I found a seat at the bar that let me watch the room, my bike parked out front, and the bartender, all at the same time. The bartender qualified as first-rate eye candy and the patrons looked civil. Always a good sign, but things can change in a hurry. I ordered coffee, Glennfiddich over ice, and a menu.

One of the good ole boys said, “Ice?” I heard the snicker, and the little slur beneath it. I gave him the look over the top of my sunglasses, then took the glasses off and laid them on the bar. Opinions vary, and most are worth exactly what you pay for them. I’ve served more Jack Daniels and Coke than I care to remember. Jack and Coke… You could put ant poison in that crap and never know the difference. But people should be free to drink any damned fool thing they like. Besides, it’s just not smart to start a sword fight with someone who might favor a Colt 45, or who might simply be nimble enough to make you fall down on that stupid thing.

I just sighed, and asked Eye Candy about the lunch specials.
