite possibly because of it's simplicity, or maybe I've just had a particularly bad case of "timing".

And of course I understand that funding is an issue. Surely that is part of the reason that people like me all over the world - and not limited to the USA where "Federal funding" is not forthcoming - are willing to help out? IME it's a good idea not to go for the lowest bid without quality guarantees.

But point taken, I'll take this to "number crunching" - in the morning, it's nearly midnight here.

Then they should actively seek other sponsors ...

If France Telecom disable peering something must be seriously wrong.

Don't you just hate it when people start their rant threads in the Cafe?

It must be bad timing that makes you notice things like this more as just last fall all h*ll broke loose at classic - interestingly a connectivety problem that didn't affect boinc, only classic - and that outage was afair more than 24 hours long - apparently you missed that one, but many didn't - oddly a huge number of crunchers blamed the berkeley guys... Seems they can't do anything right in some peoples eyes..
