Finally got some tasks for my GPU but everyone of them fails with the message "error while computing". The event log contains the messages below. Jobs using cpu seem to be ok. I had some errors on cpu when I first used lunatics installer but that was because I had jobs running when I did the install. The cpu jobs seem ok now but gpu receives errors. Grr when it rains it pours I run for years with out problems then this week I have two machines with issues. The other one was caused by kaspersky which occasionally decides to change the settings back to its own for Bionic. Got that one solved but can't determine what's wrong with the GPU. Can someone help? I have turned off the GPU for now. 6/30/2011 2:28:23 AM | SETI@home | Starting 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 6/30/2011 2:28:23 AM | SETI@home | Starting task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 610 6/30/2011 2:28:25 AM | SETI@home | Task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 6/30/2011 2:28:25 AM | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 6/30/2011 2:28:25 AM | SETI@home | Restarting task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 610 6/30/2011 2:28:26 AM | SETI@home | Task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 6/30/2011 2:28:26 AM | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 6/30/2011 2:28:26 AM | SETI@home | Finished download of 26fe11aa.1560.29759.14.10.197 6/30/2011 2:28:26 AM | SETI@home | Started download of 26fe11aa.1560.29759.14.10.211 6/30/2011 2:28:26 AM | SETI@home | Restarting task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 610 6/30/2011 2:28:27 AM | SETI@home | Task 28ap11ah.25360.13973.8.10.12_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file |

part II of question - I was able to suspend the use of the gpu in local preferences but did not see how to stop getting new tasks for gpu. I see where I can stop getting tasks for the NVIDIA GPU but not the ATI. anyone know how to stop getting tasks? Thanks |

I see zero errors on your host with HD5xxx GPU. Give link to errored WU. |

I think he means this PC and not the one with the HD5700. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

Did you read the Options when you installed?, Your HD 2300/2400/3200 doesn't have OpenCL support, only ATI HD4*** series and above have it, so you can't run OpenCL apps on it, only the Hybrid Astropulse app. (Even if you had an OpenCL capable GPU, Cat 10.5 is too old, Cat 10.7b and SDK is the oldest supported) Number of period iterations for PulseFind setted to:5 Rerun the Installer and only select apps that your GPU is capable or running. Once you've put an ATI app in an app_info you can't stop Boinc asking for ATI work from Seti, there are no Stock ATI apps, so that Preference isn't enabled and visable, you can disable the fetching of seti_enhanced and astropulse work, but that will stop your fetching of work for the CPU too, Claggy |

I see where Bionic sees my card as CAL ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200 (RV610) (320MB) but the AMD control center reports it as shown below. That's why I set it up as a HD4***. Seems Bionic must be correct. Anyway I've reinstalled and will see what happens. Thanks for your help. That's an onboard graphics card and is probably only going be able to do the Hybrid work as previously noted. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

So I have thought about this some more and something doesn't seem right. Both the AMD control center and Windows device manager reports my card as a HD4250, yet Bionic thinks it is one of CAL ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200. Both can't be right. I have reinstalled and selected options for the HD 2300/2400/3200 so I'll see if that corrects the problem. What I'm not clear on is why the difference in how the cards are identified? |

BOINC can only interpret what the developers code into the program. Windows and the ATi control panel are going to be more accurate than BOINC (pedantic: notice it's not spelled bionic! :) |

Mobile GPU's are lower end parts just named differently. We see this all the time at Milkyway when someone with a 48xxM or 58xxM thinks it is the same GPU as the 48xx and 58xx, but it is more likely that it is 46xx and 57xx architecture. BOINC looks at the [RV] version to determine what you have and that info is coded into BOINC itself. |

... I have a feeling that the HD42** is a rebadged HD3*** GPU, I think the key is that it is a Mobility HD4200. Even though they use the same branding and model numbers, the Mobility series is not the same engine as a discrete graphics card. Found this article that agrees with your feeling about the embedded 4200's being based on the HD 3400 core. Edit. Was typing while arkayn was posting. What he said. :-) |

It was mentioned over AMD forums few times that not all HD4xxx GPUs share same architecture (just as other generations do). It's marketing trick that only complicates our lives. HD42xx have actually HD3xxx-like architecture. I had host with HD4200 embedded GPU to test recently and can definitely say no - it doesn't support OpenCL. Full list of suppored GPUs placed on AMD site and link to that page should be in release notes for app. So, please, read more! |

As far as I can see, the Mobility HD4250 is apparently RV620 based, which appears to be used in the Radeon HD3400s, including rather confusingly, the Mobility Radeon HD3400s! Why on Earth do they have to make things so difficult? Yep, over to GPU-Z..... Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

It was mentioned over AMD forums* few times that not all HD4xxx GPUs share same architecture (just as other generations do). It's marketing trick that only complicates our lives. HD42xx have actually HD3xxx-like architecture*. Hi, you're quite right about that* and I even wonder if it's worth trying to use the GPU, in Sandy Bridge CPUs like the i7-2600 (and other i5-xxxx/i3-xxxx), CPU/GPUs for OpenCL calculations? Although this is a total different 'case' and should work, but at the expence of CPU performance loss(?) and total dissipation (TDP). Atleast my i7-2600 with 2 5870s, now produces valid results, with ATI HD5000 rev.177 ! Host 5884985. You have done a great job, Raistmer et all, ;-) and we all should read more about so called 'new' cards, mobile cards (LapTops/NetBooks), nVIDIA started this confusing marketing 'trick', like 8800GTX--> 9800GTX(+)--> GTS250 and now AMD does something 'alike'. Confusing & Confusing ! Using the GPUs, real name, RVxxx(ATI) andG92; G100, etc. (nVIDIA) would make things easier and more clear, IMO. |

OK, before people then think that BOINC must have wrong code or must be wrong in what it's doing, here is what it is doing. BOINC will look on your system for part of the videocard driver. In the case of Nvidia, it'll be the nvcude.dll. In the case of ATI, it'll be aticalrt.dll/aticalrt64.dll and amdcalrt.dll/amdcalrt64.dll. Inside these libraries, there is lots of information about the various videocards (GPUs), IGPs and APUs that are available. In the case of Nvidia, BOINC reads the name of the videocard directly from the library (using cuDeviceGetName). In the case of ATI, BOINC will search inside these libraries for a specific value set in CAL_TARGET and compares that against a list of known CPUs according to AMD's Stream SDK 2.3 shipped with the AMD Catalyst 10.12 APP. This is how RV610 gets to be seen as what it is: case CAL_TARGET_610: gpu_name="ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200 (RV610)"; If you think this is wrong, then you will have to complain to ATI about that. It's their library from their own videocard driver that BOINC gets the information from. |

Thanks for all the info! Seems all is not as it seems and the card is really a lower end HD 2300/2400/3200. So I'll just wait and see if the card can handle the Hybrid Astropulse. Learn something new all the time. I also have a machine with a HD5700 on which I would like to use the GPU but not until I can control getting tasks for the GPU through preferences as that is my "entertainment" system and don't want it slowed down except during time when I'm away. Any guess as to when that might happen. |

It's a harmless bit of fun and long may it continue :-)) Until you find people confused that they cannot find the "BIONIC" (Data) directory, or any mention of it in the registry (for whatever reason they need to be there). BOINC, Bionic, BIONC, Bionoic, Bionk, Boink, BONC, BINK, BONIC, BINOC, what's in a name. ;-) |
