Just before the outage I did some minor tweaks to my old K6's hardware to try to reduce the wu run times from "forever" to "an eternity". Never really got a chance to test it out. But then, since that machine is no good for any of the other BOINC projects I know about (SAH seems to have the smallest wu's) I thought it might be a good time to upgrade from Win98 to Debian. That was surprisingly easy and Debian even has the BOINC packages, boy is the installer better than it used to be. The benchmarks came in about half what I was getting under W98. Then again, half of negligible is still, you know, who cares. Anyway, there's a wu on it that's trying to download. One of these days. Meantime, Einstein gets the spare cycles from my other machines. Duplicate message board pages have always opened on all my machines regardless of versions. This only happens on SETI. But it is useful. The first page opens at the start of the thread, then wait a bit, and the second page opens at the point one read to last time one read the thread. A lot of the behavior of the forums (including whether or not links open in a new window) can be controlled on the Your Account page. Link here |

Just before the outage I did some minor tweaks to my old K6's hardware to try to reduce the wu run times from "forever" to "an eternity". Never really got a chance to test it out. Zivis has smallest WU (less than 1.5 Mb each WU), but the software's engine is bigger (23.95 Mb or so). Zivis, also, has a beta test, with files of 256 Mb. More info Zivis homepage. Long live the FrankenServer! Yup I just uploaded about 8 completed WU that had been stuck for a couple of days. At least half of the problem is solved maybe... but still no new work:( When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again. |

Ok, thanks for your explainations Thinking to the past, I've seen some times that uploading was working and download not. Some times opposite. But it was for technical problems (some server down). Now I see that in this moment we have sah_validate1 bruno Disabled sah_validate2 bruno Disabled sah_validate3 bruno Disabled sah_validate4 bruno Disabled sah_validate5 bruno Disabled sah_validate6 bruno Disabled fix_missing_results kosh Disabled sah_assimilator1 bruno Disabled sah_assimilator2 bruno Disabled sah_assimilator3 bruno Disabled sah_assimilator4 bruno Disabled and I have seen that download seems to be faster. As I understand, disabling validate and assimilators, they give more power to ... upload/download server bruno Running ... so may be the staff in Berk is doing something like my suggestion. The download queue will rapidly finish and than we will have the upload time. The opposite of my suggestion but the concept is the same. Separate the jobs in order to manage them better. Bye, Franz |

I've got 2 completed WU's that have been sitting there "forever". No new WU's either... something's definately askew! -- Christopher 'CajunCoiler' Mayeux Owner, MSB Data Systems Panama City, FL |

Ooooh, big jump in cricket graph,, just maybe "It's ALIIIIVE" From Eric's biannual post #6: You can tuna fish, but you can't tune a TCP in the Staff Blog forum: Addendumb: I had a 'd'Oh!' moment this morning. Apparently we were running with the upload timeout set at 20 minutes (which I think is the apache default), so our connections were being dominated by machines that couldn't get through, but were hanging onto the connection. A month ago I started up again after a 5 year absence and am having a problem with downloading work. It was doing fine before the server went down but now, even after my computer being on for 12 hours, there are no new projects. This is what is says: Requesting 17280 seconds of new work Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509] Deferring communications for 11 sec Reason: requested by project Deffering communication for 28 min 22 sec Reason: no work from project Can anybody help? |

Hi all. I'm not a net Guru and I cannot figure out what a hell is coming on. This is what I noticed my side: There's a size mismatch in every each uploaded result that's actually preventing successful uploading (in my case mostly around 0.72 KB). Ciao. IZ3ATV |

This is what is says: Ha so you are the straw that broke the camels back!(LOL just kidding) Everyone is having that problem... so just wait a bit longer. They seem to be making some progress in resolving the problems. When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again. |

Hi all. I noticed that, it is a symptom, not the cause. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. And unlike most advice, it's backed up by proofs." -- Algorithms to live by: The computer science of human decisions. |

It was doing fine before the server went down but now, even after my computer being on for 12 hours, there are no new projects. This is what is says: In a word, no. I'm pretty sure that the project has deliberately turned off the supply of new work, to let the queues of work already allocated and crunched download and upload respectively. Following Eric's "Addendumb" moment (wonderful what a good night's sleep can do!) those queues are now draining much more quickly: depending how things go, the staff may, or may not, start issuing new WUs before they finish work today. |

Yikes! Well, I'll donate the $25 bucks everyone has been talking about. That may at least buy some water for the camel while we wait. |
