Message 644714 - Posted: 20 Sep 2007, 5:27:57 UTC

I've grown to love these forums,

There's been a lot of arguing lately and I feel these forums may be in jeopardy of being turned into just a single branch forum designed for only support and announcements.

I don't want this to happen.

I've had my scuffs and bruises but to think of these forums ever dying out makes me sad.

Now... I know we can't join hands and sing, "Kumbaya, my Lord", or go out and roast marshmallows together. But, I'd like to think we can always have this place to have fun and share data and ideas, while meeting people from around the planet who are all linked together in a common goal.

If you feel the same way and have a moment, can you please make a short post telling the SETI staff?

No debates here, please.

There's been enough of that already.

Just express here IF you want this community to exist, as is.

The choice may not be ours, but maybe... just maybe, it will make all the difference.

Humbly, your friend and colleague,

mrgray

If someone slips and argues or makes a negative, off topic comment I would, as an admin, transpose it as a vote in favor of the closing of these fun forums sections.

LOL.

Not for me, but to show your appreciation to the creators, maintenance workers, and each other.

These forums may be server side but a lot of work is done to keep it optimized and garbage free. (The term "Garabage" being Subjective.)

Let's give it another 23 hours.

I believe this one is different in nature. No explanations, opinions, or arguments are needed, warranted, or wanted. A simple "Thank you SETI" would suffice.

XD

Thank you, though. If there was another thread like this, please link me and I will happily close this one.

PS- Thanks SETI!

(Note: this is directed to the Admins, mods, and my peers. (You!))

Unite us.

It only takes one person with great empathy to start this process. But who will it be?

I'm not sure,

I found it randomly somehow, a couple of days ago and thought it kind hearted enough to post in the "Heroes" thread. I thought it might soften hardened hearts here towards the cause.

I hear tell that every post like this has been shot down and flamed out of existence. If true I think it only showed the immaturity and selfishness of the ingrates.

I have great faith there are others here who value these forums. Maybe even some of the flamers of posts gone by!

I have my own site for my team but wondered if there where some like me who would actually be able to show gratitude for all the work done here for us. Sure... we crunch. But how much effort does that really take after attaching to a project?

Thanks for breaking the ice, Ω.

Hmmmmmmmm..........

Forum.

Definition:

1. place to express yourself: a medium in which the public may debate an issue or express opinions, e.g. a magazine or newspaper

2. meeting for discussion: a meeting to discuss matters of general interest

3. Internet discussion group: an Internet discussion group for participants with common interests

4. law court: a law court or tribunal

5. public square in Roman cities: in ancient Rome, a public square or marketplace in a city where business was conducted and the law courts were situated

I see nothing in the definition of a forum that includes 'free for all' or 'anything goes', or 'do as you wish'. In fact, a couple of the definitions have the inclusion of 'law' in them. In other words, a civil place.
All it takes to preserve this 'forum' is for all those participating to act in a civil manner, pursuant to the 'laws' governing it. It is a place to civilly express opinions and discuss them, not attack others for expressing their opinions. If we could all observe these simple rules, or 'laws', the forum can continue without much trouble. Otherwise, we all know about the fall of Rome.

That would fall under "Opinion", and goes in the "other" threads I've been hearing about. Thank you, though.

Still, no thank you for SETI and peers.

I think a lot of threads like this have gone to the bad place. Don't worry about it.

Me I like the message boards. I have made a lot of friends here..and if it wasn't for the message boards I probably wouldn't have started crunching...but I doubt i would stop crunching if the boards went.

I love you people!!!

Ω, msattler, and Jim_S: could you please post your country. You've done, from what I have heard, what NO ONE ELSE in the other threads has EVER done, and you've done your country and this community proud!

Very proud of you! Wow I feel good now! I knew it!!!

This is HUGE.

I'd like to thank Jim_S for his ideas. This you three's thread now. I've seen all I needed to see.

Thank you for renewing my faith!

I knew it!

To be, or not to be? the SETI Forums

TO be . . . Based Upon the Logic - IF one were to Relate to the SETI Social Club, and then with the Present SETI Forums through the 'Thick & Thins' - in the End there has been a more Positive Approach (per se) to the SETI Community - that has grown and created an extremely large and, from my point of view - quite Intelligent Gatherin' of Individuals - Diverse in Subject and as well rule - that Positively Enforces the Factor - that this said Community should remain @ said Forums - due to it's Overall Positive Nature, and that the Berkeley ADMINistration has, since those Classic Days - done an Extremely Fine job at Maintaining a place - where the Community @ large - can and does - and Shall (in my estimation of the Facts) remain an intact and Intelligent Contribution to a necessary part of a Community - that being the SETIzens that have and shall continue to Contribute to an Extremely Worthwhile Cause, in the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence and Shall Benefit that Said Cause in Communication with Said Intelligence - when WE find that Said Intelligence . . .

Thanks Sincerely, Berkeley, for a Forum over All these Years - for the Opportunities and Chance Meetings with the People's of this Intelligence Community . . . It is Much More Appreciated than One Shall Ever Know . . .

. . . and the Search Moves On . . .
