Message 260436 - Posted: 11 Mar 2006, 3:42:34 UTC - in response to Message 260428.

I used to use KMail too, until I found Thunderbird in ports.... (-:<
I went the opposite way. When I switched to SuSE I started out using Thunderbird.
I switched to KMail for the spam filters (Bogofilter and Spam Assassin).
Thunderbird does a superb job at filtering spam. Since I set it up I think I've seen one spam slip by the filter and get to the inbox. I use TB on both my FreeBSD and XP boxes.... (-:<
about a different aspect of thunderbird, i'd really like to change from outlook express to something better, but the problem has always been that a lot of my email accounts are @ hotmail, and i don't know of any way to get thunderbird (or any other mail client) to be able to retrieve them
anyone have any ideas?

Can you set up some auto-forwarding triggers? Probably not. I love hotmail, it collects all my junk.

Hi Lee,
If hotmail doesn't have a pop3 or imap server you're just out of luck. I ran into the same thing at Yahoo. Of course I didn't really try there since I used that one mostly for "junk mail" so I didn't really care whether I got it on my own comp or not! I don't know how you would go about finding out unless you were to ask their customer support if they have that available and the server to use.

they don't use POP or IMAP, everything is done by their own proprietry protocol over HTTP, so it's accessable remotely, but just via a different method.

i suppose with enough time i could work out how the protocol works via ethereal, and make an extension for thunderbird, but that would take me ages (never done any programming, and don't know any app programming languages, let alone actually write something lol)
I was just hoping that there was an easier way already

looks like i'll need some new accounts, can anyone recommend a good email provider which allow IMAP access?

Well, I didn't get into the part about writing your own. I was just meaning the standard ways of accessing it. I first thought my email provider just had a web interface until I started playing with it. Used the same server name that showed up in the web url but used pop3 instead of the http and it worked. They might have imap too but the pop3 worked first time so I didn' bother to change it.
BTW, I tried to download and install the firefox search plugin, but I run Konqueror. There must be something wrong with my java installation cause I can't get it to install. I get an error in the script. This thing can use Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox scripts but just can't get this one to install. I think I'll see if there's an upgrade for my jre and see if that helps.

well it's just that hotmail is a little vast lol, what address would you point the client at?
also the address OE gives by default for hotmail is
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
and for msn
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
go figure lol

Waaaay back when, when Pacific Bell was the phone company here, they were my ISP. After a while, they switched from hosting e-mail to letting Yahooy do it for them. I didn't like and still don't like Yahooy. I was still using Netscape Navigator at the time and I figured out how to get it's e-mail client to "download" my e-mail from Yahooy. That was over 6 years ago, and so many things have changed since then. I don't remember how I did it, but it should be do-able from Hotmail, I would think, just as long as they have pop3 or imap server as you mentioned.

G-Mail [Google] has POP and a setting to forward to another e-mail account. I have 99 invites left. If I had your e-mail address I could send you one and you could get started there. Just a thought. Let me see if I can find a link to G-mail....

Well, maybe this will help: http://gmail.google.com (-:<

[edit]
Dang, had to log out of my G-Mail to test the link. Ok, click the "About Gmail" link on the lower right. Then click the "Switching to Gmail" link on the left. That should work for you.... (-:<

Lee, Thanks for the offer but I was reading some other posts where somebody recommended a bbcode plugin and a couple others so I think I will switch to ff for my standard browsing. Have to get an upgrade. The version I have is 1.0.6 and I've noticed they've upgraded quite a bit since I installed this one. I just liked Konqueror because it combined a full function file manager with the web browsing but if it's going to be this hard just to install *one* plugin... oh well. I'll still use it for a file manager and some browsing. Now if I could just get them to share bookmarks!

admitedly i haven't used anything except IE and Firefox, but i'd highly recommend firefox, just for how customisable it is
and yes, there have been a lot of improvements since 1.0.6, we're now on 1.5.0.1
and you can't beat the fox for security, not to mention the endless extensions for it
i'm not sure firefox has the same file manager capabilities (but then why would you want a web browser as a file manager, surely you'd want a dedicated file manager lol) but you can browse files and directories with firefox, it just looks like an FTP session

i'd imagine there's a file manger extension about somewhere, and if not, you could always write your own ;)

Hey Lee,
Just wondering if you've seen this:
E-mail notifier toolbar for Firefox
Don't know if it might be what you are looking for or not, but it is supposed to work with gmail, yahoo, and hotmail plus pop3.
BTW, you got me hooked. Tried to install the boinc-wiki plugin on my firefox and it wouldn't install. Upgraded to 1.5 and it works perfect! I'm sold on the fox now!

looks good, i'll give it a try
but what i really wanted was to be able to access my hotmail accounts from thunderbird like i can from outlook express, maybe i'll get round to writing an extension for thnderbird as well as firefox lol

glad to hear it ;)
I can give you a list of recommended extensions if you wish, just to get you started quicker rather than having to fumble around in the dark as i had to lol

Hi Lee,
I saw your post to Jim, mentioning Thunderbird and getting it to do what you want, with regards to Hotmail. I just went into mine and saw that as long as your "other" e-mail accounts are pop3, you just need to add an account to TB using the server info for them. But, you said that Hotmail does not use pop3, right? If you can verify that they do use pop3, then just add an account to TB. Hope this helps a little.... (-:<
