I would love to donate but my meds and treatments take all my money and more. Last month the docs told me my remission is over and I'm back fighting the big C again. Gonna have to shut down my crunchers pretty soon too I think. Though my best buddy says he'll subsidize me in those and some other bills for a while. I'll continue to contribute to the effort by helping folks as best I can when they have questions.

Jim

And you do help a lot, and you've got a star! ;-D

Worry more about your fight than about the future of S@H. If you can't donate, then everyone should understand. I lost 3 of my grandparents to cancer (all 4 to smoking - the last died of emphysema instead of cancer).

Good luck, and I hope you beat it this time.

Scientists are renowned for their very dry wry humour...

(Often, the jokes are miles over the heads of the mere peanuts counters which probably doesn't help...)

I would expect a strong correlation between "little green stars" and "little green men."

Message 266006 - Posted: 21 Mar 2006, 3:04:31 UTC - in response to Message 265140.

I am sorry, but this struck a part of me that most will never know. First I have to send My Best Wishes to the "Friend" that typed this for Jim! Few, I hope will never have to understand why!

This is based on the time that I was the "only" relative that was close enough to my Uncle that was dying of Cancer... I drove miles daily to provide support that the rest of the family sent by telephone or mail... It was very tough on my Uncle (obviously) and me to be the middle man (for the Family).

The positive thing that I can point to is BOINC is now searching for "cures" and other things... Boinc and the first Folding@home, Protein@home etc. are the foundation of people using their home computers to help others... When all this started for companies/organizations stated computer time was far more expensive than what grants could afford... What we saw was a person could donate computer time to help move "science" ahead! I do have to say Yes there are companies that can abuse this...

BOINC has started a new process where people can start to help "cure" what ails us of move other areas of "science" into things that do not cost Millions... or Billions... At this point, to watch Seti,BOINC die would be very sad...

WE are here to Help, We believe that things should move Forward! We believe that even a small group can do things larger than the Corporations that are only in it for the profit. We believe that People are Important! and things we do should benefit the People.

God bless you Jim
You truly are one of the good guys, Byron.
(written by a friend at Jim's request - he's here next to me but a little "dopey") He's very concerned about "hijacking" this thread - I told him to shut up if folks want to say nice things - he grumbles as I type this - he's a proud man.

I believe that Seti Boinc deserves consideration for Donations...

If you are looking for more information on what is needed, a couple of good places to read are:

The Plans
The Budget
Matt L's post

And watch how well they are doing from Donation History

PS: Good luck Jim. Its not an easy road but you can make it. I stood by my girlfriend's side as she went through it. 2 years with no signs of it now after 5 years of on and off treatment and reoccuring problems. I sincerely wish you the best.

Yes, I got Sir Arthur C. Clarke's email and wondered about one little thing that everyone here ignored: How come a writer of his esteem is asking us to put money into this? How come he doesn't put the $750,000, or at least a big part of it into this project? He's a Sir! He's a big money writer, or at least he was. He invented the commercial satellite in his books.

So how come he didn't put at least x00,000 dollars into this project? How come "we" need to??

Until mr. Clarke sent his x00,000 amount of dollars, why would you need to spend any money on this "project"? Searching for extraterrestial life isn't even a science. So why spend money on it?

Mind, I have read the budget page. It's for Seti only. I give HIGH marks for BOINC, but Seti?

How do you know for a fact that he has not contributed? He could be one of many anonymous contributers.

How do you know that he did not donate? Maybe he made an anonymous donation as well as a public request for you to donate for something that he too feels is worth while. He may have donated $250,000 so now seti only has to get $750,000 instead of $1,000,000. Most normal people don't go around bragging about how much they donated to this or that.

Because he has a certain amount of name recognition.

Is it any different than when Alex Trabeck hocks life insurance to Senior Citizens?

People see Arthur C. Clarke, and they read it. If they believe in SETI, they'll donate to SETI. If not, well, at least they read the message.

... and hopefully, he did donate.

I sure would like to see more of us "crunchers" donate. Is it possible to reach .5% of us or even 1.0% of the "crunchers"? Sure would like to see it happen.
Sure is possible to reach that .5%, we've done it this month! Whoooo!!!!
