You know thos sites that pop up saying something like:

Now scanning your system for viruses

and reads the files it's "scanning" and then tells you to hit a button that "fixes" these "problems" and gives you a virus? Well it's funny how obvious they are. I am on a linux comp right now and I just got one of those and you know what it said? It said it was scanning things such as explorer.exe and the windows registry! Now what could be wrong with this picture.... LOL

It sounds as though that may come from experience......

I can add to that... use ALT+F4 to close the window, I saw one X box a while ago that was made to look like part of the graphic, it most likely was another "run the code" button.

Im almost exclusively using Linux now.

When I'm using my windows comp, very rare now, the red X doesn't make a different. My X is blue ;)

When browsing the WEB, I now use my LINUX box, wich are less likely prone to virusses, cause there are many different distro's and it's less widely used, then WIN98/2000/ME, XP and VISTA.

I'm another ALT F4 user. I won't click things that I can't be sure what they are.

Understandable with the way most are. A good thing about Linux is that it is NO where near as susceptible to viruses as it's file system is completely different than that of Windows, the most widely used OS.

Three thousand years of human evolution and development, and when confronted with a large wooden horse, most people will still bring it into their city.

Run Firefox and NoScript. Don't let a site run scripts unless you know you want the scripts (and to web authors: avoid scripting for functions that are well supported without scripting, like navigation).

In E-Mail, make sure there is some personal content to go along with an attachment, make sure the text "sounds" like the person who allegedly wrote it.

If you aren't sure, ask them.

Alas, there are a lot of Typhoid Mary's out there. I read in an article that the biggest threat to a company's system is not what comes from the outside, it's the employee's themselves, because they open those personal emails they get while disabling the company's virus protection systems, out of pure curiosity. Then they download those infected emails and have the systems infected.

It's hard, because the companies usually accept private emails sent to the employees and private surfing on the 'net.

The viruses usually don't get to the employee's desktop through the corporate mail system -- they come in through Hotmail, or Yahoo! or GMail.

That's what I mean, the employee's use their private email accounts at work, and they surf on unsafe sites, while they disable the virus protections on the company's system.

So its the companys fault.
In our company a regular user isn´t able to turn off virus protection.
Also critical sites are blocked by our admins.

The biggest error is sitting 10 inches behind the keyboard.

No reason to think it was someone on board. If it came up on a compact flash card, if could even have been there at the plant that makes the cards, or on a official card that some scientist put into his PC that was infected.

The only lesson to learn is that Windoze can't be secured no matter what.

And how do you get anti-virus updates is orbit?

My method of not getting any nasties when surfing sites i havent been on before or when looking for some information, googeling about.
Get an old pc, take the hard drive out,
It only needs a CD rom, and surficient ram to function, old type ram is cheep, got plenty in the "work`s but not worth it box" I don`t like bining stuff if it isent dead (unless it went in a perticularly interesting way, then it becomes an ornament ..... :)
put in a Linux live distro and use that,
Every time you start the system (or press reset cos you got somthing) you get a new born squeeky clean os,
with this I can go play in internet hell, and click anything I like just to see what happens, NOTHING survives a restart.
If the pc gets a BIOS bug that kill`s it, motherboards that old cost between nothing and a nod, I`ve got several, given by freinds because they just wanted rid of the stuff.
the only thing the bad site may get is your ip address, in case they want to attack your firewall or launch a DOS attack,
