I just looked and saw the current release is now 6.4.6. I do not see any release notes on the changes though, does anyone know?

Message 869699 - Posted: 26 Feb 2009, 15:13:46 UTC - in response to Message 869693.

It's got mostly screen saver changes. From the Change Log thread:

Rom Walton wrote:
Change Log:

- client: add <no_gpus> config option

- WINSETUP: Fix the problem introduced where Enable Application execution wasn't working.

- MGR: Don't convert strings to ANSI juts to have to reconvert them back to Unicode. Fix several help link issues.Fixes #826

- WINSCR: Fix the BOINC text displayed is the screensaver control panel applet

- WINSCR: Get rid of the 'Up to 5 second wait' for the data thread to terminate. Force terminate the thread and clean up the graphics app in a clean-up routine. Forcing the user to wait when they return to the system isn't a good idea.

- WINSCR: Fix screensaver issue where the screensaver locks up when the graphics application deadlocks for one reason or another.

Create two new threads:

1. Monitor system for keyboard and mouse events.
2. Shuffle window z-order positions if needed.

The keyboard/mouse event monitor is isolated from either the core client getting stuck in a loop and not returning the results of an RPC or the window shuffling code which can get stuck if the graphics application dead locks.

The window shuffle code is isolated due to the BroadcastSystemMessage?() API using something akin to SendMessage?() which waits for a return value from the target windows winproc. If a graphics application deadlocks for one reason or another it'll cause the thread to stall. This isn't terminal and so we just wait for the next time the data thread chooses a new application and terminates the old one which will cause the thread to resume.

This should resolve all outstanding issues with the screensaver not exiting when the mouse or keyboard is used.

I just downloaded version 6.4.6. I first uninstalled 6.4.5 and then tried to install the new one, but every time I try to run the installer all I get is an error reading configuration file and it aborts. I went back to 6.4.5 for now and it's working fine. No idea what the problem is.

I'm running 6.4.5 on one host, and 6.4.6 on another (fresh install). Perhaps it's a problem with upgrading from .5 to .6?

I believe they have made a change in 6.4.6 after its first release because of problems installing it. So if you had problems try downloading it again.

Tried that just now. Deleted old file, downloaded new one from BOINC website. Shut down BOINC, uninstalled it, rebooted computer, tried to run new installer. All I get is the same result, a box with this message in it:

Error reading setup initialization file

So I went back to 6.4.5 again. Don't have any trouble at all installing it. Something is wrong somewhere, no idea what. OS is Windows XP SP3.

Windows "downloads" files from its internal cache until the cached version is found and deleted. When you go back to download a new version of the file, Windows assumes that the one that is cached is correct. Find that and kill it and you might do better. Note that at least some versions of Windows hide the cached version in a hidden directory.

Try installing it over the existing version as I did, instead of uninstalling the previous version first. I had no problems.

That is the problem. Download into the same position and answer "yes" to the request to overwrite. Then cancel that download and try again. Now the new version should download.

Delete that file, AND the one in the download cache and try again.

Actually, the issue appears to still exist. I just now tried to download 6.4.6 for the first time (so nothing could have been cached anywhere). I get the aforementioned error (Error reading setup initialization file) upon execution.

I was attempted to just install over the old (6.4.5) version.

Vista, 32-bit.

Hi, a few days ago, I UPgraded my 3 QUAD's (XP32/XP64/VISTA32), to 6.6.9*., used 6.4.5. on these hosts, but without UNinstalling the previous version, all install's went without any problem, so why UNinstall, first?
I never do that, IMHO it's just extra work.
* Was not a recommended install, no official release, yet.

I just realized I typo'd and may have conveyed an incorrect impression...

I meant to say... "I was attempting to just install over the old version"

So... I did exactly what you are saying, and it failed (except I was trying 6.4.6).

I am the OP of this thread. I downloaded the file when I posted this thread, however, I did not not install it right away as I wanted to see what the changes were. After I read the responce I installed it and everything went perfect, and it was an ungrade from 6.4.5. Not sure why others after are having issues.

All right, last night during the upload something went wrong with the upload of 6.4.6 which may have caused it not to propagate to all download mirrors yet. So the one from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php may be broken.

However, the one on the actual download site can be reached and is OK. I just tested it.

So if you have a problem with the download, get 6.4.6 from here:
BOINC 6.4.6 Windows 32bit
BOINC 6.4.6 Windows 64bit

It is probably wise to delete your temporary internet files before downloading the new one, just in case.

If John is right and it is the temporary download cache from Internet Explorer, you can try holding down the shift key while you click on the download link. This will always start a new download while disregarding the cache.

Yes, but the problem is that the version on the mirror site is broken. It can take up to 24 hours for the new version to propagate there.
