Just got some rough news...

My best friend's Siamese (named Scraps) had to be put down this morning.

About 2 months ago cancerous tumors were detected in her lungs but she didn't seem to be in pain or otherwise uncomfortable. The doctor said to pick 5 things the cat liked to do and if she still did at least 3 out of the 5 then the cat wasn't uncomfortable. She still did her 5 favorite things (play ball, rub her back against Erin when she laid on her side, talk to Erin when she sung, eat and run around their apartment at top speeds).

They were moving last week so they decided to wait as she seemed to be ok. Also their 9-year daughter Erin apparently had asked Scraps to wait and see their new home. Scraps was with them since Erin's birth and was extremely protective of her.

Well he moved last week....within 8 hours after the move (Friday) the cat stopped eating and stopped playing. They went to the vet Monday and her abdomen was filled completely with cancerous tissue/tumors.

Scraps did what she was asked...but the family is devastated. Their younger cat Phantom is completely lost....

Please forward condolensces to your friend and his family from myself and the kitties. It is very sad any time we lose one of our cherished companions. It sounds like Scraps was happy and active until the very end, and that should be of some comfort to your friend. All too often the end comes with long term suffering and we caretakers have to make the painfull decision to end our companion's suffering.
When my kitty Tigger died at the young age of 6 years from CRF (chronic renal failure, kidney failure which was in her case genetic), I was lost for months, and her littermate sister Squirrel wandered around the house for weeks on end looking for her sister Tigger and meowing for her. It made the loss of Tigger even harder for me to handle. After a couple of months, there was a new litter of kittens born from the same mother kitty, and that's when I got Bandit, Purrball, and Tigger II, another orange tabby looking much like her stepsister namesake. It took another couple of months for the elder Squirrel to warm up to the new kittens, but they have all loved each other (and ME) since then, and are best of friends. That was 6 years ago.
I would suggest when your friend is able that they get a new kitty so Phantom has another playmate and pal. Give Phantom some time to warm up to a new arrival. And I always suggest a rescue kitty from their local shelter. Or look for one to adopt from the Petfinder.com website.

I will have the kitties say a little kitty prayer for Scraps tonight, and I will say one for your friend and his family.

Peace to all,
Mark.

Sad.... And I'm not particularly attached to cats. But kids have to learn sometime about death.... it's always too early. Condolences to Erin & the family.

That is so sad... but kind of sweet at the same time that Scraps waited.

I had a cat like that, thought he was a dog... Trevor sat and watched our actual dog chase the neighbours German Shephard out of our yard... a few weeks later we watched Trevor do exactly the same thing... funniest thing I'd seen in a long time.

One of our neighbors had a dog that enjoyed chasing cats - until the cats realized that the dog was no larger than they were...

It needs to be on a server than anybody can access with a direct link. You could sing up at Photobucket (free) and save your pictures there. Then you can link to them in a post to share with others.
