What is indecent about this, much less obscene, whether in public or private?

Indecent and obscene are not synonymous. They cannot be interchanged without changing the entire meaning of the sentence. What's "indecent" about exposing a breast on an airplane is specifically that it's a body part which is normally covered in that particular situation. It would not be indecent in a bathroom, in your home, or on a nude beach because one would expect to see exposed body parts in those locations which would otherwise be covered in a different setting.

I'm not sure he realizes that plans cannot be dropped because of a hungry baby. Run off to do something as a social outcast to do something that is completely natural.

She didn't have to do anything of the sort. I doubt all baby formula's are on the banned liquids list, AND she was offered a blanket which would have solved the problem before it ever started.

Sorry guys, I'm totally not religious, but I DO believe humans are better than all the other animals on the planet combined. In my opinion this isn't any different than monkeys flinging poo at each other or dog's sniffing each other's butts. Humans are better than that.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Oh dear Brainsmasher. Please do not put public breastfeeding on a par with monkeys flinging poo at each other or dogs sniffing each other's butts.

This is your opinion. However there are laws that specificaly say that breastfeeding is NOT indecent.

http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/breast50.htm

Nineteen states exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws

Not a single state prohibits a mother from brestfeading in a public place.

She didn't have to do anything of the sort. I doubt all baby formula's are on the banned liquids list, AND she was offered a blanket which would have solved the problem before it ever started.

As CA has already stated..in the state that this occurred (Vermont), she is not required to cover herself.

Sorry guys, I'm totally not religious, but I DO believe humans are better than all the other animals on the planet combined. In my opinion this isn't any different than monkeys flinging poo at each other or dog's sniffing each other's butts. Humans are better than that.

I agree to the fact that our intellectual capacity does carry a higher moral standard than other animals; however the comparison of Breastfeeding to the actions you describe are not even comparable. Feeding an offspring is essential for the sustenance of life. "flinging poo" or "sniffing butts" although disgusting, is merely social interaction.

Happy Thankgiving to all as well :)

"flinging poo" is what we sometimes do here. I think it has something to do with our social interaction.

But we don't sniff butts here. :-P

All mammals breastfeed, but only humans have developed female breasts to be sexually attractive to the male sex. There's the difference between us as a specie and other species. Our closest relatives, the anthropoids, don't have enlarged breasts among the female members, and they breastfeed just as well as female humans.

I think this is where the confusion sets in. A bodypart, which has two functions, to be used for feeding the offspring and to be sexually attractive to the male sex. We don't hear any claims about covering bare shoulders, even a female bare shoulder can be very sexually attractive, do we?

Just shows how monkeys are more intelligent than humans. Ever hear of anyone being crapped to death? But I digress...

And so have other religions, but I think my point got through. Or what?

Or do we really have to dress us in burkas to be able to walk around without anybody complaining about any of our bodyparts showing? (Ok, I'm polemical right now)
