QCN participant records the M8.8 earthquake in Chile

On February 27, 2010 a M8.8 earthquake struck Chile just northwest of the major city of Concepcion. A QCN partner at the University of Concepcion was testing a JoyWarrior USB sensor with the goal of introducing QCN to the region in the future. The sensor caught the M8.8 mainshock and a number of aftershocks that followed. The computer was attached to a backup power supply that kept the computer running for one hour after the earthquake knocked out power to most of the city. Unfortunately, at the time of the earthquake the sensor was not connected to the floor, but most of the earthquake record looks surprisingly good. The very high accelerations approximately 15 seconds into the record may be the sensor falling off of the box it was sitting on.

QCN responds to the M8.8 earthquake in Chile

On March 9, two graduate students flew to Chile to begin installing 100 QCN sensors in the region affected by the recent M8.8 earthquake. Our partners at the University of Concepcion are coordinating the installation of sensors. Volunteers from the University of Concepcion and University of Santiago will assist with installing sensors in cities throughout the region. We hope to record many of the aftershocks that are still occurring in the area to better understand the distribution of aftershocks and to study the properties of earthquakes. We will include updates on their progress and the data that are recorded in the coming weeks. I've read that Concepcion was shifted W by 3.04 meters according to GPS measurements. This shows the strength of the quake.

And I think the News said Santiago was shifted about 1'(0.3048 meters, according to a Google search I did), the information didn't say if this was in elevation or what of course, Another city was shifted by about 5'(1.52400 meters) or so. So there have been changes, I expect We may find out more soon.

I'm surprised that all this time later they are still getting frequent aftershocks, some are very sizable too!

I am not surprised, given the magnitudo of the Chile quake. It was 500 times more intense then the Haiti quake, yet it caused a far less number of victims (about 450, from what I read). Aftershocks are a way of discharging energy still present. They can go on for months.

There was another large aftershock (or new quake?) yesterday, registering 6.9 on the Richter scale, which has set off another sequence of very strong aftershocks in excess of 5 on the Richter scale.

They are certainly getting a very bumpy ride over there!

Quakes generate aftershocks afterwards and this 8.8 is no different, They may have for weeks, months and sometimes for a few years before finally being fairly quiet(2.5 or less can't be felt). Distances are relative to Yermo CA where I live and unless their close to Me, They aren't something to be felt around here, I'd feel the quake if It was above 2.5 most likely, As the last quake I felt was a 3.0 from Barstow CA, The farther away a quake is the bigger It has to be to be felt by those in surrounding areas(Not like I'd wish a big quake on anyone).

Yes, the epicenter was my city!!, in fact there were 4 quakes (6.9 - 6.7 - 6-0 and 5.4 plus many others during the day) , all of them in less than 30 mins. It was chaos, since it was 11:30am and everyone was working and kids were at their first week at school. (our school period starts in March).

I was alone at home, so I couldn't know about my family for more than 40 mins. Workers went home, malls were closed and my city was declared as "disaster area", which means we'll receive governmental help.

As you can see, things are still pretty bad here. This happened on March 11th, when President Piñera was taking the reigns from Michelle Bachelet...that's gotta mean something!! http://bit.ly/ab5Nf7

It was good to see Tiare post to confirm she was OK, and her family despite the severity of the destruction.

That is one of a large number of tectonic episodes recently, but a very big one by any standards.
