Perhaps we should meet after work someday. We can share a pitcher of beer (I'll buy) and we could clear up some misconceptions.

- Matt - SETI@home

Damn I just been in CA and now I'm thousands of miles away again. Missed gettin in on a beer opportunity there!

I wanna complain that this argument should have started 4 weeks earlier so I could have had a beer at UCB when I was over in USA

Matt

This is most readily used from the Bulletin Board Systems "Public" circa 1984-1994

What is a sysop anyway?

System Operator

I meant "what do sysops do?" And yes, I meant that rhetorically.

- Matt

From http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/sysop.html

Sysop
Pronounced siss-op, short for system operator, an individual who manages a bulletin board system (BBS) , online service , or special interest group (SIG).

* It Should include IRC operators.

So from BBS's, and internet service providers they have the grown to System Administrators (some NIX, some MS, fewer Novell or others). They operate the complexities of the "system"

From the Mainframe days it was a person that insured punchcards were loaded and properly stored, tapes were loaded, discpacks were changed, paper for printers, un jam various queues etc. They "operated the system."

My only suggestion is that there is more than one way to skin a proverbial cat.

Cafe Press offers a lot of things, including the ability to do the whole commerce transaction.

If the numbers work best for using your friend, then I'm all for that.

Should be fairly quick, i.e. less than an hour, unless there's some kind of problem (you enter in a different e-mail address, etc., - anything that requires human intervention to fix).

- Matt

Doh! Having a bunch of email addresses can cause problems. I did, in fact give a different address. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to be patient.

Matt, Do I need to do something to get my star properly credited me or will it work itself out...? Both addresses have the same beginning, just different domain names.

Question is, do green stars only last for a period of time? Or are they a life-lasting attribute?

I don't know if this has been questioned earlier...

Just to let lots of you know (As an interesting fact):

We have now reached only 1/2 of the total donated in March '04.

Donate to SETI and get that up even further. (Yes, I know that I have no green star!)

We can make that figure a reality. 14/09/2005 05:40 UTC was the magic update. Just keep the donations rolling in!

Ned, Fuzzy et al

Sorry for the delay, I have been woking to get the wife to Dr. appointments and other things since her surgery...

I spoke with my friend about the Tshirts. Black Cotton tshirts he would waive the setup fee...

3 Color Setup which should do a fairly good job on the graphic
cost for 100 tshirts $649.00 = 6.49 each
cost for 200 tshirts $599.00 = 2.99 each

each weighs roughly 1 pound for shipping purposes.

Shipping - Priority Mail

Priority Mail is used for documents, gifts, and merchandise. Any mailable item may be sent as Priority Mail. The maximum weight is 70 pounds. The maximum size is 108 inches or less in combined length and distance around the thickest part. Mark each package "Priority Mail" in the postage area or use a USPS-provided Priority Mail envelope or box.

Features

Priority Mail offers 1-3 day service to most domestic destinations. Priority Mail envelopes, labels, and boxes are available at no additional charge at most post offices or by calling 1-800-222-1811. Pickup service is available for $12.50 per stop, regardless of the number of pieces.

Priority Mail Rates Weight not over (pounds)
Local Zones
1, 2, and 3 Zone 4 Zone 5 Zone 6 Zone 7 Zone 8
1 $3.85 $3.85 $3.85 $3.85 $3.85 $3.85
2 $3.95 $4.55 $4.90 $5.05 $5.40 $5.75
3 $4.75 $6.05 $6.85 $7.15 $7.85 $8.55

To Germany
Global Priority Mail (GPM) (230)

Flat-Rate Envelope

Small $5.00
Large $9.00

To Austrailia
Global Priority Mail (GPM) (230)

Flat-Rate Envelope

Small $5.00
Large $9.00

I also looked at Cafe Press and what they want is about 13.99 each white tshirt. The Site was not geared for larger orders.

As Matt and UCB may have access to reduced rate UPS rates... and can code the shipping calculator...

For those that hate me... LOL
or more questions.

Definitely do Priority Mail, and you can probably get a T-Shirt into the normal flat-rate envelope.

It sounds like you've got the pricing worked out too.

davidmcw maybe has hit on a good old idea. I would be willing to pay $40 to $50 for a good quality T-shirt with some sort of SETI material printed on it. Especially if the profit went directly to Boinc/Seti!

Anyone Else??

Bump Geek@Play

I know you brought it up so is it time to bring it up again...

Ned

One reason I brought it up, is if "I handle the setup charge" then the screens can be preserved, so a smaller "follow on" could be done without the new Full setup charge (obviously we want pictures of people in the shirts)... I can request that he give me a copy of the CYK color separations to forward to UCB... So call it an additional donation on my part...

So with a Larger Minimum order other things can happen such as reduced per unit cost and/or stash a few extra for the Seti Store... After the cost per unit is determined UCB has a chance to see what profit they want per unit...
UCB does setup for the Form for the order process and UCB recieves the money, they have the count of small, medium, large, XL etc... A purchase order is generated and I "Do Not" have to handle any money... If it is advertised and it is not in Stock (in the store) and orders are processed monthly... Then smaller follow on orders can be accomplished...

So the presumption is that the whole thing can be "affordable" by all parties and UCB makes a bit of change... If the price is right they they could also have a few for the Seti@home Store... and other things like Mugs or Ball Caps...

Monday I will contact a friend of mine that has been doing Silk Screening for somewhere around 20 years... It used to be that 3 color setup was around a $100 and with a minimum+ order the costs vary...

Cafe Press is worth investigating: they do smaller quantities than you get through traditional means.

If the minimum is 200 through a traditional shop, and we get 200, then another 100 want 'em, it becomes hard to make more.

The key is preserving the CYK files... The actual screens are produced from the CYK separations... The CYK is sent to a machine that is almost like producing a photographs, it is then developed and when done they add a chemcial that disolves the membrane and the screen is recyled... The large part of the initial cost is generating those CYK files and developing them... I have been through this a few times...

So the modest goal is to get a High Quality T-shirt to the User for less than $20 US... IF UCB realizes only $5-10 per shirt then a 200 Min order would result in a $1,000-$2,000 that for their use... So without good numbers it is either "This is Great or a bust"...

So along with the communications issue, if a quarterly news letter was sent to all ~400,000+ active users and it was offered to to purchase a Set@home T-shirt and 25% responded... What are the possibilities..

Me I am only offering this inital footwork.

Al
