Message 321924 - Posted: 1 Jun 2006, 1:43:27 UTC - in response to Message 321486.

Have any of you heard of a show called MindFreak? It's on A&E tonight. The guy ( Chris Angel ) is an illusionist that does things that no human should be able to do. Last season he did things like walking down the front of a building and climbing through a plate glass window.

If anyone likes magic and illusion I would highly suggest watching it. It's on at 10 PM EDT.

My question is this. Does anyone think that the tricks he does are anything other than camera tricks and set ups? Keep in mind that he does a lot of this stuff in the open. Street magic. For example, the plate glass window was in a storefront and the person working there was INSIDE the room that Angel was coming out of.

I'd like to explain how some of those tricks are done but that would be talking science..........

Sorry for the 'talking down'...stating fact does tend to do that. I think you people in here should read "The Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan (who was a key figure in SETI.)
You'll probably change your minds about a lot of stuff after you do that.

I whole heartedly agree...

The only difference between jeffrey and I in regards to homosexual males is that I don't insult them for being born the way they are; I don't use their lifestyle as an insult against someone else; nor do I look on them as less than human. Aside from that, my disdain is reserved for people who can make a choice about how they live their lives - either for knowledge and the betterment of all humans, or for ignorance, superstition, and supression.

And btw, jeffrey, YOUR paradise clearly has homosexuality in it:
"And there shall wait on them young boys of their own, as fair as virgin pearls" (Koran 52:24). “They shall be attended by boys graced with eternal youth, who will seem like scattered pearls to the beholders" (Koran 76:19)

(yet another example of inconsistency and hypocrisy in religion).

LOL....I've read a couple of well researched books about Afghanistan and its Jihadist wars. The stories of homosexual rape and beastiality among the most militant of groups were incredible. Soviet soldiers captured by the enemy were so routinely raped repeatedly by the militants who had attended the religious 'Madras' schools in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan some never recovered. The CIA bargained for a few to be handed over and shipped them back to America. One was so far gone he was later arrested for molesting little boys. Note, I'm not talking about your run of the mill tribesman necessarily either but the most fundamentalist attendees of their islamic schools which still exist today.

Perhaps. My thoughts is that he WOULD still be here. He seems to be the type that neds to have someone he can feel superior to.

Wrong again. Ever tire of that?

I am not refuting the philosophy, nor even DISPUTING it. What I am saying to all of you is this, not everyone CARES about philosophy. Any of you may find that to be a completely irrational way of looking at it, but in all honesty, I could not possibly care less about philosophy. It bored me in High School...it bores me now. I could also not care less about someone's opinion about why my particular philosophy is wrong. Nothing personal to you, or to Rush, or to Chuck for that matter. All I am trying to make clear is that there are a lot more people out there like me who just don't care about it. Yes, I know, I SHOULD care more about it, but I simply DON'T.

This is precisely the issue in most discussions. Philosophy forces people to actually examine their worldview. When they do, they find that most of the little pleasantries they hold dear dissapate. So, instead of addressing how they know what they know, they simply don't think about it in order to maintain their most cherised beliefs. Their "wants" are more important than what "is."
Cordially,
Rush

Well...at least now I know why you are such an unpleasant person Rush.

Try stepping away from Philosophy for a bit and try growing a sense of humor.

By the way, just because you say I am wrong, it doesn't MAKE me wrong.

Wrong again. No real surprise there.

I'm not an unpleasant person. I just don't put smiley faces into every post or hand out virtual coffee. The "unpleasantness" is something you have created in your head. You aren't alone, others do it as well.

I have a sense of humor. Can't you see my noodly avatar?

Hear, hear! And there are times when paranoia is a simple survival tool!

Part of an article from New Scientist, January 28, 2006 titled "Glad to Be Gullible" by Clare Wilson.

--------------------------
"The talents of people who believe in the paranormal don't end there. It seems that they are also better than non-believers at perceiving meaningful patterns in apparently random noise. The classic example of this trait, which is known as pareidolia, is when people claim to see images of the Virgin Mary, say, on the wall of a building or tortilla. Pareidolia can be auditory as well as visual, as shown by the current craze for detecting electronic voice phenomena (EVP), supposed messages from the dead buried in the random noise of audio recordings.

"Psychologists have traditionally viewed this quality as a shortcoming on the part of sheep. But Peter Brugger, a neuroscientist at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, does not think it is a black-and-white-issue. He explains that people commit what statisticians call a type 1 error when they perceive a pattern where none exists - when they are overly gullible, in other words. A type 2 error is when they fail to recognize a pattern that does exist - when they are too skeptical. Brugger points out that pattern recognition is an important aspect of human cognition, allowing us to recognize familiar faces or camouflaged predators. "From an evolutionary perspective, the price for protection against type 2 errors is a susceptibility to type 1 errors", Brugger says. He theorizes that it may be safest to err on the side of gullibility. "If you miss the tiger hidden in the grass, then you are dead. If you always see tigers, you are always running away but you're not dead.""
