Message 741319 - Posted: 19 Apr 2008, 11:20:53 UTC - in response to Message 741246.

The RedX works. It is not about redxing the ideas, but the "other stuff." It does not matter if a user did it or a moderator. So with "no" RedX's it "assumed" that the users (all inclusive) are happy... Otherwise is all to the moderators to decide....

That all said, as the thread has been hijacked... It is in danger of proving it is another useless thread. No One took time to RedX the posts starting way back that would/could have prevented that.

I'm going to say this once and once only. I suggest you listen. I know for a fact someone did Red-X a post in this thread. As a mod, if you looked at whatever happens when a user Red-X's you would have seen it. So I suggest you refrain from saying that no users took an interest in where this thread headed and what certain posters did.

Or is it that no user Red-X another user (non-mod), but it doesn't count if we Red-X a mod.

You don't like us making sweeping statements, misrepresenting the truth and twisting words but here you somehow do.

I also red xed some of the earlier posting as being out of line (if not down right flame baiting) but was not surprised when nothing was done since it was a mods posts.

Thanks SargeD...seems like the watchers need to be watched more closely...I knew that this was happening behind the scenes...as several have told me they RedX'd a certain mod's posts as being out of line and clear flame baiting...I however with a certain fascination found it interesting that the premise under which those clear flame baiting posts were made clearly backfired...and revealed who that person really was and the clearly defined issues that many have with them. So thanks again for pointing out what you did by Red X'ing and the result of that...only when something is in the clear can the problems and shortcomings be clearly seen.

Good morning Dear Friends!!!

Some people don't understand why this thread has been given so much latitude, why the red-x button hasn't been acted upon.

Well I don't know the reason either...I can only speculate.

My best guess is...

THIS IS A TEST!

The new Administrator would like to know how much moderation is needed, whether we've learned anything over the past year, whether we are able to get along civilly with one another. The new Administrator, he's a scientist, right?

Not that I know..I'm only guessing. :]]

Now where did I put that "Cooling Off" cellphone number for Eric?

There is nothing complicated about it at all. I think Norman has hit the nail on the head.

From a few posts previously... Word twisting?

This I think is more a case of imposing an 'interpretation' that is blinded by whatever 'histories' are assumed.

Can people perhaps have the courtesy please to ask for clarification before feeding the sharks?

Also, reading up on (even just a summary) of Socrates and the Socratic method should be interesting.

Also, take the "here and now" and try looking more at a positive future?

For waaay back now and thoughts of using an "OmbudsMod"...

Sorry, I think that is way too complicated and over the top. This is only a 'friendly forum'. Forum members should have a life elsewhere or be in non-forum communication with whichever friends. Whatever flame-fests should soon die for lack of fuel (hence the cool-off) period. And if whatever flame-fest is with a Mod, then the other Mods should deal with that or the Mod rotation clears the problem eventually.

Some fights just aren't worth the collateral damage.

I'd rather development effort went into improving the science and the infrastructure rather than descending into legalistic judicially turgid procedures!

Martin

If this morning's session shows anything, it is that a "Cooling Off" moderator tool would be extremely useful.

I think the "Cooling Off" period should be for 24 hours; less wouldn't be enough.

That's just my humble, honest opinion. :]]

Why do we need new ideas for moderation? Being a mod on other boards, and having been one here, I know that forum moderation is easy. The only possible difficulty is that, when posting or moderating, the moderators always must be aware that they are representing the forum's administration.

What hogwash! Sure, moderation is easy if one ignores offensive behaviour and lets certain posters do what they want to the detriment of other posters. But that is not being a good moderator. A good moderator has to act on offensive behaviour even if it may cost a friendship; to look the other way is easy, to tell a friend they are doing wrong is not at all easy.

As for your claim that "representing the forum's administration" is difficult, being such a representative (if that is so) has nothing to do with the difficulties that arise on the boards. The "forum's administration" should monitor the moderators, all of whom are volunteers, and if moderators act improperly, the administrators can and should remove them. This is no difficulty, it's just the way things work.

I'm sure particular charactors know their onions, so things will change. And yes they will work out if it is for the better or worse with differing opinions.
With 'new' and fresh opinions ideas and less suffocation of the self important egotists {just because you've settled yourself doesn't say your right}. Cash will do the talking though, some of us just want better mechanisms, its not for those 'part of the furniture' charactors to spread dusty cobwebs. Hey, modern management is about fluidity, if you don't grasp that, someone will.

Qui-Gon..if we are not allowed to discuss your post i suggest that you don't post it in this thread.

This message was made because i am confused as to why you posted this if we are not allowed to discuss it. It was not made for any other reason.

Complaining about why I removed off-topic posts is not allowed. This thread is titled "How do we express new ideas for forum moderation?", not "How do we complain about moderators doing their job?" If the thread doesn't get back on topic, it should be closed. So again, please get back on topic.

No..i was talking about some of the rules and how they might be interpreted... which can cause upset.

Something bought it to my attention so i made a post about it. Which apparently..even though it was on topic..i suddenly wasn't allowed to make a post about. This makes no sense to me. I feel like K. in the Trial.

OK.....on topic, eh?

Some have run roughshod over these boards for waaaaaaay too long.

The new changes have been far too long in coming......

I personally await them.

And I have not singled out anybody, so this post breaks no rules......

I am one of the most avid Seti supporters that exists on the boards.......so take my opinion for what it is......

THE KITTIES HAVE SPOKEN.............

Hi Mark!!!

Okies! Your opinion is noted, I'm sure.

Can we get back to focussing on solutions, improvements to the moderating system?

That'd be nice. :]]

I still strongly support changing a temp ban from 6 hours to 24 hours, giving the poster time to "cool off", to allow discussion amongst the moderators and the forum admin person, since it is no longer Eric. Then, if a ban is to be imposed, it should be made where more than 3 or 4 moderators vote makes it final, since 24 hours in the temp ban is given, it gives more moderators a chance to speak their mind.
