Time to UPGRADE!

Microsoft issues emergency patch for Explorer browser

... emergency update for its Internet Explorer browser to fix a bug that cyber-thieves are known to be exploiting... booby-trapped webpages harbouring malicious code that infects visitors.

In a description of the problem, Microsoft said versions nine to 11 were vulnerable... the severity of the problem and the fact that it was being abused led it to issue a rare emergency patch.

Statistics suggest just over 8% of people are still using Internet Explorer...

Time to move onwards to something better?

Or still trapped or entrapped??...

Hi Phil,

The only time I have ever used Internet Exploder was to download Firefox and make Firefox my default browser. :)

Have a great day! :)

My comment was as much that the "8%" looks scarily high for such old stuff... (Although is that 8% of some small dying out group?...)

Also, still, years later, how is it that on some systems, a mere website page can pawn a computer by merely displaying the web page?!!!...

There are precisely two "web sites" that I use IE on. One is a security camera that the hardware would need to be replaced to run something newer, the other is a printer that the MFG hasn't got it to play nice with Firefox, chrome, opera or the service people don't know there is a flash for it.

Hmmmm.. Call me crazy, but Windows 11 could run on Linux
With Microsoft embracing Linux ever more tightly, might it do the heretofore unthinkable and dump the NT kernel in favor of the Linux kernel? No, I’m not ready for the funny farm. As it prepares Windows 11, Microsoft has been laying the groundwork for such a radical release.

Thanks for that... Very interesting...

To quote further:

... Since then, Microsoft has been drawing Windows and Linux ever closer. With WSL 2, Microsoft started including within Windows Insiders releases its own in-house, custom-built Linux kernel to underpin WSL. In other words, Microsoft is now shipping its own Linux kernel, which works hand-in-glove with Windows...

... Will Microsoft release a Linux-based Windows? I don’t know. What I do know is that it has been taking the necessary steps to make such a desktop operating system possible. And unlike with the Microsoft of old, surprises do happen.

Really, has Linus "won"? Or is this Steve Ballmer's "cancer" in the here and now?

Is there a gotcha to windows 10? Just installed it on my desktop here (windows 7 pro to 10 pro) and it seems sort of decent? Cortona or whatever she hides under as a name has hit the trash already. It's processing units currently, seems to be about 20 or so minutes longer compared to Windows 7 per unit.

Microsoft let me have 10 for free since the system came with 8.1 pro (product key buried in the bios). Thought i'd try it on a 7200 RPM western digital black 1tb drive and see how the performance is. My mothers laptop got a SSD from my parts bin since a 5400 rpm is murder with 8.1 or 10. Seems a little laggy compared to that, but not too bad.

I'll see how it behaves over the coming weeks/months, but if it starts to cause issues i'll probably head back to 7 and ride that sinking shop down until I can't tolerate it anymore or have to upgrade for software reasons

There's an old saying "Linux is only free if your time is worthless." With Windows 10, I don't think that this is true anymore. I was able to compare firsthand as I had a dual-boot Linux/Windows 10 SSD which had not been used since last year.

I booted into Linux, saw that updates were available (including video driver and kernel.) Installed all updates, rebooted, all up to date. Total time = 5 minutes (let's make it 10 counting the first boot and finding updates.)

I booted into Windows...
Checking for updates = 10 mins.
Downloading latest "Creator's update" = 45 mins.
Installing latest "Creator's update" = 90 mins.
Shutting down after "Creator's update" = 10 mins.
Continuing install of "Creator's update" on boot = 15 mins.
Checking for updates again = 10 mins. (There were about 30 available.)
Downloading updates = 25 mins.
Installing updates = 60 mins.

At this point I had to take the drive away so shut it down, so I still don't know the total. :^p I think over 4 hours, more than 26x as long as Linux took, is more than a little excessive. YMMV of course!

Windows 10 pushes new users ever harder...

Microsoft Hides Windows 10's Offline Account Option

Microsoft has become a services company. It would much prefer that people sign up for its subscription-based services...

... Setting up a local account on Windows 10 was already a convoluted process: people had to make sure their device wasn't connected to the internet, confirm they don't have internet, click "Continue with limited setup" and then finally select the option to create an offline account. Otherwise the setup process would all but force them into setting up a Microsoft Account even though they really only wanted to use the system they had paid for.

So how could that process be made even worse?...

Does that remind you of an old abandoned lavatory lost in a dungeon basement with broken failed lights and guarded by a decrepit sign of Beware of The Tiger?

It shows... Satya's certainly learned from Apple's bean-counter Tim Cook. The recent Mojave and iOS updates are so buggy my Macs and iPhone have become more dysfunctional that useful. I'll waste yet another day of my life reverting to the older, soon-to-be unsupported, macoS Sierra just so I can get work done next week.

What's next? Starbucks saying that coffee is no longer their most important "layer"?

This is the reason that a lot of us are switching over to Linux these days (a lot of us want to be in control on what an OS does and not be dictated to by an OS).

Cheers.

Although, I am still using Winders 10 on a dual boot; it is ONLY for gaming and nothing more. :) Everything else I used to do in Winders, I now do in Linux. :)

Have a great day! :)

I have one Windows 8.1 PC enlisted in Science United. When I tried to enlist a laptop with SuSE Leap 15.0 it was refused because its BOINC (7.8.3) was too old. Instead a VirtualBox Linux with SuSE Tumbleweed OS and kernel 5.3.1 was accepted because its BOINC is 7.14.2. It is a guest OS on the 8.1 PC. Last night I had a Windows 10 cumulative upgrade on another Windows 10 PC, not enlisted in Science United.

Here's a little surprise that I stumbled across:

YouTube: Windows Vs Linux - Every Blender user needs to see this!

CG Geek

Realtime Rendering, Physics, Simulations, Animation, and more! I benchmarked everything in Blender and compared Windows Vs Linux! This might surprise you...

That certainly surprised me even for my cynicism!

How can Windows 10 be so painfully slow?!!

Why is Windows 10 a mess? Ex-Microsoft engineer blames the culture of 'made-men'

Windows 10 could be better if only Microsoft got rid of its layers of made-men, according to a former Microsoft distinguished engineer.

Greetings,

I read the article and then decided to watch the video at the top of it. I noticed the computer under the display of Ed Lott. It's a Tandy Radio Shack TRS 100? 200? Don't exactly remember the number. I have that very same computer! I pulled it out of storage a couple months ago to see if it still works and it does. That is so cool to see something from yesteryear, that I currently own, in a modern video on the Internet. :)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Keith,

The update has since been pulled, but if you do come across it, don't install it unless you're sure it's meant to - with the current state of Microsoft's updates, it'll probably break the internet or something.

At the rate Micro$oft is going, it just might. lol :D

By the way, I have updates pending and have not allowed Winders to install them... yet. I'll have to check the numbers now. :)

Have a great day! :)
