http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/acronym

One entry found for acronym.
Main Entry: ac·ro·nym
Pronunciation: 'a-kr&-"nim
Function: noun
Etymology: acr- + -onym
: a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters : INITIALISM
- ac·ro·nym·ic /"a-kr&-'ni-mik/ adjective
- ac·ro·nym·i·cal·ly /-mi-k(&-)lE/ adverb

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/onomatopoeia

Main Entry: on·o·mato·poe·ia
Pronunciation: "ä-n&-"mä-t&-'pE-&, -"ma-
Function: noun
Etymology: Late Latin, from Greek onomatopoiia, from onomat-, onoma name + poiein to make -- more at POET
1 : the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss)
2 : the use of words whose sound suggests the sense
- on·o·mato·poe·ic /-'pE-ik/ or on·o·mato·po·et·ic /-pO-'e-tik/ adjective
- on·o·mato·poe·i·cal·ly /-'pE-&-k(&-)lE/ or on·o·mato·po·et·i·cal·ly /-pO-'e-ti-k(&-)lE/ adverb

Other well-known acronyms include: radar; scuba; laser. In no way do these words or LOL, LMAO or ROFTLMAO meet definition one or two of onomatopoeia.

BS is saying that LAF is an onomatopeia.

The American consensus is that people should be able to spell. LAUGH. Otherwise, please use the abbreviations the concensus has agreed upon, such as: LOL; LMAO; ROTFLMAO.

We now return you to the worldwide point of view on the battle, as BS is escorted to the side for a spehling lessun. ;)

It's an onomatopoeia, not an acronym. Look it up.

I have a button on my browser bar to spell check the window I have keyed . It's free, and works well - I've been using it for some weeks now.

Download it here; http://www.iespell.com/

BrainSmashr I have left you private post in Cafe@Home (nothing to do with any forum, nothing too exciting, just a private matter, thanks)

LAF sounds just like LAUGH, neither of which sounds like a laugh. Laughs sound along the lines of HA HA HA.

Instead, LAF has an economy of letters over LAUGH by a whopping 2 letters. Furthermore, F is easier than GH. Double-plus-good for effort. Now let's all have a gud laf. :-)

Well from the consensus in your other thread..it appears that the lady's actions didn't actually fall below those standards.

LAF

You keep telling yourself that the consensus of a world-wide Seti forum is an accurate reflection of what's considered good taste in America, and we'll keep escorting those who fall below those standards out of the public eye.

BrainSmashR, in regard of the topic of this thread, do you think you have got some answers to your question, further guidelines or other tips in posting?

The other topic about breast feeding is covered in the other thread.

You made your point in the beginning, where this thread was wrongfully deleted, which was corrected later, and yes, I think it was deleted because you are the author, but I also think people have stated here that you are allowed to post here just as everybody else, and suggestions to how to behave in a mutual respectful way have been given.

Is it time to conclude on this thread? Or are there aspects you think have not been covered?

First I was told if I wanted to continue a closed discussion to start my own topic. After doing so, the topic was deleted.

Why make suggestions you have no intention of respecting?

To maximize discussion and flow of information, our message boards are moderated. Message board postings are subject to the following posting rules:

Posts must be 'kid friendly': they may not contain content that is obscene, hate-related, sexually explicit or suggestive.
No commercial advertisements.
No links to web sites involving sexual content, gambling, or intolerance of others.
No messages intended to annoy or antagonize other people, or to hijack a thread.
No messages that are deliberately hostile or insulting.
No abusive comments involving race, religion, nationality, gender, class or sexuality.
Moderators may delete posts that violate any of these rules. The authors of deleted posts will be notified via email. Gross offenders may have their ability to post messages temporarily revoked (though to prevent abuse only project administrators have the ability to do so). Additional kinds of bad behavior ("bugging" posts to trap the IP addresses of other participants, excessive thread creation to spam the forums, etc.), while not listed in the formal rules, may still lead to similar penalties.

If you think a post violates any of the posting rules, click the red X on the post and fill out the form; moderators will be notified of your complaint. Please use this button only for clear violations - not personal disputes.

We try to be as fair as we can when moderating, but in a large community of users, with many different viewpoints, there will always be some people that will not be happy with our moderation decisions. While we regret that this happens, please realize that we cannot suit all of the people all of the time and have to make decisions based on our resources and what is best for the forum overall. Please don't discuss our moderation policy on the forums. We aren't a social engineering project nor are we in the business of creating a perfectly fair system. So such discussions tend to be counterproductive and potentially incendiary. If you have a legitimate claim, send email to the address below.

This moderation policy is set by the SETI@home project. If you have comments about the policy, email setimods@setiathome.berkeley.edu.

I don't know. Seems to me that this whole thread is off the topic after the rules were re-posted about 130 posts ago.

Go ahead. Some of the most interesting discussions are off topic offshoots!
But get the permission of the thread owner and fill out the proper forms.

If certain people insist on carrying on with this thread, when it is fairly clear that most of us have already heard more than enough, then I would suggest that they will risk permanently damaging their reputation on these boards.

PS to Fuzzy

I seem to keep agreeing with you, I'm getting worried...

Sorry! ;-D

19. Jump Shot

A jump shot is made when the cue-ball passes over any part of an object ball, whether touching it in the process or not, except:
(a) when the cue-ball first strikes one object ball and then jumps over another ball,
(b) when the cue-ball jumps and strikes an object ball, but does not land on the far side of that ball,
(c) when, after striking an object ball lawfully, the cue-ball jumps over that ball after hitting a cushion or another ball. © 2006 World Snooker. All rights reserved
