I think this news is important, as the users stats seem to only update about once a month, and it will save me cellphone minutes! (to me, this news is on the same level as "we changed the background color in the GUI") My cellphone has no means to display the URL, and why would I anyway?

Ok folks, how about telling us something useful, like an ETA of when the validator will be back!

It seems from the the notice yesterday, that work was lost due to the outage last weekend, but there's the thread where people are dancing over themselves about the SNAP box being up for a few days (one line of the message), but ignore the "loop was caused due to a restore where returned results were lost" part of the message!

It seems these forums are getting down to only those who can see no problems, even when the Bus has a couple flat tires and an engine that needs repairs weekly......

Dude if you don't like how things are going why not just use SETI classic until this is stable. This thing is obviously still in development and bugs are normal. I'm sick of all the freaking whiners. If you're not happy go build your own project and do it better.

OFF TOPIC

Hi AZ Woody,
I have not heard from you in a while, and I am glad to see you back. Hope you are having as much fun as the rest of us, crunching all the WU's we can get.
Hope your health is well also.

Woody,
Even the best made Vehicles, appliances, and equipment in the world have problems at inception. We really should be happy that we are involved in helping Boinc become the "Distributing Foundation of The Future". You can look back when your old and gray and tell your Grandkids " I Helped"

I think Woody has a valid point here. Personally It seems to be running better and I am hopeful things will continue to improve.... but time would probably be better spent on other areas than cell phone data display at the moment. For instance Pending credit on the web working I would put ahead of that. I will continue to support the project but there are probably other priorities I personally would have focused on.

Yes He does have a valid point and I do agree, And I must say that AZ Woody has gotten direct answers back from Rom after the change in presentation of Posts. They were very direct, addressing a concern, but positive. Proof that more is achived through directness and tolerance, than through bashing.

There are a couple of different interpretations to this.

The news on the homepage doesn't say that they've had to restore the database: the only news I can find is August 18th or thereabouts.

One interpretation is that there are still files floating around from the recovery operation in August that don't match up with the database, and the validators see those, and get stuck trying to match them up with something and can't get to newer work.

... and if they can't get to newer work, then the work units are there, and we'll get credit when the validators are back.

Pascal, I did find a pic of you and with tin foil on my head, I've been able to send you pretty picture of how this all COULD work!

I can't see ANYONE saying that cellphone stats are more important than getting the background servers working and keeping all 20k of us still left informed! (the last part is important!)

And That is how I interpreted it. I did not see where it said "Files were lost"
We will wait and see, and if some are lost, then it's one more teething problem out of the way.

When there are different interpretations that could be had then maybe they can assign the individual working on cell phone data to the task of providing accurate news that doesn't need to be debated as to the interpretation there of....

But then why did the validator work just fine proir to the last SNAP crash? If it was an "old condition", seems that it would have been discovered earlier - it wasn't until the rebuild after the last crash that the validator got lost!

If the restore the DB and ULDL, and things don't match, well, they don't match! There's no way to grant credit for a wU where there's no DB entry, and no way to grant credit if there's a DB entry and no WU! Think of it this way.. an evnelope with an address and nothing inside, or an envelope with a letter but no address!

Woody,

Didn't mean to come off so angry, sorry.

The cell phone thing is probably someone's pet project. I don't know about you but many folks I know, me included, program little widgets while taking a break from working on a tough bug. People that can't prioritize their tasks wouldn't have made it to UC Berkeley so I don't believe for a moment that this was a time management issue.

We know that result files were lost on the 18th. It's a safe guess that any result files being uploaded at the moment that the SNAP quits could be lost (maybe a dozen out of how many thousand per day?).

The mess could be left over from the 18th, or it could be a few minutes of corruption from the problems last week.

But the problem with the news is really human nature: some people will take a statement that says "when result files are lost" and turn it into "we lost all the result files again!"

I think it's fairly clear, and we'll all find out for sure when the validator is tested and back up -- I suspect that the project will find out about the same time.

One of my mentors calls this kind of thing a "success exercise" -- when you need to do something good just to prove that everything isn't bad.

There was a not so subtle point, I think, that might have been lost in my observation...

I too have been know to code "widgets" to the app, but I also know that when I was presenting status to users/customers, it wouldn't be the top line on a status report for a project that's been fighting big problems/issues, unless it also addressed the big problems!

Just a few days ago, the "keep work for x to y days" got changed to "contact the server every X days", and it didn't make the news, yet that seems to have an impact to many!

There's only a few folks (

I don't know if you're in the US, but that's what Geiko uses in their ads...

"but I saved 15% on my car insurance"

In the case of an ad, it might work... In the case of a deminishing user base, it just says "we'll tell you what we want and not address issues!"

Its not unless they just got a wireless sponser.

"These stats are brought to you by T-Mobile. If it's not T-Mobile, it's not T-reffic!"

P.S. To T-Mobile: Use my slogan and you'll get sued. :P
