Or just use the builtin RAM tester in the DDR4 RAM Calculator. Karhu is a good one also but costs money for the fully enabled application. https://www.overclock.net/forum/13-amd-general/1640919-new-dram-calculator-ryzena-1-7-0-overclocking-dram-am4-membench-0-8-dram-bench.html https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ryzen-dram-calculator/ https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/download-ryzen-dram-calculator.html HOW USE MEMTEST in MEMbench Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Thanks. Although the program is a bit unintuitive to use (it doesn't want to use values above 3200MB for some reason), I dropped back to 1024MB and hit an error in the first 3%. Rebooted into the BIOS and found that XMP was turned off. Turned it back on, back into Windows, memtest. It now came to 5%, but yet again an error. SO I suspect I have one or more bad DIMMs. Have emailed the store already, will await their answer. |

It should. Lots of people reporting that it tests 64GB of memory just fine. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Well it doesn't. At the start it'll tell you that because of Windows limitations you can only input max 2GB to 3.5GB values, although you can run multiple instances at a time. Try to input 3500 and it won't run. 3400 either. |

Was that because of wanting to run 64 bit OS' in the future? Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Oh, I forgot you are running Windows 7 32 bit.Where have I said that? I don't think I ever owned a 32bit Windows 7. All my Ultimates were 64bit, so they can be easily transferred now to Windows 10 Pro x64. Which is what I am using. I'll make a screen shot later on, have to now go test the individual DIMMs anyway. Here you go: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qoc7dbyG3q9dWXgF7 That's when I fill in 3400. The plot thickens. Tested both DIMMS individually in the first slot closest to the CPU, both gave errors. Then on a whim put one in the second slot... no errors. Also not with the second DIMM. So broken motherboard then. My luck. I knew I didn't like Gigabyte for a reason. The plot has jumped out the window. Tested one DIMM in all slots, no errors. Testing the other DIMM in all slots... no errors. What? How? |

Maybe the MB is "dimm" witted? Sorry. The hardest thing to find is intermittent faults. And it sounds like you have that. It still sounds like a MB issue. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

I agree, but have now exchanged the memory. Two new DIMMs in the slots. The store normally sends them away for testing, but they know me and changed them over without problems. They also think it's a motherboard problem. But let's just first see for 24 hours what this does. Not jumping to conclusions. |

I have never used that memtest application before and I have never seen the error message mentioned in the forum thread. You are putting the two RAM sticks in the proper slots aren't you? Refer to your manual. Normally you use DIMM_B2 and DIMM_A2 slots for two sticks. To get the memory timing signals correct, the DIMMS need to be a certain distance from the cpu and of equal electrical lengths. The motherboard manual (if you can call this rag that) says: "The four memory sockets are divided into two channels and each channel has two memory sockets as follows: ; Channel A: DDR4_2, DDR4_4 ; Channel B: DDR4_1, DDR4_3" And then a schematic that shows you can either slot in 1 and 3, or 2 and 4 for dual channel . I asked about that in the store and they also said best try 2 and 4 first. I'm doing that, but the system still isn't really stable. Had several Firefox crashes already. Luckily Cortana came back, yesterday I had the search open to a black screen all day, so I had to start everything via Run. The Security and Maintenance Reliability Monitor is full of red circles with white X's. Even the Ryzen DRAM Calculator managed to hang itself and had to be forcefully closed. The hiccup, where the mouse would pauses for several seconds seems to be gone though. Perhaps that the BIOS update did that. And luckily I remember that after a BIOS update everything is reset to defaults... which on this motherboard means that the boot option goes back to legacy, which is a tiny little problem if you setup Windows to use UEFI. By the way, this system - the Ryzen 2700X has just got 16GB RAM. I also forgot about that earlier. But then today I was doing 6 things (?) at once. I question myself as I can't remember. Just as again I couldn't remember where I parked my car, and two hours after I got home my parking app notified me it was still on. So uh, that kind of day. ;-) |

The normal convention is put the sticks into the 2nd and 4th slots furthest from the socket. Convention is also to color code the slots with pairs designated with white, grey, brown or black colors. So two sticks into the grey slots for example. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Gigabyte hasn't gotten that memo. The only colours on the motherboard are in the RGB in the logo, the rest is 50 shades of black. |

I have steered well clear of Gigabyte boards since a 870A-UD3 board that left a bad taste. Never revisited the brand. Seems they haven't learned much in 15 years. I am beginning to think that at minimum the motherboard is bad and possibly the memory. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Not the memory, as I got a completely new pair at the store today. It's unlikely Corsair managed to get 2 pair of bad memory to the same small shop. ;-) I'm thinking it's the motherboard as well and I don't like Gigabyte either. Them and MSI are my bane. Asrock is my brand of choice. |

I have several older generation MSI boards on the shelf that seem to work well. Have a X370 MSI board that works well. I have the best experience with the ASUS boards as well as my one Asrock X399 board. No issues with those boards. However I cannot say the same for ASUS RMA process. They have a very poor Tech Support and RMA organization. Only one failure event with an ASUS board out of 6 different boards that was bad. Thankfully nothing much ever goes wrong with the boards. Very solid. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Greetings, $4K for a Threadripper CPU???? Wam, bam, NO thank you ma'am! I'll stick with Intel. They don't have anything at that price, at least not that I have seen. Greetings, That $4000 Threadripper CPU outperforms 2x $10,000 Intel Xeon CPUs (Xeon Platinum 8180) Not sure where you get the idea that Intel doesn’t have anything at that price. The Xeon W-3175X (a $3000 CPU) gets absolutely destroyed by this Threadripper. The CPU is expensive. But just because you don’t have a use for it, doesn’t mean that others don’t. If you have a need for the power this CPU offers and can deal with the limitations on memory and PCIe lanes, then this is the best bang for buck CPU on the market. Greetings, Hi Ian, I did say "at least not that I have seen." AMD is just trying to do as Intel has done for decades. Overprice their CPUs. Is the 3175X a 7nm chip? Linus testing the 64 core TR 3990X vs 32 core 3970X: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LaKH5etJoE Hi Jord, I do not watch Linus Tech Tips videos anymore. I saw him as a guest on a different channel I watch and he pretty much commandeered the video. The channel owner(s) hardly got a word in edge wise because Linus would not shut up. I'm only glad I never subscribed to his channel. :) I will attempt to make this my last post in this thread since I am not an AMD fanboy or TR fanboy. ;) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS?
