[quote][quote]Be sure to include any discussion or pictures of knives as well...the Brits just love to stab each other to death since there aren't too many handguns laying around.

Ban the steak knife!

To quote part of my original post..

Are weapons of any kind deemed "kid friendly" and appropriate to use?

I would almost interpret your comment as a flame against the Brits.

...not really ol' bean, here in the Colonies we can stab people as good as any one, it's just that we don't like the mess on our hands.

Perhaps a Swiss pocket light sabre is out of the question...?

Thank jeebus they're illegal, right? I mean that clearly keeps them out of the hands of people.

Oh right, the criminals don't care if they're legal or not, they just go buy one.

Cordially,

But if for example Misfits avatar is OK, gun pics in posts have to be OK as well.

Hi Saenger! ::waves::

I had a long discussion with Kenzieb that included pics of howitzers. There were no complaints.

As for my specific avatar, the guns are fake movie props. And are being aimed at a fake computer server. And has been used for at least 2 years without complaint. But it is good to see I am still foremost on your mind. :)

But you deleted posts with images of guns, why so?

We had a thread with images of hand guns that was deemed inappropriate and removed, yet we have avatars containing similar images that are allowed to remain.

A "post or I'll shoot" thread with pics of guns, and only guns with no other discussion, may be taken as a threat by the little kids that allegedly run around these boards. At best is serves no purpose and is spam. 'nuff said.

...what kids...I haven't seen any kids. If you want to see something really
frightening...check out the gaming sites where the post-rug rats hang out...
...the language alone is awe inspiring in a very negative way.

I still don't understand why an avatar aiming murderous tools at me is something else than any other pic of a gun.

And if you talk about spam, I don't have to remind you about glass houses and stones, have I? If you would delete all posts that could be seen as spam, next to all of the Café would be empty, including probably 95% of your own posts (and a considerable amount of mine as well).

No it is aiming behind you. Look out!

I personally don't have anything against your avatar, it's fine with me.
But if pics of guns are not allowed, they should not be allowed anywhere, and especially not with mods, they have a even greater duty to behave according to the rules as they set the standards.

Hey, great argument for removing the Cafe as unnecessary for the project. The Political Forum can fit into that unnecessary category too.

AFAIK it was just an ordinary thread in the Café, i.e. without much real content, just for fun. In a wider sense of the word it was spam, but as I said, most of the Café is, and I don't mind, that's the purpose of the Café. But if it's treated in another way as something similar, like your avatar, I do mind.

I don't think this thread is really about a single deleted gun lovers thread.

(I saw that post and there were some beautifully crafted pieces of equipment in it though I personally did not like the thread (I'm not into guns.) Except for the title I can't remember anyone there being offensive or aggressive.)

I think this thread might be more about feeling safe to post without fear that your post will be deleted based upon some unspoken, inconsistent or half said rule.

When someone has power but does not tell you the rules their power becomes a weapon.

I find it threatening when my posts could be deleted at any time based upon some half known rule.

I find it strange that rules are not made whole and spoken in public.

I mean what the hell does "child friendly" really mean?

I don't think rules should be inflexible but it is nice to know what they are and that they will be implemented fairly and consistently across the board.

That way we as members can get back to doing what we do best - Enjoying each others company.

I'm with Houdi.

More consistency and less guess work can only be a good thing all around.

What does "child friendly" mean? That is the real question. It is also something that gets discussed on the moderators email list a great deal. We don't have very many hard and fast rules about this as it appears to be a work in constant progress.

The politics forum has somewhat looser rules about child friendly than other places in the forums, but it is still not anything goes.

It definitely is something to discuss, and imho in the open as well. As long as the decisions seem to be random it will never really work.

I just stumbled over some definitely not kid friendly post in the Café, where a mod didn't delete it but engaged in the discussion of a bloodthirsty picture.

I don't see any consistency here, just random decisions by mighty mods.

Actually..the kids with the guns are more likely to come from back grounds where there is physical punishment. So that is a silly statement.

The guns these kids are getting hold of are replica guns that have been 'fixed' so they can work again.

This is very difficult as you rightly say.

I think that probably "child friendly" means suitable for the under 16's??

Which means taking into account the cinema ratings for films, plus the TV watershed stuff, etc etc, well we all get the drift.

It's all common sense at the end of the day anyway isn't it?

These forums AFAIK, are open to ANYONE on this planet who has an internet connection. If we were that worried about adult content there is a very easy solution.

Seti can set up a system where no-one can read/post to these forums, without firstly being a cruncher, and secondly being over 16. It can be done.

The first part is already done. You have to crunch to play (with the exception of the help area - where it is a requirement to allow people that have not yet been able to crunch to ask for help getting started).

The second is not going to happen as the administrators wish these forums to be open to all ages.

I think quite a lot of the moderators don't have children either..so are probably not really in the 'zone' when it comes to having to think about what things are child friendly or not.

... SNIP ...

I think this is a good idea.

Moderation is not an easy task but if the mods are finding it difficult to pin down (work out) issues such as what 'child friendly' really means then maybe they should trust us and let the community define what it could mean.

We can come up with the rules - or at least we can define the issues.

After all the children that are refered to by the 'child friendly' rule actually belong to us. They are members of our communities.

I would like to thank Sarge and Saenger for the idea reminder. Yes Eric please note my comments.

Is there any excusatory lyrics by you why you didn't delete the bloody, by no definition kid friendly, picture A.I posted in the thread I linked to (and that is hidden by now thanks to some other mod I presume) as soon as you saw it but even engaged in a discussion about it?
