Back in the old days a person would usually at least get dinner before getting . . . you know. :P

Hehehe :-)

I can still remember in 1963, when Shell Mex petrol was 4s-10p (38 cents) a gallon. You could drive into a petrol station buy 4 gallons, 4 shots of Red-Ex at 1p each, and still get change from a pound note.

Yep Kenz, the good old days!

I must have been a little earlier on the road because I used to buy 1 gallon 4/6 and a bag of Smiths crisps and get change from 5 bob.

I think they were 4 1/2d then, finding the blue bag and driving could be a problem.

I started with driving school lessons in late 62, Hillman Minx, but then my Dad's best mate said he would teach me, he did in two weeks flat, Easter time, which included the driving test, Ford Zodiac Mark II. He was a police driving instructor.

Bought a beaten up Ford Anglia, basically light blue but with red lead primer passenger side front wing and door, plus front suspension, from a scrap yard.

Here is a table with gas prices around the world. It's about a week old data and I know prices have gone up some. Red is the total price per gallon. Blue is the tax portion of the price.

Aha! as I suspected. Most countries charge 60% tax on fuel. The USA & Canada only have 15-18% wonder why that is?

In the US it is collected in pennies per gallon rather than as a % of the price of the fuel.

California adds a sales tax based on the total price, including federal taxes. It's one of the few taxes on a tax.

Alberta takes less in taxes than other parts of the country, and there is no provincial sales tax. It is still way too much!

Most of the rest of Canada (and some parts of the US) pays Alberta taxes everytime they buy petroleum products.

Two other things to look at: income tax rates (high in Canada) and Federal deficits (a little scary in Canada, mind boggling in the US). When you include hidden taxes and taxes on taxes, the Canadian total tax rate on fuel is reported to be over 40% by consumer groups, and 47% according to a sign on the pump where I filled up yesterday (they may be biased).

Fuel tax, and VAT (sales tax) on top, make the UK take on a gallon of fuel around 70+%.

It annoys me that it now costs me £80 ($125) to fill the car with fuel so that I can get to work and back a few days - and pay stupidly high levels of tax on the money I earn through working. And then pay another 20% tax on anything that's left when I spend it!

The reason LPG is so much cheaper in the UK isn't that its cheaper to make, it actually costs slightly more to refine than Petrol or Diesel, it's because it has a far lower rate of duty and because it comes from the North Sea, so is out of the hands of OPEC.
Just filled my car up for 70.9 ppl at my local shell. The weird thing is, I remember filling up with Petrol at that price and I've only been driving 7 years.

Converting a car is not exactly encouraged here, plus it's not cheap or something that can be done on all cars, yeah I'd investigated the idea a while back, it's only available for some cars, Mine isn't one of the lucky few. So gas at whatever price is it for Me.

Average around where I live is $3.57 or so a gallon. I don't have a choice but to buy gas, as I've got a bad leg, and I have kids to shuffle to and from school. However, the car's we own do very good with gas mileage. My wifes car averages about 25-30 miles per gallon, and my little Suzuki Samurai gets about 20 or so. With my Samurai, I can go to and from work, and take kids to school 5 days a week and my gas will last roughly 2 1/2 weeks a tank. So if the prices go up, I'm still doing okay. Obviously it will hit the pocket book, but when you have no choice but to depend on your vehicles, you find ways to keep them running.

It's certainly true that not all cars can be converted, Diesels for instance are right out, as are direct injection Petrols at the moment, but they're working on that. Turbocharged and Supercharged are tricky but usually possible (I know someone with an Impreza STI that works brilliantly), pretty much anything else is possible though, Lovato supply kits tailored to just about every car you've ever heard of in this country.
I suppose a bigger obstacle would be getting LPG is there's little supply infrastructure, over here there are enough outlets that it's possible without notable inconvenice, pretty well every Shell and BP station sells gas for example, along with a large number of supermarkets. I have a rather handy Sat-Nav POI list with them all listed, which makes plotting a journey to include at least one station child's play.

My cars fuel injected via computer control, as to getting the LPG, that's easy, Barstow is a Truck Stop, Even U-Haul sells LPG, but no conversion kits, just trailer hitches and moving supplies for self moving, they also rent out small trucks too.

When I had a pick me up truck it cost me up to $125.oo to fill the dang thing up. Now I have a 2.4 liter puddle jumper that only costs me $45.oo to $50.oo to fill up. In a small way it is lucky that I don’t go to work anymore. (A fill up every six days.) I would still trade Chemo’ for work any day.

Yeah work is better than Chemo any day, and nice car Celt, almost the same blue color as mine is, Mines a 1999 FORD Escort zx2 sport Hot Coupe w/a 2.0L engine, the car gets 26mpg, I use a K&N air filter and a K&N oil filter with Royal Purple 5w30 oil to keep the car running and soon I need to spend $80 to get an oil change, it used to smoke when I floored it, not anymore, now it just runs purrfectly. I just buy enough gas to get Me to town(25 miles) a few times and to the Post Office to pickup the mail(5 miles), Gas over $3.859 will hurt Me some, but then to buy the same 5.89 gallons would cost Me $22.73 and that would get Me nearly to half a tank of gas and that's $7.29 more than I thought I'd be spending on gas for March as I'd listed $15.44 for gas or about 4 gallons on My monthly budget.

Cheap Barstow Gas Prices and Gas Stations with the Lowest Gas Prices in Barstow is one url I have for gas, but I like Gas Prices - MSN Autos better as It includes a map of where the stations are at and so I can avoid the more expensive gas, plus the site can be adjusted for a 5 digit zip code and it's updated per octane grade and at what station asap.
