It's another holiday weekend at Berkeley. Plus a regular outage day. It may be time to panic.

Here's what's going on behind the scenes at the seti@home Berkeley labs.

Failing Uploads - again - since around 07:40 UTC

Is it the server or cogent?

Anyway, to protect completed work, I'm suspending networking - again.

There's no uplaods happening, but downloads are- so i'd go with the server problem again.

I'm glad that someone else noticed the upload issue, at least I know it's not my box. I, too have been able to download, but have suspended network activity as of this post just to be safe......

Great move moderator Arm, for closing the thread with the perfect title: “Seti Upload Problems”, and redirecting people to the thread with an obscure title: “Panic Mode on (3)”. I guess that made sense to you somehow????

Yes, it does make sense to me.
First - The thread named "Panic Mode on" exists since the first upload problems in Berkely arised (a couple a months ago)
Second - In the closed thread there is a link to a thread where the people can get more information about the issue.
Third - I also closed another thread with the crystal clear name "what do you mean these message?"
Greetings.

I've already lost 10 WUs with a "Validate Error". Most of my computers are running 24/7 and are located at the place where I work. Unfortunately I can't remote control them from home, so I'm afraid I will loose more WUs. Berkeley should work out a solution to this in time, because it's a waste of time and money, when such issues occur more and more in the last days and weeks.

OK... after doing a tracert, it's the next port upstream from S@h, so we're waiting for the Uni System Admins to come to work?

As Mike says, Cogent supply the high-speed internet connection which all SETI upload/download traffic uses on its way to or from Berkeley, from or to anywhere else in the world. You can see what's going on here.

But I would be surprised if cogent were allowing downloads to go ahead normally, but somehow mangling or blocking traffic in the other direction. As has been said elsewhere, I think it's more likely to be a server problem - late on a Friday night - in the SETI lab on Berkeley campus. If the Gods of SETI are smiling on us, one of them will drop by the lab on Saturday morning (read: 4 hours from now, or thereabouts) and reboot the offender. Otherwise, backup projects are going to get a weekend bonus....

For new readers referred here by the Mods: these 'Panic' threads are usually just light-hearted banter, and not to be taken too seriously. I suspect that Eric's comment may just have been a throw-away quip, born out of frustration. But I look forward to being proved wrong by Monday's technical news update.
