I made a POLL on the Lunatics opt. crew site.. [http://lunatics.kwsn.net/12-gpu-crunching/setihome-on-ati-gpu-you-have-or-you-will-buy-an-ati-gpu.0.html] I guess you need an account on the Lunatics site for your vote. Is here someone without account there? ;-) If yes and you don't want to register there, you could also vote here.. :-) You will calculate SETI@home on an ATI GPU ? [..if it will be possible].

I tried creating an account on Lunatics, but apparently with Simon gone, new accounts are not being activated. Not all options seem to be available in your poll. What I would vote is: IX. Unsure - I have an ATi GPU but I don't know if I'll allow any project to use it for crunching. |

@ dnolan Thanks. ..strange. Hmm.. now I get the idea.. ;-) ..some funny people could vote two times? One time there anonymous and here public.. So maybe better only here for to be sure, that nobody make 'funny' things? ![]() |

@ OzzFan O.K., extended the poll with number IX. ;-) But - why you are unsure to allow crunching on your ATI GPU? ![]() |

If I could figure out how to vote I'd vote. |

I closed the vote on the Lunatics site.. I'm sorry! ..for to be sure that nobody vote two times.. anonymous and here public. So please vote only here. :-) Message and number. And maybe if you voted for IX., please write why you are unsure to crunch on your ATI GPU. My 4 OCed GTX260-216 crunch happily 24/7 and if I buy ATI GPUs, then they will also crunch 24/7.. ;-) So you all could guess for what I voted at Lunatics.. Right.. ;-) ..I vote/ed for number VI. .. ![]() |

[Extension for my upper post.] O.K., if the ATI GPUs have only ~ 10 % speed up.. then no.. But if the performance is + ~ 50 % for the same power consumption, yes. |

But - why you are unsure to allow crunching on your ATI GPU? Simply haven't made up my mind if I like the idea or not. |

IV -- and the same answer if it was Nvidia instead of ATI. I won't spend money on specific crunching hardware. If it works and doesn't interfere with the other things I do with my machines, fine. |

I vote "V". Edit: Well, actually, probably "VI". |

IX, as I use the videocard for what it is intended for: gaming. So make that X, definitely NO even though I have a suitable ATI card. |

Hi Sutaru, [Posted at Lunatics first, should have read instructions properly ::S] Myself I don't have an ATi GPU ...So my vote has to be "III. NO - I don't have an ATI GPU"... well actually I do have some ancient AGP cards in a box somewhere that are not up to modern standards, so wouldn't work. I do know there are at least a couple of us that do have more modern cards of that brand. My GPU acquisitions have come from either kind friends, or the scrapheap, due to financial limitations. I find it very difficult to justify, for my own situation, to buy a large card that will use lots of power, and need me to upgrade power supply etc. IMO a multibeam port to Ati GPU would be difficult, not impossible. Maybe OpenCL will help the convergence of builds, reducing the duplication of effort among brands. Experience with that language though, takes as much time to learn as any other language though. There are technical challenges in working with GPU code & hardware we're all still coming to grips with. Perhaps over time the picture will change, though I doubt it would be quickly. That's partly because of some specific technical challenges with the multibeam algorithms, mapping to new hardware. Time limitations, AFAIK, play some part for all of us, as well as hardware costs & development support tool/library/language capabilities & quality have been described as limited by some who've tried. That slows things down. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. VII If I would buy a new card, I would be looking for the best computation power/power consumption-ratio, no matter if it's NVIDIA or ATI. AFAIK, at the moment, ATI has the better ratio, but that can change quickly. ![]() |
